Thank You for taking the time to create a clear video on how this should be done. You kept the chatter completely down and just gave clear instruction. I'm now a subscriber to your channel because of your effort many more of us Ham's can learn these valuable skills. Again THANKS 73's N5FJK
Glad you enjoyed it!
I just went through the same exercise with the same display, and TTL converter. One thing you didn't mention is if you want to display your hotspot transmit frequency you need to edit the area on the screen. If you click the t30 and t32 locations you can go to the bottom right area of the screen and look for the word "txt" you then enter your hotspot transmit and receive frequencies. Now they will show up on your display. Instead of clicking UPLOAD , if you didn't have the TTL converter you could click compile, then go to top right and click File then Open Build. Look for the newly created "tft" file and copy it to a clean with nothing else on it sd card. Put the sd card into the sd card slot on the back of the display and power up. It will load the same file to the screen.
I swear I watched this last night and attempted to leave a comment...then the video was no longer available....witchcraft....I was saying...that I wish I had more time to learn more about the Ras Pi, and associated accessories... but I keep seeing you post videos and the learning curve gets steeper and steeper!
ROFL, there was an error in the video so I pulled and re-uploaded.
@@TheSmokinApe I even had my comment proofread so I sounded smart...unlike this one..lol!
Lol @ proofreading! You sound plenty smart! 🤓
The USB micro connector at 1:10 is to test the display. You can plug a micro usb phone charger to this board connect the Red to + and Black to - on the small board with the micro usb and it has some demo stuff to check the display If the voltage / current from the adapter is insufficient then use at least a 5V 500 ma or more current to test
Thanks for the info Ravi, didn't know that!
NICE Display =) Great screen size for DMR HotSpot to have and all in one case is still small =) Thanks for sharing =)
Thanks Pat, this has been a fun little project. Thanks for watching!
Amazon link for the display and TTL board, display editor?
Great video my friend. I’m looking into one of these because I have no D Star repeaters nearby.
Thank you for this video. What is the difference between the Model 8-3.2inch-GLOBE-( SIMPLEX )-v1.2.HMI and Model 8-3.2inch-GLOBE-( DUPLEX )-v1.2.HMI. I have a dual hotspot. which should I install? Thank you.
It’s my understanding that simplex is for one antenna mmdvm and duplex is for two antenna mmdvm.
Great Video. Did you ever get a wiring diagram put together as you said you would in the video. I have the parts just need to figure out how to connect them to the MMDVM to make it work. Do i just use the serial adapter?
1:35 in the video.
YOU ROCK!!!!!!!! It works wonderfully! Thank you.
This is a wonderful tool to guide someone on the installation of a Nextion display and HMI files. After watching it I purchased the necessary parts and had a fun(?) time making it work. But now it does. How can we utilize the micro SD card slot on the Nextion display? Can it be used to store several different "screens"?
Glad the video was helpful. As far as I know, and I’m not an expert, the slot is used to load the initial screen. I’m not sure if / how it can be used for multiple screens. Sorry man 👍
Still usefull in september/2021. Very thanks...
Glad it helped!
Thank you for this video! Clean simple and to the point. It helped me a lot!
Glad it helped!
Do you or can you provide links to where you can get the matrixx to program the Nextion display like the one you have in this video
nextion.itead.cc/resources/download/
Looking for a how to so I can learn how to make my own display or be able to modify an existing display
How do you change talkgroups?
77kingofclubs you typically call a disconnect TG from the radio and then call the new talk group. It’s different depending on your radio 👍
I have the same display on order. It should be in tomorrow. I downloaded the editor but where can I get the file to install into the display? Thanks, Ken

Were you able to find the usb / serial converter?
@@TheSmokinApe Yes, It was a little over $7 bucks. I already had one but its used on another project. The driver was already installed from my previous which works on this one.
Do you have any other sites with hmi files? I didn't find to many on the site you listed. Can you tell me how to install the Nextion driver? Is it already built into Pi Star or something you need to add? Don't you have to edit the files for your transmitting/receive freq in MMDVM and in all the modes?
I believe this is the install instructions for the driver: on7lds.net/42/PiStar_Nextion
are there any other sites that have hmi files. I didn't find much of a variety at the PDODIB site
There are many out there, I used google to find them
You show the adapter to connect to laptop. But is it also required between pi computer and display? I'm using jumbospot which has micro USB. Doesn't the Raspberry already have TTL serial?
There are a few ways to connect, I connected with a USB interface from the pi to the display.
I tried and nextion editor hangs up or says didnot send interupt! when I try to upload. exactly match display to hmi file I got. any help
Which USBasp programmer did you use? The one I have is no longer support as far as drivers go.
