- These three songs were the best part of the night for me. Not that the rest of the night was bad, mind you....but these songs!! As great as all of Devin's other stuff has been, there's something so raw and pure about all of the songs on Ocean Machine, especially these three.And you can see it in the way Devin behaves during the performance. I screamed like a little girl when he announced he would be playing Funeral!
Anyway, this performance solidifies Devin's position at the top. Go buy his entire discography right now!

I firmly believe that the recording of this concert belongs in the Smithsonian. This music needs to be preserved for future generations.
On that note, they should re-make the gold record sitting in the satellite, and send the message to other species that something beautiful was created here in earth which inspired future generations.

'Funeral' is, in my opinion, the single greatest piece of music that has ever been written.
Saw Devin several years ago in my local hometown. He stood on that stage and screamed his lungs out. Then, after the show, I met him, and he said in the most gentle voice imaginable, "thank you so much for coming out to support me". I cried, and then I had him sign my pants with a Sharpie. Truth.
When I saw him live he stayed to meet with people from the crowd and stayed until everyone was able to say hi and talk. The club owner came by to tell him to wrap it up cause he wanted to start cleaning and clear out the place. Such an amazing personable musician, and the fact he took that extra time after performing all night is something I will never forget.

Look at me, 58 yrs young and heard this first time in my life after a friend of mine (60+!) shared Deadhead with me in Sep 2020 with the remark "Listen to this, but till the end!" 😅 Meanwhile, I'm completely hooked on HevyDevy's "Wall of sound & voice" ... The best experience I had in corona year 2020 and I will cherish it forever 🙏
Almost same story as me, minus Christmas Eve. Don’t know how I never crossed paths with his music. Everything I listen to, I should’ve. Pissed I missed so much, but glad I’m here now.
I hope you managed to check out Devy's Christmas gig he did from home (along with his other Quarantine concerts). He's just wonderful. "One of a kind" doesn't quite encompass it.
I had listened SYL in the past and heard about Devin but a month ago started listening to Devin and man...I feel like and idiot and absolutely blessed at the same time

Remember Devin Townsend at this point in the show, Has already sung the first full Z2 disc as the first set. And in the second set has already sung over a dozen hard ass songs. That were vocally impossible for the normal human being. These three songs in a row, are amazing.

I have just found Devin for the first time, this is the first performance of his that I have seen, I grew up listening to Pink Floyd and thought that that was the greatest music I would ever experience in my entire life, well that’s just been blown away.
The last track says it all, I will never be the same.
I also just noticed that at 26:58, he has serious goosebumps on his arm. This is a true musician, one who feels his music and doesn't just play sounds for the sake of it.

Now in 2018 the Plovdiv live appeared and the same goosebumps when singing Death..It wasn't the cold :)))
for real though - imagine and remember the very FEW times you get goosebumps listening to music - you remember specific events. i don't know if you're a musician or not but after playing music for 20+ years, i've never got goosebumps playing live. adrenaline? ya.... feeding off the crowd....of course. feeling like you're on top of the world...sure..... but goosebumps? that's something that could only happen with when your own art truly resonates as much with the listener as it does for yourself. and this record came out like 20 years before this performance. i wish i fucking discovered this album when it came out in the 90's. i only just discovered a few months ago. devin townsend....good grief sir. a musicians's musician.
@@rsoulburnz The song, to me, seems about finding self worth in the midst of depression and grief. Given his struggles in his early career with his mental health, I can see why it still means so much to him even years after he has come to accept himself is dorky interests.

It's miles better. I skip it most of the time when I listen to OM; here it's amazing.
Dev does everything better live. It’s his home. First heard him live in VIA in the early 90’s. Been hooked ever since :-)
Mozart is/was his equal, at the very least.
What amazes is me is the fact that many people kept an ear on those tracks that, I have to admit, I also skipped. They pushed for these to be played, and of course his live performance would be polished and colossal. This trio of songs are among the most incredible compositions I've ever heard. I can't imagine how immense must have been to be right there...

