    The dude conveys so much emotion with a scream and I'm here for it. Just insane.

      To be fair, it's not just the screams.

    “If you feel like it, at any point, pick a tempo.” Man, thats classic! Gotta love this man! His ability to go from a beautiful, controlled, clean voice to those ungodly screams and back to clean just impressed the hell out of me, but then I’m no vocalist so maybe I don’t really know what I’m talking about. Anyway, thanks for sharing your Video. Cheers!

    When you said they need to boost his mic, devin has actually talked about this and explained it on two levels.
    On a artistic note he said that he often tries to go for a wall of sound feel in his productions which is of course especially apparent in deadhead. He feels like a voice cutting to clearly through that mix and elevating itself over the other instruments would harm that approach, which I think is a fair point.
    On a more psychological level he says it also stems from a lingering deep routed insecurity about singing in front of people. I know it sounds ridiculous coming from such a godlike vocalist, but it's still an extremely relatable feeling.
    This is from the teatime interview with the charismatic voice by the way, huge recommendation! 😊

    There is an amazing performance where he’s playing a pretty small venue and someone in the audience asks if Devin remembers him. He is visibly pained when he says he doesn’t….. and then a few minutes later, he stops in the middle of his song….. because he remembered him and apologizes and gets into the details of their previous interaction - it is epic. But that is the person he is…..

    I saw Devin when he was lead Vox & guitarist for Strapping Young Lad… they were the special guests of Fear Factory in Toronto.. and absolutely laid waste … FF had no chance after they played.. the most PUNISHING display of metal I ever witnessed live

    What you say about his intimacy and audience participation, it’s pure magic. Saw him last year at a decently sized club gig, maybe 1000 people in the audience. During that concert, he made full eye contact with me multiple times despite me being up on the balcony to the side, and I felt like “he sees me, and acknowledges me”. And the thing is, I’m sure everyone else there had the exact same experience. He’s just got a magical way of connecting with the crowd, as a whole and as individuals.

  • @Denashi
    @Denashi ปีที่แล้ว +78

    Oh, I thought you heard... they did try to turn up his mic during soundcheck... the sheer force of his voice opened up a miniature dark hole, that swallowed up three crew members before they could turn it off again...

    What makes this performance even crazier is that he was recovering from sickness at the time. So, that's him singing with his sinuses/throat etc working against him 😯🤦🏻‍♂️

    She's either telling Devin she wants his baby, or that it might be his baby. LOL. Awesome reaction video. He's gotta be the most unique Musician to ever live. LOL. To me, this is the best vocal presentation in the last 20-25 years in Metal, or any other music to be honest, of any song made in that time. This has to put him on the same level as people like Freddie Mercury, Steve Perry, Rob Halford, Ian Gillan, Dio, ect. I believe he's wrote this song in 2003, and been perfecting it ever since. Kinda a big difference between the original and this modern version. And some say he had the flu when he did this show? Just Wow.

  • @drewconleymusic

    This song is one of his really serious ones. A lot of his songs are really goofy and silly and his fans love it, but this one, as he said, is about love and how "love's a bitch." It's about how love is a great thing, but it can be really hard sometimes. Mostly inspired by his time away from his wife while touring and the loneliness he feels as well as the strain it can put on a relationship.

    Devin is my equal favourite artist on the planet (with Rush....you bloody Canucks!). I've been a rock journalist since 1995, I've interviewed him probably 12 times, he's my absolute favourite interview subject too - like you say, so genuine, so intelligent, so articulate. Now do the Retinal Circus version of 'Grace', the Order of Magnitude live version of 'Genesis', and for the sweeter, more melodic side of Dev, do 'Why?', and 'Ih Ah'. Then for something COMPLETELY different, do some Strapping Young Lad ('Love?', 'Shitstorm', 'All Hail the New Flesh', 'OhMy F*cking god'). By the way, I've watched this clip a thousand times, and I've never notice the lady with the baby on her phone!

    • @snizzle6174
      @snizzle6174 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I mean, I don't know if he's said anything to this effect or not, but the reason it's like that here is the level of dynamic range he's applying over the like constant groove. His projected singing and screams are balanced well, but then he starts at a very quiet place because that's how he wants to sing it. Some live compression would help that, but then I could totally believe that he thinks it would hurt the song and that part of it is that it's under the band in those sections.

  • @voidcat6876
    @voidcat6876 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    the mic thing is a very him thing in live and album mix , he stated in some interviews that he genuenly feels that his voice should not take the prime spot over every thing else in the band , and he said something like ´´people dont pay to just hear me sing´´or something along those lines

    1:06 I expect no less reaction for whenever i crack one of my bad jokes,in Rachaels direction
    It is with this performance of this very song,most people have declared him "unhuman",especially on this mark 12:07
    Lost count on how many people have measured his note there,and found it to be on the edge of what is humanly possible to do.
    Oh,you know i wanna see more!😏 (You better laugh! ....... At least a chuckle like Devin got!)

    • @mrfahrenheit677
      @mrfahrenheit677 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's definitely not on the edge of what is humanly possible to do lmao. At least definitely not pitch wise. I can easily hit that high note, I just can't do it with the same tone that he does...and most people can't. But that's just due to how his throat works, but because it's an insanely high note that's nearly humanly impossible. That's just ridiculous to say. People really just make up stuff I guess
