    Great video, my whole family is from Polk and now Bradley counties. I live in Nashville but, went to school in Cleveland and spent so much time with my kinfolk in Polk county. My grandfather Jim Easymoney Bettis was part of the Civil Defense and actually helped build the water flew that wrapped around the mountains above the Ocoee. And Caney creek , the stories that I had heard growing up from my folks. Thanks again, Cousin Bruce Hayes

    Mountain residents in the surrounding areas and communities such as Sylco Settlement, the Old Dutch Settlement and former Vineland settlement obtained their U.S. mail through the postal service hub in the Caney Creek Village Hotel. Hiking out and back in of those remote communities for the weekly mail pickup trips to Caney Creek could easily be all-day affair. A unique micro-cosem, the town was written about in "Ripley's Believe-it-Not."

    In live in Cleveland and Kayak in the Ocoee throughout the summers. Have you come across any other ruins in your ventures? Maybe just a small stone wall or anything of that nature?

    I've been told that farther up the creek thee is a low head dam that the town got their water from. From the topo map, it looks like the creek makes a 180 degree turn and I suspect the dam would be just up from there. I have seen remnants of the pipe and valves down near the creek. Have you ever been up to that dam. Also, heard that there is a wilderness campground just off a forest service road on the creek. Haven't had the chance to explore up there yet.

    You can walk In ? caney creek trail

    • @Southern_Adventures
      @Southern_Adventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richard Taylor no. There is a road that goes back to it but the TVA owns that property. Guess you have to get permission to walk back that way. I could only get to it by kayaking in.

    Got a question for you... a friend and I are trying to plan to go see this place. She said she heard you have to ask TVA for permission to go visit. Is this so? If so do you know who you'd contact? I''m guessing the folks at the Ocoee Flume for TVA? Thanks in advance for any assistance. Please always know if you see something among any of my videos I'm happy to return the favor and assist you any way I can.

      The area is not owned by the TVA anymore. The only way to get to the area by foot is by going through TVA property. Then I guess you would need to gain permission. If you go by kayak then you don’t cross TVA property. Many people that kayak the Ocoee river camp over in that area. Never heard of anyone getting in trouble.

      Thank you very much. That is a huge help. All I need is to get busted for trespassing by the TVA! haha!

      Actually, you can indeed hike to this area without crossing the river or ever being on TVA property by hiking the Caney Creek Trail. You can access it from Falls Branch Road, also known as Forest Service Road 374 (FSR 374). This road is open seasonally from 3/16 - 5/31, then it closes and reopens 9/01 - 12/31. Once you take this road back to the old FSR 33271 turnoff (now gated year round) you can take the Caney Creek Trail (unmarked) down to Caney Creek. It's a couple miles or so each way. This may help: www.fs.fed.us/ivm/index.html?minx=-9415691&miny=4172876&maxx=-9406518&maxy=4177539&exploremenu=no