Imagine, when this album came out Devin had a very difficult time getting this to a record company. Now look, after all these years they are being played live at a venue like this. Good show, Devy, these songs deserve it, you deserve it.
He would still have a difficult time getting this to pretty much any record company except for the niche ones like Inside Out Music, as good as it is it still has zero potential for hitting the mainstream.
That’s the reason strapping happened, no one listens, but now the whole world listens 👍

Not just difficult. Heavy as a really have thing(SYL's first album) netted him 5 album deal, despite being, in his own words, "couple of good songs and a bunch of demos". Ocean Machine he had to self-publish and then sell the distribution rights, or something along those lines. Worked out great for him long term, because he actually owns all of his solo catalogue.

Which is fine, nothing wrong with selling out at the end of your career, but I doubt Devin is anywhere close to that point in his career yet. He exudes creativity.
This version of Funeral is wild... it's performed so well, captured and recorded so perfectly, that I am sort of left speechless by it. This whole concert might legitimately be the best live performance I have ever seen.
Discovered him 2005 freshman year of high school. I had just gotten a 5th generation iPod that my brother dumped all of his music in to for me.
We were on vacation, and there I was sitting in the car at night on our way to Florida scrolling through, listening to bands - the As, Bs, Cs, then I get to Devin Townsend. It was like a spiritual experience. I don't think I made it to the Es for the rest of the trip.
Devin did the same to me. Listening to his music just opens your soul up.
These 3 songs in a row are Probably the best 28 minutes you can find on youtube... Truly amazing

I can't believe I actually was there...so surreal. I'd travelled from abroad to accompany my at the time-boyfriend, and my health was a wreck, could hardly walk up a stair, and feeling generally awful, like I had to shield myself from all noise, light etc. Then, it all lifted like magic as I walked into the Hall and I felt the vibe, and the music started. I don't have enough words to describe his music. But the feeling from it is pure bliss and awesomeness!
Ocean Machine is his most naked and honest album. He just bared his entire soul on that record.
It's what makes it so good... this was his therapy after the chaos of recording Alien and walking away from Strapping.

I think "Death of Music" is legitimately one of my favorite songs ever. I love so much of his stuff (thanks to my husband for turning me onto it!) but Ocean Machine is, by far, my favorite. This section of the set was just incredible.
This is how I always dreamed of these Ocean Machine tracks being played live, one seguing into another seamlessly and along such an enthralling emotional roller coaster ride...

Was love at first listen when I heard Vampira on KNAC.com about 8 years ago. Seen DTP live twice and will see them everytime they are close to me.

I doubt I've ever heard a better recorded/produced live performance than this, at moments it's even better than the already terrific studio versions.

The only live recording that I personally know of that's as good and crisp as this is Fu Manchu's love album "Go For It... Live!" (It's also one of my favorite recordings in general)
The entire concert lasts about three hours. Twenty-four songs. This is the twenty-third. Nevertheless, he sings it with a power, a freshness and a disarming naturalness! Even better than the original of Ocean Machine! He's not human. What a voice!! Incredible, magical.
I have the blu-ray of the concert. It's one of the things I will be grabbing on the way out if my house ever catches fire.

These are absolute MATERPIECES written by a young prodigy. Although they were released in 1997, they PERFECTLY capture the loneliness, death, despair, fear, hopelessness and uncertainty of 2020. I have always loved and related to these songs deeply, but they are ESPECIALLY real and cathartic right now. It's hitting harder than ever. 😢

I only just found out about Dev about 2 months ago. I've been listening no stop since and discovering the nuances of his talent. Thanks for posting this awesome version. I want to see him live so bad. I would have loved to have seen this line-up. This band seems so tight. I hope he is doing well enough to support himself and family. He deserves a lot more recognition. I was surprised that I had never heard of him because I play guitar and devour so much in music. I was floored to find out about him and sad that so many opportunities were missed for me.
The only thing I hate about Devin's songs is when it ends. I have never enough ... God, what an incredible Artist.