Hey Bob, I used the DSD TECH USB to TTL Serial Converter CP2102.
What do these do.. raspberry pie..?
Basically they are small computers referred to as a Single Board Computer or SBC. They run a variation of Linux called Raspbian. Folks like to use them because they are very flexible, inexpensive and are powered over USB.
How do you plug in the screen to the hot spot? My Jumbo spot has micro USB ports.
Steve Baker you need a USB to Micro USB adapter 👍
Where do you install the Nextion driver or is the USB to TTL that doe's this instead, why is there no SD card installed bit confused, any more advice please.
If I remember correctly it was just the driver for the chip in the USB connector. I transferred the files via the cable and didn’t use the card 👍
@@TheSmokinApe brilliant stuff i think I need to get the USB to TTL but there are a few of them so not sure witch one to get is this the one ? www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07BBPX8B8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_Q553JM9FKRHAWBCYT91Y?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 Thanks Tom
That looks like to correct one 👍
@@TheSmokinApe nice one mate :) I'm still a bit clueless to how I install the nextion driver to the screen, or is it going to the Raspberry Pi Zero in the SSH panel in pi-star to install it 🤔
When I select Nextion, on the configuration page, there is no option for USB. Only none, modem, and /dev/tty/AMA0. So how do I select USB?
Use AMA0, that UART chip is a serial adapter
@@TheSmokinApe I tried them all but none work. The one thing I'm unsure about is the connection. I do not have any USB ports on my pi-zero W. But the display board actually likes TTL Serial, and on simplex boards, there is a Nextion connector with 5V, RX, TX, and Ground. And the adapter just converts from USB to TTL (using RX and TX). So, what I did was to tap the RX, TX on the GPIO and assumed that would give me the correct interface. Maybe I assumed wrong.
This is my setup: ipscone.com/photos/pi-star/splash2.jpg
RX is yellow from display, Blue is TX from display. I think this would be the signals that go to the Nextion connector on Simplex nodes. My duplex node eliminated that connector.
Shouldn't this work?
The rx from the display goes to the tx on the board and the tx from the display goes to the rx of the board, I can’t tell if you have it that way
Great video , thanks
Thanks, glad you liked it 👍
I need a refresher... I want to edit my nextion file. How can I save my existing screen file first? I need to swap the TG and TS. For some reason they ended up being reversed for what is being displayed. My display is using the existing pins on the HAT board that plugs into the Pi. I use Nextion modem ON7LDS 2 Can I save my existing display before I figure out how to edit the TG and TS thanks
I was told you can not read from a Nextion display.
Fortunately I had the same screen and same setup, struggled for ages until I came across this... it works...!!!! yea... great and thanks. Have you managed to get the BER and RSSI working as I suspect like mine it doesn't.. yet ? the actual display, (used the same one as yourself) is great as well so thanks to PD0DIB, beyond my expectations.... the flag country showing I have never seen before so this is a 11 out of 10... any updates to the BER etc be grateful... Thanks again. Malc G6CTX
Thanks man. I haven’t had time to fool with the BER or RSSi yet. If I get it working I will post another reply.
Any update man?
What were the product links that you were going to put in the description?
Dang, didn’t realize they were missing, it was going to be a link to the screen and the USB adapter if I recall correctly.
@@TheSmokinApe Yep, that's what you were going to post up. Oh, and your credit card numbers. :-P (Sorry, I couldn't resist that).
On a slightly related note, The way we have our Nextion set up is a raspberry pi with an STM32 mmdvm hat on top, and the Nextion connected to the hat. The hat as at /dev/ttyAMA0, but when I try to reach the Nextion through that, it fails. Am I going to have to use the USB adapter?
I’ve seen folks use them attached to the mmdvm. I’m not sure what setting that is though 😕
Thanks for sharing this video and information. 73 Steve de AA4SH
Glad it was helpful Steve, thanks for watching 👍
If you are good with driver issues and windows machines, i wonder if I might be able to get a little help from you. I cant get my TYT MD-2017 to program via my Microsoft Surface Pro 7. I can only program it via an old XP machine and another old Vista machine. I can't get the drivers figured out. '73 K0DPS
You said you would put links to what you were referring to but you didn't. The only links are ones that make you money.
Do all the Nextion displays have a SD card slot and instead of using the TTL converter could you load a SD card and boot it off the display for the changes?
Do you have a source to buy a display? I have a MMDVM now with the standard display that comes with the radio board but would like to add a larger display.
Does anyone sell the display and a case combined? They sell a plastic case for Nextion display for around $15. Would like to buy the case and display at same time.
I think the enhanced versions all have the SD card slot. I got mine from Amazon. I’m not sure if anyone sells the display and a case for the whole hotspot as a kit, you might want to check c4labs.
