    I’ve not visited this Heritage Railway, as yet. It looks like a well run organisation. Must put this one on the ‘railways to visit’ list. Thanks for sharing another delightful video, Paul. Cheers. Ron🙂👍

      Thank you Ron! Yes, lovely little heritage line this one. I really enjoyed my day here. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I will watch your Moreton-in-Marsh video soon - looks brilliant. Take care, Paul.

    I was resisting watching this train video but thought I would have a peep while quietly having an early cup of tea. I loved the steam and cliketty clack sounds, the Spring landscape and the happy little boy waving to the train. Bring back Ivor the Engine!. 😊 🚂🚃🚃🚃.

      Thanks Cathy! Yes, I know that my Railway and Canal Series videos aren't for everyone (although they are the most viewed on my channel) - it's why I try as much as I can to mix the content up on my channel. Glad you enjoyed this one though! I try and capture the atmosphere, the scenery, the non train sounds, as well as the shots of the trains and locos. I notice that a lot of the TH-cam train channels don't always do this. I don't watch a lot of them anymore because they can become very repetitive. Thanks again, and hope you had a lovely Coronation Day! Paul.

    I really enjoyed this Paul! It looks like a really lovely day out and you got some brilliant shots of the trains from all angles aswell as travelling along in the train. That Rover ticket was a real bargain!
    I liked the way people seemed to evaporate in the editing of some of the clips! 🤗

      Thank you Louise! Glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for a lovely comment. Yes, it was a lovely day and the rover ticket was great value too - I also found the volunteers very friendly. Thanks for the editing comment. I will have to tell you my secret! Take care, Paul.

    Thanks for your update on the line Paul. We've only visited once and that was just before Lockdown. I noticed the GWR steam engine, but it was not running on that day. I think they pulled the train with a diesel shunter. Re getting to Cricklade, they said they couldn't get as far as the original station and would have make their terminus in a park, just prior to the houses of the town. They also had a large mainline loco in the workshops, but I don't know if that's still there. We must get back again this summer and support them. It's probably our closest heritage line.

      Thank you Lionel and Mary! Yes, it is well worth visiting, but please check the website first for opening times and what is running that day. Yes, that is correct about Cricklade - the original station and site is now unfortunately built over. But, at least it will be within walking distance of the town centre, which is worth exploring in itself, and will give this line greater appeal. I loved both of these locos - both well turned out and in fantastic condition. The sound of the power of the electric-diesel when I was travelling behing it was incredible! You get the sense that the loco would like to go a lot faster than is currently permitted on this line. The GWR Collett Steam loco was in terrific condition too, indeed it had only recently been repainted and serviced. Both locos a tribute to the mastery of British engineering and craft. In the days when things were made here! All of the volunteers were friendly, and it is a lot less busy (good for me, probably not in terms of revenue for the line though) than the more famous heritage lines. Take care, Paul.

    What a fantastic day out, loved the shots on the train & off the trains. It amazes me how these heritage lines run & thrive. Everyone seemed to be having a hoot (managed to slip in a steam train noise there).

      Haha! Well done Faith! Love that - 'hoot'! Yes, that is true! It is always a pleasure to film around heritage railways - it isn't just about the trains themselves, great though that is, but also the romance of the past, the friendliness of the volunteers and the sights of people really out enjoying themselves. Thank you, take care, Paul.

    A wonderful video with both diesel and steam logos in operation. The future for this superb railway looks very bright with many logos being renovated. Through to Cricklade is going to happen. It's a bit like my situation. It's going to take time.
    Brilliant camera work, wonderful still photographs, loads of historical facts and a brilliant commentary. Congratulations - you have winner

    This was a complete surprise to me- I had never heard of this volunteer railway before. I do wish it well as the current financial situation is so bad at the moment.I hope it reaches Cricklade soon! Your video was beautifully filmed as usual giving a good idea of how the railway functions.

      Hi Diana. Yes, I think that is part of the problem - a lot of people haven't heard of it. Indeed, before I returned back to Gloucestershire a couple of years ago (after living in Cornwall & Devon) I hadn't heard of it either! However, it is a lovely little heritage line. Yes, I do so hope that they can get to Cricklade soon. Thanks for a lovely comment. Take care, Paul.