to a lot of music throughout my life (Thrash, Metal, Black, Heavy, Stoner, Doom, Sludge, Hardcore ...) being the Trash what I love the most. I have to say that this man is very undervalued. He is a true genius and the best musician in the scene. His creativity is impressive, his concerts perfect, his ability to take us with his songs to have sensations that only he can do ........ I do not have qualifications. Just say that I hope more people discover the art that this man shares with the world.

11:35 that girl to the left was me when I saw Devin warming up for Satriani many years ago. I closed my eyes and didn't open them for almost the entire performance. It was almost an out of body experience.
And it really warms my heart seeing that most of the people in this crowd are actually truly enjoying the music instead of seeing it through a smartphone.
This really is the best three song combo he's done live, I think. There's such an energy about it. It flows effortlessly, one into another, and you sort of 'get' why these songs have to be played back to back. The way the mood starts sad from Funeral and then an angry loneliness in Bastard, then a quiet contemplativeness in DoM. The way the crowd reacts when Death of Music starts is beautiful, you can feel the surprise thick in the air. It's honestly an astounding and moving set.

Been an extreme metal music headbanger for two decades. I hated non guttural vocals. Was/Am a huge fan of SYL. mid 30s approach and couldn't register any new extreme metal. was looking for something new, something I could become a fan of. Hell no, cannot take any music which is guitarless. Then discovered Devin Townsend project. What a godsend!
Today is the day that my dad funeral is taking es place I haven’t seen him almost 20 years now but his dying wish was to see me one last time but this never happened because of the COVID situation but l can live through his memories with music like this thanks D.T.

Bloody hell, I only just read the lyrics of Funeral and the meaning behind it. Hit me right in the feels like a meteorite. I lost one of my closest schoolmates at 15 who was hit by a car. I had recently lost contact as she had just changed schools to follow her dream. I was later told that when she was on her way to school, some kids on the bus were bullying her so she fled from the bus at the next stop. She didn't look, I guess she was so upset. She didn't see the car she ran in front of. She was in ICU with severe brain trauma and was pronounced brain dead a few days later before they turned off her life support. Melody Sanders was 15, her life was cut short in 1992. So. Similar age, similar timeframe to Devy. I was unable to attend her funeral and that hit me hard. We tried to care for her younger sister Leah, who was shattered. They'd lost their mum a few years earlier to cancer. I still love Leah to bits and catch up with her whenever we can, though we now live over 3500km apart. This song truly does capture the essence of life taken too early, senselessly. I think the driver is another victim here, as is her family. I hope those bullies know what they did that day. I never did find out who they were.
Fuck....I had a similar , kind of story. The day i got the ocean machine album, I went home and listened to it, led on my bed, just letting it all sink in.
The following day, one of my school mates walked out on a busy A road and walked in front of a van. He was caught by the police steeling a car, his parents were away on holiday and he didn't want them to find out. He died before he got to the hospital.
Funeral is a beautiful song, but its so hard for me to listen to.

Lost my best friend at 15 as well, he just woke up one morning struggling to breathe and his heart gave up. Our whole freind group got through it by hanging out in an old caravan and going a bit crazy for a few months. Weird how music can dredge up 30 year old memories. Such is the power of heavy Devy

seen devin so many times didn't bother again after retinal circus, then I see he did this last year. FFS. Every show I hoped to hear Funeral
I have just discover it today. I know Devin but now this one. I'm stuck (probably for next week) with this performance. I can hear it even when I don't listen it. Sow deep. Amazing.
I believe that certain individuals are the modern day equivalents of the great composers. I am sure when we look back in 250 years time that Devin will be put into this category.

