“Pick a tempo” was about trying to get them clapping in time. That’s why he went up the top and clapped. You can see him exchanging an eye roll with the drummer.
Devin Townsend - metal musical maverick! Almost his entire discography is in the upper echelons of what metal can sound like. He's released music as Devin Townsend, Devin Townsend Band, Devin Townsend Project, Strapping Young Lad, Casualties of Cool and spread over three decades and about 27 albums. Deadhead is from Accelerated Evolution by The Devin Townsend Band.
Agreed. The man is a legend. He's a God. He might as well be a myth too. But I'm also super pissed. I pre-ordered the Devolution Series #2 live show that I also bought a ticket for and watched when it happened. Ordered back in May. Was supposed to be released June 25th. Got pushed back to July 20th. Finally shipped. Was supposed to be here 2 days ago and the post office must have lost it. Been no updates on tracking since the 22nd. Been waiting for this for so long. Such a good show.
@@xMRxZEROx oh no!!! I watched this too, and also bought it as a prerelease and have had it about a month now I guess! The dvd is good, but I’ve also got it on vinyl. That’s where it shines! Hope it turns up soon!
@@JimNewstead Thanks man. Me too. I've been eagerly awaiting it so I can blast it in my car and subject my town to the wonder of Devy yet again. 🤣 Hopefully if USPS lost it I can get a new one sent for free. Not that I wouldn't gladly pay again. But I shouldn't have to.
Somehow I stumbled across your video, and I'm glad I did, it made my day. It's a dreary Monday evening, cold and rainy here in Washington state USA. I've seen this clip of Devin a zillion times, Devin is a special soul for sure. BUT seeing your reaction, hearing your compulsive comments and facial reactions - you helped me appreciate this song all over again, thank you! It was just a pleasure seeing you discover this song and the man. AND it appears all of your videos are over a year old, nothing released in 12 months? Maybe you've quite. Just know this 64 year old man would love to have your hair vs my bold head, ha... but that's life now ain't it!
Devin is a brilliant Canadian musician. Starting out singing for Steve Vai's band and then founding Strapping Young Lad... his most aggressive and angry material by far. Going under different names for different styles... Devin Townsend, The Devin Townsend Band, Devin Townsend Project... He blends theatrics and puppetry into many of his iterations and is just an all around amazing performer.!
Yes. Although this is a go-to 'react' video, its actually not his best vocal performance due to said germs :( The vocals at Plovdiv are fantastic and I saw him perform Deadhead live in London (just before all this Covid pain-in-the-ass) and I thought that was a better performance still.
Hi. I'm Markus from Germany. I love this version of DEADHEAD. Devin Townsend IS a very Well known guitar Player for years. I am a guitar player myself. Devin was not on my list. And I did not know, how great He can sing. Until I SAW this Royal Albert Hall recording.
I love this live version, and your reaction to it is one of my favourites to watch... And every single time when you say, "imagine if he fell down the stairs" I laugh so hard! Oh the imagery! Brilliant reaction, and thank you for often brightening my day. :)
His performance of “Grace” at the Roundhouse (the Retinal Circus show) is great, but my favourite is “Supercrush” live with Anneke van Giersbergen, which I think you might like too - it’s in a smaller club setting.
Devin is pretty unique, but his music typically falls into the “Prog Metal” genre. Devin is indeed incredible live. He’s also a very sought after music producer.
Strapping Young Lad, Devin Townsend, Devin Townsend Project, Devin Townsend Band. Staples of my listening and gigging for some 26 years now. If you've not had Dev on your radar before then wow, you've got a glorious rabbit hole to have fun with.
Ive probably watched your reaction to this maybe 50 times. First and foremost youre stunning but that speechless look of awe you have when he does his last 3 epic screams gets me everytime
Wonderful reaction Yaz. Always great to see people on here hearing and seeing Devin got the first time. I genuinely loved your reaction to this. You seem like you have a sincere passion and love for live music . Devin is a living legend. My other half always says he must be an alien with his insane vocal range ever since I introduced her to his music (she used to sing in a choir). I'm old enough (and lucky enough to have seen a wide and diverse range of bands and artists over the last 33 years since I was 15 in 1988 (My first gig was right down the front of the old NEC in Birmingham for Iron Maiden). I love the Deftones too and have done for 25 years now, but I wouldn't class Devin in the same genre and as much as I love Chino Moreno, his vocal range is not a patch on Devin's. It's a big rabbit hole to get into with Devin as he has covered so many styles with that voice. Incidentally, if you want to hear his music sounding a lot more more heavy and intense then check out his Strapping Young Lad stuff from the mid 90's to around 2005 ish. It's fecking nuts and so damn heavy!
just came across your reactions. really enjoying them. love me some devin townsend and jinjer reactions. dont worry about not having the words to describe things, we all can see in your facial expressions what you mean to say. it has been a bit since you posted any reacts here, but here is a fan and here is one person who hopes you get back to it.
