  • How well does the Drawing Tool in the Brother Artspira App work? We're about to find out! The drawing tool allows users to create simple custom digitizing designs that can be wirelessly transferred to the Brother PE900 embroidery machine. Towards the end of the video, I also share my honest thoughts on the usefulness of the Artspira App and whether or not I think it's worth upgrading your machine for this feature.

I will be making more videos with the Brother PE900 this year and comparing it with the PE800. It boasts several enhanced features including more built-in embroidery designs, wireless LAN connection, color sort function, jump stitch trimming, and compatibility with Brother's Artspira App. This app has an assortment of additional free designs and project inspiration, along with the ability to draw your own embroidery designs and transfer them to the embroidery machine wirelessly.

The slider feature is for making something more angular or softer edges. The dots is for more angular to the end is softer curves. The image is for you to trace over. I hope that helps! :)

Jennifer - THANK YOU for this video. I too was looking all over for videos on how to use the Artspira App with my Brother NS2850D sewing/embroidery and scanncut machines. I was sold on being able to have all 3 talking to one another so I could create some unique designs. I was disappointed as the App totally left me wanting more. I thought it was just me and that I just didn’t figure out how to make the app more usable. Thanks so much for your review and keep up the great work on your channel. You are appreciated!

Glad to be of help! It is really strange that Brother has little to no support for this app, which is supposed to be a selling point for these newer machines. The next video will be more about the wireless connectivity, but I will say that I've been having issues with this feature...

@@SewingReport A bit late to the party, but -- I purchased an NQ1700e, because of the wifi aspect, something like the PE900, with some additional features. The Design Database Transfer program is clunky, but, considering I don't feel the Brother PE digitizing software is worth the money, I take it as the useable *utility* program it is: I digitize in Hatch, then transfer it with the DDT. In all honesty, it seems more like one of the old FTP programs than anything new and shiny.
The wifi on the 1700 was finicky. More than anything, if there was *any* upset to the home network -- power outage, WAN outage, etc., I had to do a full network reset in order for the machine and DDT to talk to one another again. That said, because of the way my workspaces are set up, it was still better than having to carry a USB stick back and forth across my house, or constantly have my laptop plugged into the machine. Ultimately, I took this more as an issue for being an early adopter, and expected the later iterations to be better.
On top of that, there were some serious mechanical issues that messed with the tension and overall stitching that my local shop couldn't seem to track down. After failing to stitch out some designs purchased from Urban Threads for Christmas, I switched to sublimation projects, and it sat for about six months before I touched it again. It repeated the same technical issues, and so I loaded it up and took it to the shop. I told them to take it, ultimately upgrading to a Stellaire XE1. It was a LOT more than I really wanted, but, I wanted the wifi access, as well as the larger hoop and some of the digitizing features built into the machine. The Artspira app didn't really factor in to the equation.
Thanks for the video, though -- I'd been messing with the software, and was curious if it was as not-user-friendly to others as it seems to me! Now that I've messed with it some, I find it'd be fun for simple line-drawing stitch outs, or similar, but -- like you -- I don't really find it as much of a value-added product. What would be more useful is something like the DDT that talks to both the SNC and the embroidery machine, without all the fluff and clutter of what Artspira tries to do. Having to export the SVG from Hatch for my applique files, for example, and then open Canvas Workspace to convert it over and THEN send it to my machine is a bit of a pain. That said, I still prefer the functionality of the SNC over a lot of the other offerings on the market for the moment.
... my experience and the existence of the Artspira app lead me to wonder what they have going with their QA/QC and R&D departments. =\

    Thanks for the demo!
I just downloaded this app, and figured that the image I put on was for tracing. Someone did mention that in the comments.
But its hard to keep the lines smooth.
Also it would have be nice to have a pallet from which we can color fill.
And then get rig of the lines.
I have a V5LE and still not sure if its WiFi or not!.
Ive only had the machine 4 day's.
And you're right absolutely nothing i could find on TH-cam.
I couldn't see and WiFi settings when starting my machine.
Am not too tec savvy 😂.
More advanced models have the ability to do much more.
    Anyway thanks for you video.
Be interested to see what next

