- This video breaks down how to fill in thin and bare areas in your St. Augustine lawn. St. Augustine grass does not grow by seed and will have a difficult time filling in on its own. I have over 10 years experience in the field with a degree in horticulture. I am owner and operator of Turf Organics in Jacksonville, Florida.
This extremely detailed video will explain what tools you will need and exactly how much soil and sand to use. Florida lawns and St. Augustine grass is very difficult to maintain. This video is the perfect guide to get your lawn to where it needs to be.]

did you apply fertilizer to it at anytime when you laid down that mixture?
@@ArtGardenFoodExpressions Nope. . No fertilizer added. It just took a few months. I did water it a couple times a week though.

Thanks for this info. I have horrible grass and a large tree that covers a large portion of the lawn. Now i know the optimal sand manure ratio. Thanks!
No problem!! Thank you so much for supporting the channel.
Make sure that the tree is trimmed properly and brings in as much light as possible. If their is not enough sun light then this will not work either. Doing this is a great place to start. If you are still having trouble under the tree keep trimming it till enough light gets in to allow the grass to fill back in.
Thanks good video keep them coming

This is the simplest way to fill in the bare areas, which I have ever seen in TH-cam. Most of the lawn guides require lots of expensive equipment but this is what we need. Thanks!

I'm gonna try this out here in CA. I have many patches since the watering has been limited. Hopefully this retains the water a bit longer for it to grow back. Thanks for the advice.
Great idea. Grass should recover well with more mild temperatures there. Goodluck.
I can say this with first hand knowledge before Chad had Turf Organics and was with another company he oversaw our lawn/turf maintenance and our yard has never looked better!!! Not sure how TH-cam knows I have dead patches of grass in my lawn but I’m glad I ended up here. I love how passionate you are while spitting hundreds of lawncare FACTS. Lol my husband’s going to be weak. All he does is mow 🙄 Cool video! Hope this shit still applies since I live in Ohio.
Haha thank you!!😁
It can still absolutely work. You may be able to even use seed the type of grass you have after the soil.
Thanks for the comment and support 👍
THANKS MAN, I'LL GIVE IT A TRY. I'M IN S. FLORIDA AND WAS GOING TO CUT PLUGS FROM ST.AUG. SLABS,BUT THIS SEEMS MORE TO BUILD A GOOD BASE SOIL AS IT'S BEEN POOR FOR A WHILE.DOLLAR WEEDS TOOK BIG SECTIONS AFTER THE KILL OF CHINCH,ETC.BUGS WERE DEALT A BLOW 8 MO. AGO.
I think this is a much better then plugs and like you said it is building a better base.
You will see it fill in much faster and in return have less weeds. Goodluck!!
I used Chad’s method and it works great! He’s right about laying it on thick. The soil settles in after a day or 2.
That's the key!! I'm glad you did it right and found success!!
Great video. Thanks for letting us know about the sand mixture. Definitely learned something new.
Thank you. Glad you could find this video helpful!!
Do they sell these products at home depo?
@@joemilici7024 yes they do!!!
Great video. I have already done about 14 bags of both BK and sand. Bought a house recently and previous owners didn't care for lawn much. It's been a week since the first 9 bags. Grass starting to peak out. May need more coverage due to dirt settling. Thank you for the tips. I subscribed. Looking forward to seeing the results video soon!
It may need an aeration as well!!! A week.is a very short time. I could give it a month before adding more soil.
This will help a lot and be needed several times depending on how bad the lawn is!!!
Thanks for the comment and support 👍
@@bettercallchaddhow soon after filling bare areas with soil can you do aeration?
thanks Mang!

This is the video I needed. Bare spots are my biggest problem. There aren't that many lawn care TH-camrs that have St. Augustine (only the Lawn Care Nut that I know of and he has never talked about bare spots).
We are so glad you found us. St.augustine is the minority in the grass world but one of the most difficult to deal with.
Thank you so much for subscribing and the comment. We have many more vidoes on St augustine grass planned.
I live in St Augustine and have St Augustine grass lol. I did this last year with BK and play sand and it worked pretty well. However, my yard didn't make it through the winter and the falling of my oak tree's leaves. Hoping the levling sand makes the difference. Great video

Great video with easy to follow instructions. You realty know you stuff! Is the Black Kow Cow manure n the video 1.0 cubic ft?

Just wanted to thank you for this video. I had some dead spots in my front yard because of trees we had removed. Nothing would grow back for months. I had the same issue due to a tree i had removed in my front yard. Now the grass is very thin. Would love to see the before and after pics.
Same. I just started this technique, had it on for about 3 days now wondering the before and after results
did you apply fertilizer to it at anytime when you laid down that mixture?
@Art, Garden, Food Expressions if your talking to me then yes
@@adamcalebchloe8760 thank you
Really enjoyed this video. VERY INFORMATIVE! When it comes to fertilizing, what is your opinion of liquid fertilizer vs granular? Thanks. Definitely subscribing!
Both are fine. As a homeowner I recommend granular. Easier to apply and spread evenly.
Great video, and I will definitely try this technique out on the bare spots in my Houston lawn! Some of the spots are about the same size as your video, while others are much larger - basically dead spots from too much tree shade. I’ve taken care of the shade problem, but wondering if I need to resod the larger bare spots (one is about 25 sf), or just put the soil mix down and let the runners do their thing.
Thanks for the comment Gordon!!
I would recommend sod or plugs in those bigger areas!! You can put down some soil put some sod on top then use more soil to fill around the edges and in-between the sod pieces to help those big areas fill in faster!!!
Hope this helps!!🤙
What do you recommend for newer sod? How long does it take to level out. Or do I need to help.
In houston also with the exact same problem. I'll be resodding in the next couple of weeks.
Great video! What size bag of leveling sand and Black Kow do you use, Chad?
Nice video. I would love to see how it came out though.
I have some other videos on my channel with results.
This works really well for our st augustine grass here in Austin. It is super easy to apply. Just purchased the black cow and leveling sand from the local home depot. Mixed well in the wheel barrow before application. After 3 weeks , I noticed some of the bare spots have been filled. The rest with little shoot and I guess it will be filled soon.
Awesome!!! Gald to hear it worked. I know yall had a cold winter. Hope that St.augustine recovers well!!! This will help a lot. Keep me updated.
Thanks for the comment and support 👍
This is where I am too! Looking to fill in some very bare spots in the hill country!
How did it end up?
@@Retroyoda I'd say this is a perfect solution. My lawn looks amazing for those previously bear spots.
@@dr_920 thanks for the update, just moved in into a new home and after months of trying to contact the contractor to fix the lawn I decided to do it myself. They left everything uneven and bear spots. Keep the grass green but seeing all those bear spots and being uneven really got to me.
This was so helpful! Can I use the same mixture if I need to lay fresh sod in Tampa climate? I am trying to avoid having to regrade the entire lawn.
Thanks for the comment!!
You absolutely can!!!
This would be great mixture to have under fresh sod.
This video is the complete deal on how to fill in dead spots in St. Augustine. Sounds simple BUT it's the important details on the prep and application that makes the difference. Everybody says to just dump some BK on these spots. Then your yard doesn't react and you have to do it over or your just disappointed in the results after all the work and money spent. I've got some areas where I lost turf to pulling out crabgrass, and sod webworms eating my grass. Followed this plan and as he said Mother nature made it work. Thanks Chad.
Thank you so much!!! Glad we could help.
you said you dumped some BK on these spots. what is BK?