This was my first ever gig with Devin and I had only discovered him about six months before that and was lucky to get a ticket to this show. Was absolutely amazing and Funeral was probably the highlight of the show for me. Absolutely amazing artist and I'm so damn happy that I got to see the Plovdiv show as well.

"The Death of Music" is one of the most beautiful things I have ever listened to.
I have this soul-shattering feeling that I'll never have the wisdom required to interpret its meaning. Maybe I'm not supposed to, and it's just a train of thought by Devin, who lays down raw feelings on tape about everything he was feeling in a barely coherent string of poetry.

I think he is basically using an analogy that when music dies, the world dies with it, or that it may as well because that's how important music is to the human mind. Without music, we wouldn't be able to express ourselves in such indescribable ways and thus we'd have our emotions and thoughts bottled up inside us with no release, slowly driving us to madness...
Thus, when every man fades into madness, the world ends. If the world ends and man fades into madness, it could very possibly be because no one understands what music is meant to be anymore. I think Devin is not only expressing his own thoughts on the subject but is also giving us a warning of sorts: if we keep viewing music purely as sound, or as business, how much longer will it be before we destroy ourselves as a whole by letting everything that means something to us continue to fade away?

I thought the song was about developing anxiety. Mainly because of the variations of the "...myself and I, there are no others" refrain. Essentially it's about anxiety slowly creeping up on him. At first he brushed it off, and no one around him noticed. Then his friends noticed but he continued to distance himself from them. In the end he's trapped alone in his head ("...myself and I, there are no other").
I could be wrong though. The lyrics could just as easily be interpreted to be about life and the inevitability of death.
I disagree with y'all. I think this is about manic depression and how he was slowly killing himself with alcohol and drugs. How his anguish fuelled his music and how his supposed friends just laughed when he was acting out, even though he might have been acting out for quite other reasons than to get a laugh.
I interpret "the rain will come" as a bout of depression coming on. When "death becomes musical", it's about how he withers away while creating music, how that withering somehow was reflected in his creative process and how he couldn't help neither killing himself nor writing music.
Luckily he's sober and in much better mental health now. Bipolar disorder sucks.

I agree with you to a degree that the three "the rain will come" verses are about depressions, being someone that suffers from depression myself. The first verse is about how he deals with it through hanging out with friends, the second verse being him looking up to someone - lover, some figurehead, we may never know. The third verse being about his realization that he has come to term that he'll have to be himself, and channel his creativity through who he is, and create art that way.
So powerful. By the end of Death of Music it never fails to bring a tear to my eye

Chills literally the entire fucking time! I would have literally lost it if I got the opportunity to see Devin play these beyond beautiful songs live.....ESPECIALLY "The Death of Music" as that is such a personal and special song for me. Devin couldn't have sang it better than he did on this night. In fact he made it even better..... tears of joy behind my computer screen.

+Frank I'm sorry... I must be deaf. Nowhere in that entire 3 song stretch did I hear Devin's voice fail. When you compare this to the quality of live performance you get from most bands now days, it's pretty mind blowing. I go to A LOT of shows and Devin is among the very best! No fucking doubt about it.

I discovered him in early 2019 before shit went down all around the world. Im so deep in Dev's catalog that he became my favorite musician of all time
Don't worry, I discovered him in 2006 by pure accident and it took me until 2011 to absorb all of his material to that point! Take your time and enjoy!
To this day. for the past 20 years, Funeral is still my fave song of all time. And these 3 songs in succession, The 3rd act of Ocean Machine. Just masterful music.
The song Funeral was playing in my head while I carried my Grandmother's casket, in the rain. Funerals are hard, surreal, and strange. 2 years later, I carried my other grandmother, again in the rain. This comment's for those who've also been to funerals in the rain. Guys, what am I going to do, there's going to be more funerals. I'm 36, I'm not even close to coming to terms with this kind of stuff.
I know this is very late but it is eerie that your story is pretty exactly the same as mine. Funeral is one of the most meaningful songs to me because of that.
