  • Trying to work out how to stop cats jumping your fence or gate? Well....designing a cat proof fence seems difficult expensive and often is an eye sore. I wanted to do something different from what I've seen so designed my own cheap and easy 'PVC pipe' no roller system that you can DIY to keep those felines in the yard. @@saaa9964 no i haven't yet. We're debating over the piping or the perpendicular fencing. We have a large backyard with coyotes on the other side so there's a lot of debate here in our household as to the best way to do this. And the project kind of got sidelined by some family crisises. I'm glad you asked though, its put the fire back underneath my butt again. I will definitely update when I do. I believe we had decided on the 3½ or 4in diameter, though. The thinking behind being the wider, the harder to hook paws around.

    Worked for me! The cats didn’t even attempt escape :) they loved sun bathing in the afternoons and I loved them helping me in the garden!
    I rent, so have added fence extenders on the lower side fences. On these parts I added core flute panelling underneath the piping which was secured on the inside of the fence, not the top. No issues, although it was kinda ugly. Recommend! Great DIY solution!

    This remarkable system works--at least on my two cats. They are Himalayan with short legs like Persians, but he managed to reach the top of the block wall before I had the PVC pipes installed. Presto, my cat was immediately deterred when he jumped and reached the top where the PVC roller was installed. I shall now complete the job, installing the PVC pipes to the rest of the block wall. By the way, the pipes work just fine on cement--block walls.

    While it is a lot simpler than the roller kind I'd hate to find our cat could figure out how to reach over it or somehow get enough grip with its pads to shimmy over. I assume you found that the hard round plastic surface was just too slippery for the cat, and protruding out vs just on top creates an extra overhand obstacle. Did you ever get a video of your cat trying and failing to escape?

    Very clever and elegant solution. Thank you! Most fences in the US are 6 ft high which is 1.8 meters.
    I have a neighbor's black cat using my fenced back yard as a litter box and hunting ground for my wild birds at the feeder. I've picked up over 10 lbs of litter from him so far or more. He hunts my pretty wild birds daily, knocking over the large tray feeder and wasting a ton of seed, and killing the birds. I'm so fed up with this cat. He won't quit. So I need to block him from entering and eventually trap him and rehome him. He is obviously getting crappy food and care from his owner because he travels quite far daily for fresh meat. I hope your solution works. I don't want to prevent the squirrels running on fence to feed as well, only the cat and this might work very well.
    Some advice for your cats from my years of cat and dog rescues:
    Feed cats raw ground beef and sardines. They need this, which is why they hunt. Other cooked meats like pork and chicken are also good. Fresh ground carrots, cabbage or kale, chopped up lettuce in their meat. Cooked eggs, Greek Yoghurt. Vitamins and Fish Oil such as Iceland Pure Sardine and Anchovy Oil (not Salmon oil which no cat, dog, human can digest but bears can). This fresh food diet will lower hunting needs. Lowered hunting means less reason to leave your compound. Also give them once a year, Egg Yolk Lecithin 600 mg 2 x day with food for one month every year. Lecithin is natural. It dissolves fat in the body, and thereby shrinks the fat around the hairballs in every cat's gut. In 2-3 weeks, they will excrete massive hairballs that have been sitting around for years making their digestion poor. My 19 yr old cat threw up 3 massive cigar hairballs after only 2 weeks of Lecithin. Only use Egg Yolk Lecithin, not Soy or Sunflower. Dogs and humans can have all 3 kinds. Also give your cat Thomas Labs Bio Case Plus which is an Enzyme/Probiotic formula that will aid digestion and clear material in bowels effectively. Once the hairballs are shrunk down, a bit of Magnesium powder or laxative will clear them out. Only give any laxative after one month of Lecithin use. The Enzymes are useful for rescued animals, seniors cats, young kittens, etc. Use daily or occasionally as needed. This will give you magnificent cats with zero health issues. If you spay and neuter, roaming will cease.

    I did this to my fence. The cat figured out how to jump between the roll bars and use the brackets to lift itself over the top. Getting the gaps between the bars very small was more than I could manage. If the bar/tube is too long it doesn't spin. Too short and the gaps provide an escape route. He also figured out to climb underneath the bar because the slack was hard to prevent. Since then I have replaced it all with wire mesh along the top that bends with the cat's weight so the cat ends up hanging almost upside down if it hangs on. Works well.