So it says this video is from a month ago, but it just popped up today in my list, and I check daily for Devin reactions lol To get a good take of his opera side, Kindgom live from Emgtv, or him singing Bring Him Home from the Les Miserables soundtrack. But arguably his best vocal performance is from this same concert, The Death of Music, Live at the Royal Albert Hall version. You're right in that the album versions aren't as good live, and with Devin that couldn't be more true. Cheers!
Devin Townsend really sells his live performances. The original has a similar vibe, but not on the same level. He originally released the song in 2003. Unfortunately, Devin Townsend Project no longer exists. The good news is that Devin Townsend as an artist has been making a ton of music over decades. Since this performance, I think he's come out with 2 albums since this performance in 2015. Both are a journey to listen to. He's got a double album planned to be out this year, with another expected late this year or early next year. There are plenty of older performances to recommend before getting to his newer work, but if you're interested in a more recent song that includes some of his guitar chops, you should check out the live performance of Failure at Plovdiv in Bulgaria. It's from his Transcendence album from 2016. It's good vibes.
Ah, just stumbled across your reaction to this on a random post-pub Friday. Feels like introducing a mate to something you love, even though it's a weird one-sided chat 😂 Also Team Sleep, Deftones and NiN shout out. *Chef's kiss*
Devin Townsend will be back in London at the Royal Albert Hall on April 16th and 17th next year.... If I may suggest, listen to the trilogy Funeral, Bastard and The death of music from the same Royal Albert Hall concert or from the Plovdiv concert.
devin townsend and project are phenomonal. kingdom live for emgtv a must. heavy devy see love from his strapping young lad days. his performances are ethereal
Fun fact. Devi is Canadian. Mike Meyers is Canadian. Mike Meyers did the Austin Powers movies. He wanted an accent that no one could figure out for Dr Evil - it’s a Canadian accent.
Devin Townsend Project as a band is no more, BUT, Devin Townsend still plays the songs from the DTP records at his live shows and they're every bit as good for sure. I went to the last show he did before COVID cancelled all the shows, and they had stuffed animals (including the Pikachu I brought) all over the stage.
Devin's a legitimate music-genius. He's just DT now, after the DTP phase ended; which was after the 'Strapping' (mental!!/metal) days. If you want chills (there multiplying! :) ) then go check out ' Failure ' live at Plovdiv ... or 'Higher' at Plovdiv for an emotional roller-coaster.
Devin is my favorite artist of all time. He's a good shoehorn into the amazing genre of progressive metal. If you want to see unbelievable talent, you should check out Ne Obliviscaris, my favorite band. Their most popular video to react to seem to be "As Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope" live in Colorado. 2016 I believe. Absolutely unbelievable band, and the guys were so great and down to earth to have a conversation with. Everyone who watches them is always floored.
Oh, and your Deftones comment made me realize for the first time that there's definitely a similar feel to "Digital Bath" in parts of this song, which is awesome. What a "vibe" track that is.
You’ve done one Nightwish…. Between Devi and them, you’ve only touched the surface of a whole world. Devi can introduce you to Anneke, she can take you to Ayreon and Arjen, that launches you in multitudes of directions, Simone and Epica, more Nightwish, Tommy and Kamelot which links Elze and Alissa, Amaranthe and Arch Enemy….. Hansi, Michael, on and on, just the entrance to the rabbit hole….
You are literally the only person other than me, who has uttered "I love this a fuck-ton" That was a different Devin song. But I think we just bonded a little...you're just finding out now.

As far as I know, Britain is one of the places he does really well. There are several live shows from London. The Ziltoid Royal Albert, The Retinal Circus and By a Thread. Each epic in their own way. Once you've done that, branch out further into Opeth and go down the prog metal rabbit hole...
A great artist who always surrounds himself with excellent musicians.. he also manages to kill it solo. If you like things a bit keener go back to the nineties and early 00's with Strapping Young Lad.. all great stuff but the albums "Heavy as A Really Heavy Thing" and "City" are absolute.
If you wanna explore his albums, his most... "complete" as a whole as far as quality goes and overall enjoyment would probably be "Transcendance". His "Ziltoid the omniscient" is a very unique and interesting concept too but way heavier and weird, then he kinda goes all over the place, it's really hard to recommend one in particular because either he goes more instrumental in albums like "Terria" or "Synchestra" which has a few bangers that I love, either he goes more pop rock with Anneke on a few albums as well (female lead singer), either he goes country with Casualties of cool, either he goes completely bonker and chaotic with Deconstruction or Genesis, ... I'd say Transcendance would be your best first album as far as studio versions go !