Thank you for this demonstration. After watching, I tried to download the app, but I have an older IPad, so that did not work. I have a Brother PE-770, so I could not use the app to download embroidery files.
When I have to do something complex with embroidery design, I use Hatch software. However, sometimes I am at my embroidery machine, and I would like to combine lettering with another built in design, and there is no way to see this on the embroidery machine’s display. The app may be a quick way to add some words to an embroidery design. It may also be a fun way for a user who is new to digitizing to create a picture stitch.
The Brother app or Deer Legacy’s Design Doodler may be fun ways for someone to learn about digitizing, without having to pay thousands of dollars, and without having to practice for years. John Deer has many You Tube videos where anyone who is interested can learn for free

As for the drawing tool, I like that you’re able to create your own style font and embroider it. I think many great artist would really benefit from it, as you said.
Even having your child draw their own artwork and then embroider it would be so adorable to keep their artwork forever. Especially if you have them wear their own artwork on their T-shirts. It encourages creativity which is what kids need; to create and come up with things on their own, rather than have everything created for them; which is what AI does.
The free designs I’m not too fond of either. They’re cheesy looking.
But overall, it’s not too bad. I think it’ll improve overtime depending on how popular it gets. This app is at its beginning stages. I’m sure it’ll improve.
I’ll check to see if you have ArtSpira review for Scan-n-cut, Sublimation and PrintModa too.
Hopefully you’ll have reviews on them as well.
Thank you for sharing your honest opinion. I appreciate that. I prefer to know both sides, the Good and the Bad (and the ugly, lol) and form my own opinion.
As always, I enjoy your Sewing Reports. They are very helpful.

Digitizing is not an easy, or instant process at all. You did pretty well with free software. I agree Brother needs to do a lot more to support this app. I could not use it with my Scan N Cut because it wanted me to make another account. Maybe that has been fixed by now. But it’s free, so it’s hard to complain TOO much

I'm looking to upgrade my current home embroidery machines (I have multiple... One Brother and 2 Singers each with limited design customization capabilities). I saw this app for certain machines. I'm torn between two machines (one will use the app and is the most expensive, the other can stitch sideways in regular sewing mode). Your answer to my question could help me decide which one to choose. I'm a doll crafter and there are things I have come to want to find an easier way to do them... I'm getting older and my eyes and hands aren't what they used to be. I'm a little persnickety about doll features being uniform and I thought this app could be a solution to having two doll hands looking the same (they would only require a running stitch). But, now I'm not so sure. My question is, "does the design disappear after it stitches out once or, can you stitch it multiple times before it does?" I know you said it doesn't save the design... Which is ok because each doll is different and it would keep me from having a bunch of files I don't need. I will just do a fresh design with each doll. I just need to be sure I won't lose my doll hand after just one stitch out. I don't want to draw 2 hands because they won't be the same. A second question that just came to mind, can you duplicate a custom drawn design? That would be awesome. Then I would only have to do one stitch out since two hands would fit in either size hoop. The duplicate wouldn't have to me a mirror image.
This video was great and very informative. Thanks!

I totally agree with you. It’s very clunky. The only thing I use it for is transferring my files from my machine to the machine since I have a Mac and Brother did not have the data transfer ability which I did not realize and made me mad. I did use it to turn a black and white graphic into an embroidery design. It worked but wasn’t great. It’s crap, as you said!

The average person who does embroidery will not want to spend hours learning how to use a user unfriendly program. If Brother wants to make more sales, they will need user friendly apps as part of their selling point. I have the 2000 machine, but having some problems with the embroidery part of it for the same reasons described here.

You are right, Artspira is crap by a significant margin. We bought a NQ3700D and for some reason, it is not compatible with the brother apps like "My Stitch Monitor" and My Design Snap". The worst marketing mistake. Why would you sell and expensive piece of equipment and not have your won apps be compatible with it? It's like selling you a car but then you have to pay extra to install an engine. All I want to do is convert an existing design in jpg format to and embroidery format file like DST but it's impossible without having to pay extra for the interface. RiDiCulous..
Even on the drawing tool which you were demonstrating on your video had a image button you could tap on and upload but then it gives me a "There is no data that can be output. CM21001" message when I try to save it. I regret this purchase.