We live in the country with all sorts of wildlife on the other side of the fence so it's super important that he not ever go over.

    It is soooo nice to see a responsible cat owner. In Oklahoma, cat owners are not required to make any attempt to keep their cat off of the neighbors property (where they kill birds and tree frogs and scar up the fence wood so the rain can further degrade it). It is up to the person that does not want the cats on their property to cat proof.
    I have tried everything short of putting razor wire on top of the fences which is probably illegal on a 4 foot front yard fence anyway. I'm just tired of spending my own money for something that should be their responsibility.
    I do wonder how the pvc being stationary stops the cats from going over. I have seen the kind that has wire or something running through the center so that it rolls whenever the cat tries to get a grip.

      Ngl it’s not just irresponsible, but dangerous for the cats themselves. Especially in places with predators. I know I’m sure as hell not risking it with my babies. Plus there’s also diseases from other cats or even fights.

    Your very clever ! And I love your cats & yard >3 ... Council rules here that cats be kept in the yard but its hard....so hard :( I was going with another product when I buy a house next year , but nope not anymore. Looks very easy to put up, plus kind on the wallet too! I was reading that you've had no escapes? I guess the thing is cats cant grip the pipe to get up? Is that how it works?

    what size pipe is that,,i just put up 3 rail fence around my 5 acres ..i added 5 ft tall field fence which cats cnat fit through however a couple of them can jump to top rail and escape,,i have bought a pet friendly soalr powered elec fence box to put wire at bottom so adding your idea to top would prob keep at least my oldest outside cats inside fence area away from pit bulls and assholes who speed up and down our private rd,,great idea

    I love this idea and I'm going to try it! It's so much more cost effective than alternatives. My question is this: I have a six foot wooden fence with the railing on my side. Do you think I could install the pipe on the railing instead of on the top of the fence?

    • @enmodo
      @enmodo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure if you ever tried it but if you look at the video you'll see he didn't put it right on top, it is on the side of the top so it sticks out and away from the fence. That creates an overhang the cat is forced to try and reach over. I think the important thing is the height limit he mentions - if they PVC is too low the cat could jump up and over it and then use it as a nice rail to stand on for the remainder of its escape! But being hard and slippy it is still a better barrier than wood or netting overhang.

    Thanks for your video, you mightve saved our poor kitty's life. Out vet bill has been around 2000$ this year alone due to a bully cat. The problem is im renting at a very strict place. I have 3 questions then:1- what do you recommend to put it against the wall without damaging the property(i cant put it ontop because it will be to visable and ill be fined and have to take it off). The wall is 2.2 meter high (in foot thats probably 6.6) so i thought of puting it around the 2 meter mark then it wont be visable from outide my yard. 2- if i paint the pvc to the same colour as the walls, do you think the paint will give the cat enough grip on the pvc?
    I look forward to your response, and much appreciation from South Africa

    I followed your method precisely. My fence seems to be the same height as yours and the tubing the same kind. It didn't work. I wonder if it's because my cats are less than a year old and may be more spry than your cats. I wondered if the tubing was just not slippery enough so I added lubricant. The cats find all of this more challenging, but definitely not insurmountable.

    I would love to do this, but if there are any structures inside the yard next to the fence, for example a potting bench, then this wouldn't be possible, would it? I do the TNR and I have lots of cats in my backyard that I have had spayed and neutered and my neighbor is starting to trap them and have them euthanized and I'm very upset about this! It would be great if I could keep them all in my backyard but I really don't know if this would work. They also jump up on the roof and get out that way. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

    you are a gem, thank you so much. Does the pipe come in different colours. If not I will soften the white pipes with gold stripe bamboo. Cats cant climb up bamboo. This beats stuffing the cats in wire cages. What a horrible invention that is for the cat.

    • @jcs6206
      @jcs6206 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My cats don't seem to mind being stuffed in their wire cage... granted their cage is 20 feet by 12 feet by 6 feet high, but it is still technically a wire cage because of the roof (which I'm considering trying to replace with something like this idea).
