With my “aggressive runners” that float over top of all the others I cut them off and transplant them to areas where I am combating an evasive weed, bare spots, or rough soil conditions. They seem to take root better, knock out the weeds faster and build patches that are thicker and denser than where they cane from in the first place. It has worked really well for me so far. They seem to already be used to the soil conditions so they make it a home easily, they are already in the “rapid recovery mode” so they send out more shoots and roots. I plant them in straight line rows a couple inches apart. With survey flags mapping the area so I don’t mow that section for a couple weeks for better rooting. Then I will mow that section only every two days or three depending on weather. It has worked wonderfully for me.

You are way more advanced than we are we call them runners. I collected over one hundred of them and gave them to my neighbor. He chucked them in the yard dumped a bag of potting soil over them had his boy to water them every evening. Everyone of them things took . Three years later after doing this dozens of times his entire yard is as good as mine.

You are 100 percent correct. My father was a master at mowing the lawn. He had the best lawn in the neighborhood. When i bought my house it was covered in weeds. His advice was throw some squate if san Agustin sod and mow then water...mow mow mow mow like you never mowed before. My lawn cleard up and san Agustin spread through out the yard. He also bagged like crazy.

YES the rain in Houston, Texas was NO JOKE my St Augustine grass got dollar spot/grey leaf spot from being so wet, but I treated it and it has grown out now. I pick up my clippings because I planted my rye grass so thick its still dying off at the moment! I LOVE MY GRASS! My Dad's house in San Jose had St. Augustine lawn. When I moved to Sacramento he gave me a bag of stolens that I planted at that house and they grew up beautifully(I hope the new owners appreciate it) in the front yard.... the larger back yard was much more of a challenge, but it was growing! Now I'm in a new house and need to get my hands on some stolens to see if I can get it to grow here in a MUCH smaller area. Lots of area, just a smaller lawn section.

I am in Socal. First time homeowner. Trying to get my front yard healthy again, and I just tore up my backyard to start from scratch. Dirt at my house is super compacted. I couldn't even get an Augur down into it in order to plant St. A Patches. I had to rent a tiller and get this dirt turned over. Added some soil conditioner and tried lying out some patches. All the patches are have some form of shade are doing great. The other ones are struggling because it's just too hot out here. I just picked up some Stress blend, and the freedom bundle with the liquid stuff you got in there. I also added the Ironite, and then some of the Turf builder a few weeks later. It's helping but I still have insanely yellow patches in my front yard. I need help! ha

This season is the first season that I’ve seen my st Augustine lawn throw up Seed Heads. And I’ve noticed after a year of learning this tips, changed my fertilizer to organic and trying the Next Soil activation pack. In fact I’ve noticed that parts of my back yard was mostly weeds sand and crabgrass, so much that my surviving St Augustine was starting retake some ground and thriving after using the Soil Activation pack. Even though my backyard has a long way to go my entire lawn hasn’t looked as good as it did years ago.

The only 2 grasses i dearly love is ? St. Augustine and Centipede Grass, and i mix them 👍 There both Freeze, dough, disease, resistant and don't need fertilizer either. IT don't get over 10" tall > I mow only once a month, while every one else is mowing 2 times a week. Trying to look as nice as my yard. I'am saving on gas, wear at tear, saving on water, wearing my self out. They both do good in shade or full sun either one ! There is a slight different! Centipede grows shorter and a little lighter green, while St. Augustine is a darker green, and grows a little bit taller. > BEST GRASSES EVER 👍

Different grass types are always fascinating to me with respect to where in the country they thrive. I'm in the transition zone and tall fescue is highly desirable here. I recently saw a video on how to get rid of tall fescue and I thought "why would anyone want to get rid of fescue?"
I'm looking at the videos that highlight St Augustine grass and can't help but notice that it resembles a grassy weed to me. I realize that certain grass types are more favorable to certain areas with specific climates and soil conditions but It's almost hard to believe that anyone would actually want a lawn full of Saint Augustine grass.

