    I've been experiencing this very same thing with my 1998 5.4 2WD for a long while now. Exactly these symptoms. No check engine codes. Heavy shuddering under a load, going up hills in high gears etc. However, this video (along with a few other tips I got from fellow older style Expy owners) convinced me it's the Torque Converter..."The stalling for no reason at stops, or putting it in gear...but mostly every time I put it in reverse. Honestly, it is this video that made it clear. You explained my symptoms "EXACTLY!" It took me several (many) attempts to have different tranny repair shops diagnose it correctly. I stayed silent as they test drive it. Finally, an honest old school specialist took me on a very demanding test drive with a diagnosis device hooked up the whole time. The symptoms were very evident ...with no check engine lights or codes. He said even tho it acts like the symptoms of a misfire or coil pack or Injector going bad...."I've been doing this for along time...and I think your tranny is okay....It's your torgue converter." Everyone wanted to charge me for a complete rebuild and torque converter replacement. $3,500.00 +.
    It is going in to have the torque converter replaced tomorrow along with a complete transmission service at his place. $900 out the door. So thank you for this video.

    This was a very informative video. I appreciate the fact that you were so descriptive. I am having the same issues. With a Lincoln Mark VIII. I have changed out a few cylinoids and it shifts better, but still had the problem of staling.
    Again thanks for all of your videos on this project.

    Ford trans specialist here,,,just had to add that a converter itself Wil rarely be what's causing it to stay on,,,on the 4r70w trans it's usually a stuck tcc bypass valve and sleeve inside the valve body,,,also the valve has to be removed from the vb bore to see if the plunger is stuck inside the sleeve,,,a new valve can be purchased from sonnax,,,as Ford doesn't sell it separate from a whole vb..

    • @ttmfrc
      @ttmfrc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Experiencing same trouble in 2000 F150 5.4L 4x4 - 4R70W - 163,000 - stalls when shifted into R nearly 100% of the time, when shifted into D perhaps 50% of the time with terrible surging eventually stalling. No problems starting, idling, in P or N. No noises/lights/codes. Truck was driving/shifting fine before problem started, except seemed I had to depress accelerator *sometimes* way to much to get it to downshift going uphill/loads. All I've done so far is a fluid/filter change (nothing but nice red fluid and fine sludge on the magnet came out) - no improvement. Removed and "tested" the TCC solenoid w/12V, seems to work. Crash courses on the TC and how it works, and the VB and what it does - all leave my head spinning. Is the TCC-bypass-valve-and-sleeve a route to explore? I'm guessing removal of the VB will be required?

      @@ttmfrc you need to determine if the stall is caused by the trans or an engine issue,
      first;;;;
      jack up the rear end and put it into reverse with foot off the brake;;
      does it stall or continue to run???
      now put your foot on the brake,does it stall like a clutch was let out to quickly???
      if the stall is caused by the transmision convertor clutch staying on,,it is usually a stuck plunger inside the bypass valve,,
      you have to remove vaLVE BODY from the vehicle,,then take the plate off,,then remove the tcc bypass valve and sleeve from the bore its in to verify if the little valve is stuck inside the sleeve.
      that is usually what it is,let me know how it goes

      @@justingeraldi2304 jacked up the rear end. tried in R and D - continues to run with foot off the brake. When I apply the brake, it bogs down and stalls - yes, like perhaps the clutch were let out too fast.

    2000 F250 4x4 with 5.4L 146k. Dies in reverse, doesn't feel like its pulling, does it hot or cold. Tries to die out about 50% of the time, sometimes I can catch it and give it a little gas and it won't die until the next time I put it in reverse. Maybe torque converter? I wish it was something simpler, I've had surgeries that limit my right arms mobility and strength. I wouldn't be able to tackle a job like this anymore.

      @@FixingWithPassion Just wanted to update you. The issue turned out to be low transmission fluid. It was about 1 1/2 quarts low. I topped it off and drove it around with no issues , shifting was better, and after testing reverse about 10 or so times it never died. What a relief, although I should have checked it sooner. I bought it during the summer for a plow truck, I've hardly driven it, and have had other projects so haven't spent much time with it.

    Was yours stalling out when it was in gear or decelerating to a stop? seems rare for a converter to lockup and stall the engine but I think mine is on a chevy

      In gear and at a stop. Felt like someone did not push in the clutch and the engine would stall out.

    • @GhettoWagon
      @GhettoWagon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya that is pretty much what mine is doing. Checked everything. Seems like a rare failure for a converter but they do fail that way. It also will lug the engine down in gear sometimes unless I blip the throttle while on the brake like 2 footing it. Then it unsticks. Before This I had a shudder and lockup worked when it wanted to

      @@FixingWithPassion this just started about a month ago. 1st heard a slight Winny sound. I always check all my fluids. Straight in the middle. Fluid was changing 4 months prior. I don't put a lot of miles on it. So I dropped the pan. It was never dropped before me. Cleaned out 22 years of very fine debris from the magnet. Replaced filters and fluid. Sounds went away. Drove it maybe 200 miles in three weeks. Dropped the pan, very little debre. Changed fluid again. Everything sounded good, no slippage until 2: days ago. Felt vibration at start up, and at beginning acceleration. Then smoothed out. Yesterday slight hesitation at first acceleration and 2-3 second between shifting into 2nd gear. Haven't drove it sense. But two years ago when I bought it from a coworker. He had maintenance paper work on transmission, sensors, brakes, reaxle fluid drained and replaced. Basically I felt well maintained. Until you mentioned it stalled on you after driving and came to a stop. This only happened once two weeks after I bought it. Nothing after. I did radiator fluid change,oil and transmission fluid change 3-5 months after I bought it, because I was going on a 1,000 mile trip. Drove great. Until just recently. Mine is a 2000 expedition 4.6l 2wd. I love the truck, but can't see paying for a rebuilt at 1700+2100$.
