Today I'm very happy to welcome "The Wandering Warrior" Vincent Tseng on my channel, for a very interesting sparring exercise I believe every traditional Wushu school should add to their training.
With or without protection gear, should you be a beginner or an advanced student in your style, these drills offer the possibility to tryout any Kung Fu / Wushu technique you want in a more "realistic" way than the usual "technique application".
In this video Vincent and I explain how to do it step by step.

Nice breakdown. I take a different approach, but the end result is the same. I begin with fixed partner drills, gradually upping the intensity, and becoming more freeflow until it’s just sparring

Oh yes this a great way to do it as well, actually might help to focus on that technique one wants to use even more I guess, thanks for sharing!

Great crossover! Indeed, the flow/touch sparring is great for the learning and training process of applying new techniques, it was actually how I learned to do the question mark kick lol I also recognize the gongbu coming out in sparring from both your guys' selected techniques; I think this actually gives credibility to the idea that techniques and applications from various traditional Wushu styles can and have been applied in Sanda and Shuai Jiao, they just overlap, and specific stylized techniques are defined to help formulate learning and training, but at the end of the day are conceptions that can be adapted to the context of the specific situation/exchange. Conditional sparring where focus and parameters are restricted to training and developing skills and techniques is one of the most reliable ways to improve said skills and techniques. When sparring, it is important to spar with a goal of applying specific techniques or ideas. Previously, I wrote that you should NOT specifically be looking/planning for techniques to apply, as that is a good way to set yourself up for being countered, and that these techniques came out of natural reaction, based on prior Wushu Taolu knowledge, context of the specific situation/exchange, and most importantly, comfortability and control in sparring. HOWEVER, while this is the ultimate goal for fighting in Chinese martial arts and may automatically work for some who can pick things up quickly, this is no way for general practitioners to learn consistently; instead, controlled yet progressive drills, such as flow sparring, as is done in professional Muay Thai and MMA gyms, can help to effectively drill and condition specific skill to come out successfully without the risk of injury or freezing/panicking. Sparring is NOT fighting, but rather training to allow one and one’s partner to train whatever they want to come out. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Through experimentation I've come to train in a similar fashion. Training to "place" shots really helps develop that dynamic precision and adding wrestling takes it to that additional level. Such a great training method!

Some newcomers may not understand, but your approach looks a lot like how the old guy practicioners spar with each other in parks in Mainland China!

Would you consider exploring other peculiar martial arts weapons? Such as the Water Parting Shield or the Gold Coin Spade.

Of cours if I can find a master that masters any peculiar weapon! I know about the gold coin spade, but I'm not sure about what the Water Parting Shield is? I've googled it but couldn't find anything 😁

@@wushuquestofficial i have a lot of trouble finding info about it but i was able to scavenge something
I cannot find the video anymore,it seems it was cancelled, but the weapon is similar to Dragon Guillotine. Imagine a straight pole, about 1 meter long ,with a semicircular metal blade fixated on it at the extremities, like a less complex Dragon Guillottine. Like a giant Deer Horn Knife with a straight handle

@@junichiroyamashita oh I think I've seen it somewhere, but can't remember if it was in a store or in a video or at a master I've visited. Though I'm sure if I've had visited a master whom had this weapon, I would have asked questions about it haha

I know this is an old vid now, but as a further step, I like to add a complementary second choice technique. So, in this one, if you have a throw that looks like “wai” from shuaijiao like here, we’ll also add a throw like “kao” as an option, so it’s more of a game. You aren’t both trying for the same throw, you don’t necessarily know which throw your partner is trying, you can change from one to the other and use each to counter the other.

    • @mulli032

And, it’s still technical and limited to really working those two main things.

How do you use the shoulder taps? What do they simulate?

    • @wushuquestofficial
      @wushuquestofficial  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi! Shoulder taps are a great tool for distance management and reaction time and speed. They are great for beginners as well as they're not dangerous.
It works great as a warm up but also as a foundation training