    • @jakel.1724

That’s a fair thought. I like it because how thick the blades are. And very easy to understand what it’s feeling. Blades curling? Water more. Blades not very green? Root or food problem. And good luck weeds getting sun in it.
Also feels really nice bare foot. Like great waxy stout feeling

This video came at exactly the right time. Just yesterday I was noticing seed heads all over the place during my Wednesday mow. I thought it might be frayed tips or some kind of fungus, but no it definitely was seed heads. Our seed heads are pretty ugly, lol. After weeks of rain here in SE Texas, it has been dry for a couple of days so I'm assuming the lawn was rain drunk. Thanks for sharing the new fungicide option. We need as many options as possible with our thick, green blades so susceptible to fungus. Also, I would love to see a video on the difference between fertilizing and watering shaded St. Aug vs full sun St. Aug like yours. I have read Texas A&M's recommendations to fertilize at half the rate of a full sun St. Aug lawn. Watering also is cut in half. This is so important for us in Texas as our front yards are typically shaded with two oak trees and we might be throwing down wrong.

It works on brown patch in the winter months but not really on grey spot. I'm sure it works for some people but when the grass is wet for days on end it's hard for me to control it.

Great tips this week. Thanks! I needed this. I've been pondering over a few spots in the lawn that look a lot like leaf spot. Not sure if I want to hop on a different product yet just because it's a new lawn to me and I want to work with the tried and true first. But this will help me later if my problems keep showing up. Not a bad diy price either for us smaller lawns

@thelawncarenut could you do a video on Teejet nozzles? Like a compete training video on each tip and what they can be used for and why?

They cut down two Camphor Trees in my yard late Feb. The roots were making baseball size mounds on my yard. My St Aug has been dormant since the felling and stump grinding. Not to mention the foot traffic in those two days plus some divots from the tree falling. What can I do to wake it up and get it growing? My lawn looks green with a few weeds here and there mainly Pusley. From the reading I’ve done, Camphor oils can kill off lots of plants. Hoping these little sucker from the camphor tree seeds aren’t choking my St Augustine out. There’s a bunch of seedlings growing where they cut down the trees and some.

Reminds me of one of those videos where they spend two hours cleaning a $50 rug.

Unrelated question. Anyone is welcome to reply. I live in Virginia and this is my second season trying to grow a Bermuda lawn. As a newbie last year I was treating my lawn for, what I thought was, crabgrass. However, this year I believe I have identified it as being Bahia grass. My question is, do they sell anything besides Metsulfuron Methyl that would remove the Bahia. I know MSM is very strong and I'm concerned that I could harm the Bermuda.

Ok....so please answer this question. It's kinda like what came first...the chicken or the egg. So where did St. Augustine grass come from?

You can have loopers even when you don't use preemergent. Of course, you can have clubbed roots if you use too much preemergent. I have bunches of loopers. I just mow as normal. Survival of the fittest.

My understanding is the reason lawn St. Augustine seeds aren’t viable is because they are commercially reproduced hybrids. But wild non hybridized St. Augustine grass does produce viable seeds.

Great video and definitely cleared up my worries about seed heads. Mine seem to have lasted for much longer than 12 days. Even with consistent watering, fert, bio stems and cutting 2 times a week.
On a serious note, can we put seed heads in our salads? Gotta get them nutrients

You can take the runners and plant them into the shade and it will start off , How? is take a shovel and step on it into the ground, take a runner poke down into the shovel slice and step on it to pack it. its best to plant the runners in a shade to get them to take off ~ That how i cover 22 acers by planting the runners ~ Sure it took me 5 years to get full coverage. But look how much i save from buying seeds. If you take a look at a runner 7:05 ~ each section has roots sticking out ~ So its easy to transplant and its faster than seeds and > Less watering ! ~ So every time i trim my side walks > i save the runners into a 5 gallon bucket, and transplant them under a tree or shade. To make them easier to start off

How long will it take for my St Augustine grass to catch. I put patches down like a checkered board in May. Also how long should I wait to put down the 2 n 1 fertilizer?

Thank you for the video.....It's very helpful. I have St. Augustine in my yard in Birmingham, Al. I've had a terrible time with grey leaf spot and brown spot. I've been working with the local county agent and plant pathologist over the last year or so and they have helped with treatment but I'm still having a prevention problem. It's June 5th and we've had a rainy season and the heat is really starting to crank up so I think I'm primed now to start experiencing the height of the problems. Their main recommendation is centered around the Scott's products like Disease X. I don't know if that's because they feel that is the most commercially available or easier or what? I don't want to saturate my soil with so many chemicals. I would like to add some natural nitrogen through maybe top dressing with a good compost but I don't know what to do naturally about the fungus?
    What are your thoughts?

Hello I've been spraying and praying but I can't find anything to get rid of moles in my lawn. Do you have any suggestions?
