In the 1968 Olympics, Bob Beamon broke the previous long jump World Record by 6.587%. In other words, he destroyed it by 10x as much as World Records were normally broken by.

Definitely a freaky record. Among the top 100 indoor shot puts of all times, the average distance is 21.9804 meters with a standard deviation of 0.30987 meters. This record of 23.38 is 1.3996 meters above that average. That's 4.517 standard deviations above the average among the best of the best. This is comparable to Usain Bolt's 100m record which is 4.59 standard deviations below the average among the top 100 times ever run.

Second, this is an excellent display of the hangover effect. A term coined from Dan John about WRs in throwing where the athlete was throwing up in the bushes before setting a new WR.

Please don't overlook Joe Kovacs, who hit 24m+ in training, as evidenced by his TH-cam video a while back. Therefore, it's more a question of who will go past that 24m barrier first. I would hope to see both men swapping the world record, all of this year!
Several years ago our own Jacko Gill was on a superb trajectory towards 22m, then injury and a heart condition took him away from the circle. I had surmised that he would have been the first to break the WR 23.12m of Randy Barnes, but unfortunately that never happened, and is no longer a pipe-dream.
I've been around our Sport for more than 60 years, and am looking forward to see all of the big guys in Budapest - I have a very good seat in their new Athletics Centre, and will have on all of my Kiwi clothing, plus other paraphernalia, flags, etc. So, bring it on, and let's see the Battle of the Titans come Saturday 19th August!🕵‍♂

    • @tripwirealarm

The thing is that throw in training was done with no intention of staying in the circle. You can drop bombs relative to your own PR like that. I feel that as good as Kovacs is he’s inconsistent and needs to have everything execute perfectly to be within Crouser’s throwing distance.

Just read a report in Track and Field News, published almost two weeks ago, that this record will not be ratified as either the World Record or Indoor World Record.
From the article: "The surveyor’s report identified two deficiencies, stating, 'The diameter of the circle does not comply with the rules' and 'The downward inclination in the putting direction does not comply with the rules.' ”
Crouser himself only heard about this on April 1st, and he thought it might be an April Fool's joke, but it turned out to be true. The throwing ring was hand-cut and Crouser believes that imperfections may have been outside the allowable. From the article, citing the WA report: "ring diameter was surveyed at 2.1cm to 4.8cm (1-5/64ths to 2-7/32nds inches) larger 'at every measuring point' than the max allowable 2.14m (7-ft, 15/32nds-inch) diameter." As for the field drop, the allowable for a 23.38m throw would be .92 inches, 2.3 cm. The field was measured at about 7/8 of an inch; 2.2 cm over the allowable. Some calculations of the adjustment would make that throw a 23.32m throw on a perfectly level field, not a WR, but a WIR. However, that doesn't factor in the too-large throwing ring.

The shot put may have more room to break records than other events. I’m an old guy, back in the track days of mid 90s there were very few shot putters rotating. It was all glide. The glide favors shorter people due to the size of the ring. Long explanation but you get the gist. Thirty years later we have a truly huge man rotating well and the rotation gives a large man more ability to generate speed in the ring. His shorter competitors may still have an advantage but less so for sure. Rotating is not as big of a thing as the Fosbury Flop but does seem to be capable of bigger throws than the glide. I could be all wrong, I was never a thrower and it’s just fun to discuss.

There is a basic misunderstanding in this video - Crouser not only set a new Indoor World Record, he set a new World Record, period. While for convenience, we say "outdoor" world records and "indoor" world records, the 2 categories of records are: World Records; Indoor World Records. World Records have been kept since 1912; Indoor World Records only since the 1990s. For certain events, marks set indoors are also eligible for the absolute mark, such as we have seen most frequently in the men's and women's pole vault, once the rule was changed about 20 years ago. When Duplantis set a new WR of 6.21m at the WC last year, he added an impressive 5cm to the old outdoor mark, the biggest improvement in almost 40 years. But that wasn't the World Record being broken: that mark had been set indoors at 6.20m the previous March. So the "real" improvement was 1cm, not 5cm.
In a similar way, the 23.38m mark Crouser set should more properly be weighed against the World Record that stood - at 23.37m - not against the Indoor World Record of 22.82. So, while a 56cm increase in the Indoor World Record sounds impressive, it seems less so when measured against the existing World Record, an improvement of just the bare minimum - 1cm. This suggests that far from being a mark of Beamonesque proportions, since only a 1cm World Record improvement was seen, the indoor mark was probably a very soft one.

Sorry to be a downer, but it looks like this mark will not be ratified as either a World Record or Indoor World Record. The current World Athletics page lists Crouser's 22.58m in New York on Feb 11 as the longest throw of the year, well below his 22.82 Indoor World Record and far behind his 23.37 World Record. Couldn't find a reference as to why, but it's not on the yearly indoor lists anymore, nor on the list of World Records, or of Indoor World Records, even though Duplantis' 6.22 is on both the World Record and Indoor World Record lists. ("World Records" are listed as "Outdoor" World Records there so as to be less confusing, but marks set indoors can stand as World Records, depending on event.)
But, as I have said repeatedly, given that 22.82 Indoor World Record mark was first surpassed as a World Record in 1975 by Brian Oldfield, and fully 23 times 22.82 has been surpassed outdoors by 7 different athletes, the 23.38 (apparently not to be ratified) World Record and Indoor World Record is much more pedestrian when compared. The World Record would have been bested by the smallest increment allowed - 1 cm, suggesting that the Indoor World Record is a very soft record.

Cool video idea. Crouser is the GOAT of shotput for SURE. I'm going to make a couple critiques of the beginning.
Muhammed Ali isn't the unquestionable GOAT of HW boxing. I think Tyson would get many votes. I think Tyson Fury might get some too. Serena also isn't the unquestionable GOAT of women's tennis either. I personally think Navratilova is the GOAT (59 major titles vs 39 for Serena) and Graf was the best player during her peak. All time great players competed in the Graf, Seles, Evert-Lloyd, Navratilova era. Serena has never faced an all time great player in her prime. Grand slams... Serena has 23 vs Graf's 22 but Graf got them all before 30 then retired while Serena had only 13 at 30 years old. There is an argument for all of them but Nav gets my vote.

The % thing is a bit misleading. In track time is a measurement over a fixed distance and are always less than the previous mark.
In field events the distance is always greater than the previous mark.
so there’s always greater room for improvement when adding as a percent of the previous record versus subtracting as a %.
When something is reduced by 50% it then needs to increase 100% in order to get back to square one.
It’s kinda subtle but records as a percent of improvement are deceptive when measuring distance vs time.

    @johndavisson344 ปีที่แล้ว +2

How are you calculating your % improvement? 1.02424 x 22.82 = 23.373 NOT 23.38. the ACTUAL % improvement is ((23.38/22.82)-1)x100 = 2.454 % (even more impressive than you are giving him credit for) Femka Bol's % improvement is 0.665% and 0.244% for the 3000 m record. Basically, take the absolute difference in old time (or distance) and divide by the OLD time (or distance). I think what you are doing is a % difference between the two numbers, which is close, but not the same. Think of it this way, if a person threw 10 meters and then threw 11 meters that would be a 10% improvement, I think you would call that a 9.5% improvement.

To compare sports to another is very difficult. But if you want to compare then you definitely forgot or did not think of Wayne Gretzky. He is without a doubt the GOAT hands down. He has more NHL records than all other players combined. He also stopped playing in 1999 and only one of his 60 + records has been broken since.
