I realized it when I saw Fate, the hint drops are numerous, Archer's constant need to get under Shirou's skin, insult yet instruct, all the way until he literally spells Shirou's power. Anyhow, I guessed Archer was Emiya Shirou right from the start, I read in the VN how a catalyst is used, and the moment Rin saved SHirou's life with the medallion, I realised the Medallion could have been the Catalyst to summon Archer (I didn't know by then that its standard that the Servant comes from the past)
