That poor girl had it all. Debris, dermatitis, and a rock underneath it all. No wonder she was in pain. I whine if I step on a tiny piece of anything. 🤣. So glad you were able to help her. It’s so nice to see the compassion you have for these animals.

Dermatitis is a bane for many hooved animals, I think it was only documented in Italy in 1974. Not know if it spread more since, but likely did with more international animal trading and slaughtering animals in other countries.

I'm a Cajun and Indian from Louisiana and I've hunted and fished Louisiana my whole life! I always saw the cattle heading to the family camp and never realized how much work it is to keep these animals! I knew that horses and cows and bulls needed their hooves trimmed but not once did I think about infection or things getting stuck in their hooves! I always thought that the hooves were thicker and they didn't feel things like rocks or anything getting stuck in the hooves in fact I thought that the hooves were a lot thicker! What I also failed to realize is that with all of the weight they carry that objects would penetrate the hooves! I've been watching you for a while and this might be my first time commenting! You are definitely a Hooved animal's best friend! Keep up the good work bro!

I think people don't realize that the "wasted step" of cleaning a hoof isn't a matter of being lazy and not wanting to do an extra step - it's a matter of getting the cows in and out as quickly as you can, because you want to stress them out as little as possible. Even cows that are used to trimming are going to best stressed while in the chute, it's just their nature as prey animals. The less time they spend in there, the better for the cows... plus, Nate gets paid by the cow, not by the hour, so it's not really worthwhile to stress the cows more, stress Nate's back more, and waste time.
    Anyway.

No need for any kind of pain relief, hooves are like giant fingernails. The cows feel as much pain from this procedure as we feel from clipping our fingernails. He would have to cut ridiculously deep to reach the nerve receptors which would feel pain where the hoof meets the flesh.

@@LoudWaffle Thank you for your reply, I had no idea it went that deep and even knowing this work is being done by a caring professional you cant help but imagine what the animal feels

@@an_otherwanderer Yeah it's shocking to me too, just watching these videos gives me shudders sometimes because it seems like he's cutting so deep, and I don't know if it's because his tools are so sharp, but they make the hoof look so soft and fleshy.
But lots of other comments have described it how I've relayed it to you, and the way the cows always walk away looking happy as can be at the end of the videos speaks volumes.

Have you ever found a hoof so far gone that it had to be amputated? Or what is the protocol for something like that?

How long does it take for something like this to develop? It seems it would take weeks to happen and hard to understand why it wouldn't have been noticed sooner.

Animals especially large animals don't feel pain like a human.
For example a cyst or abscess on human you get numbing injections and doctor is very gentle removing.
On cattle that cyst or abscess could be half gallon milk to 1 gallon milk container or bigger and they cut it open with knife and make a 2 to 3 inch incision and many farmers don't give pain meds or antibiotics etc and fluid just runs out and then then push on area around cut to force all the neurotic tissue out and they leave it that way so it heals on it own.
When they make the cuts many times the cattle don't even flinch
So farmers do give pain meds etc.
But I have seen horses that had horrible horrible cuts and tears in skin that pealed back more that a square foot of skin and since it wasn't noticed in time since horses were out is pasture it can't be stitched closed and has to heal on its own.
      Animals just deal with it.

I don’t know why people question what you do, you clearly are an expert in this field. I personally am so happy to see that the cows are getting this treatment that is much needed and that they’re happy when you’re all done makes me very happy for the cow.