    Very interesting picture of a preserved railway beating the current financial odds to extend the line into Cricklade. Not far to go - looking at the OS map - so lets hope the bridge is not too much of a problem. I thought you captured the atmosphere - including the silences - extremely well. All grease to their elbow! Thank you.

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Malcolm! Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, it would be terrific if they can get to Cricklade. Over half a mile relaid since I was there a year ago - less than a half mile to go. To be honest, I am not sure what bridge the chap that I mentioned in the video was referring to, as I can't see any bridges between Hayes Knoll and Cricklade, unless he means repairs to the existing bridge at Blunsdon which carries the road over the railway - I would have thought that as it carries a road over, it would be the highways authorities problem, but I really don't know for sure. Thanks for your kind comments. Take care, Paul.

      @westcountrywanderings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Malcolm, I think that your last comment dissapeared, but I got the gist of it - about the bridge over the River Key. Yes, I think that is the most likely explanation. Wierdly, the bridge does not appear on the more detailed OS Map, only when you zoom out of it! Thanks for the additional information. Cheers, Paul.

    Paul I'm glad you gave the M&SWJR a mention
    This line despite passing through Swindon was not affiliated with the GWR but rather their Midland (later LMS) and South Western (later Southern) rival's
    Incidentally just north of Cirencester at Foss Cross is a rather dilapidated original station
    from this line still surviving despite having
    been closed in 1961!

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, Ron from 'Abandoned Railway Adventures' did a video featuring it recently. Quite a bit overgrown now (to be expected!) but still intact. I was thinking of looking at some of it in the Chedworth area. Little to see at Cirencester Watermoor now though, and nothing at the Cheltenham end, sadly. It is good that things are progressing towards Cricklade. Incidentally, I walked a mile section of the M&SWJctRly in Swindon recently while making the fourth in my Wilts & Berks Canal series, looking at the canal around Swindon. Some of it will appear in that video! Cheers, Paul.

      Yes it's great that it's survived for
      so long by being virtually forgotten
      ideally the S&C could rebuild it as their
      Cricklade terminus ensuring its survival 👍

    Hi Paul, Great video, I will have to have a look at your first one now!!
    I've read a fair bit about this railway in Steam Railway they are advancing really well in these difficult times. Very interesting to see that these locos were built in Newcastle, I just assumed it would have been built in the GWR region somewhere. As I looked up from my screen I saw another one of the same class, 5643 ..... but this was on my calender!! The internet tells me that bolier for 6695 was overhauled at the Flour Mill in the Dean Forest
    Also interesting to see was the diesel electric which ran off the third rail.
    You got some great shots of the engines running round and all of the other associated activities. All in all a great day out, well done!!
    All the best

    • @westcountrywanderings

      Thank you David!
      Glad you enjoyed the video. That's a brilliant coincidence that you have the photo of 5643 on your calendar right now! A lovely Collett! Yes, the Flour Mill have done some amazing work for the heritage sector.
      I loved both of these locos, and, as you saw, impeccably turned out. The electric-diesel sounded like the engine had immense power; I am sure it gets frustrated by the 25mph limit of heritage lines. A very odd sounding loco too - first time I have seen a bi-mode loco on a heritage line. Both British built and a credit to engineering skills - never happens now, alas!
      Thanks again,
      Take care,
      Paul.

      Hi Peter, I covered the historic Ryeford Mill (which is on the at risk register) a little while ago. Sadly, no progress has yet been made on its restoration. A lot of the others are in private ownership and/or have been converted to private housing making access difficult, if not impossible, to film in and around. However I am working on a project to cover one of the mills as a video in the future. Thanks for the comment. Take care, Paul

      @westcountrywanderings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Peter, yes I have covered it in detail in one of my long running 'Stroudwater and Thames & Severn Canals Update' series. I am also following the progression of the restoration of Brimscombe Port with interest and I will bring developments here on my channel. Cheers, Paul.
