Small price to pay if the union is done for the right reasons. Farang must understand the cultural significance of all the costs, not only SinSod but ongoing responsibilities to family into the future.

When people of different cultures marry, both cultural traditions should be respected. In Western countries, for example, the bride's family has to organize the wedding ceremony and party. This means that the Thai family in law will have to fly in and host the Western family members. It would be a lot cheaper for the Thai bride's side to let go of their traditions. Besides the cost, Sin Sod feels extremely awkward to foreigners. My advise is that when you start dating a Thai girl, you need to casually talk about the Sin Sod and when she insists (under family pressure), you either run for the hills or bring your own traditions to the negotiation table.

How often can the brid's parents get Sin Sod? If you marry a widow or divorced women do you still need to pay?

Regarding Sin Sod - foreigners - take a deep breath and relax. It is a tradition, as Nan described, not a legal requirement. Western culture has all sorts of wedding traditions (arguably archaic). Where I am from, the US, the tradition is that the bride's family pays for the wedding which could be a very expensive affair. As for the inevitable criticism that Sin Sod amounts to paying for the bride (chattel slavery - Oh My!) my country, the US, has the tradition of the bride's father giving the bride in marriage to the groom as if the bride is the family property and the decision is up to the father. Really, get over it. Sin Sod is a tradition and it and all the other events and agreements associated with the marriage are as negotiable in Thailand as they are in your home country.
