Love the Rime Otter! This is one of the mechs that first got me interested in Clan Ghost Bear and the Rasalhague Dominion. Can't wait until the official model comes out! Also I enjoyed the discussion of Ghost Bear/Rasalhague Dominion history. For the homebrew mercenary force that contains most of the IS models I've painted, the backstory I came up with was that they were founded by former KungsArme' mechwarriors who weren't interested in trialing for positions in the Ghost Bear touman. And regarding the transition from Ghost Bear Dominion to Rasalhague Dominion, most of what I've read about it is actually in coverage of the Second Combine-Dominion War. I don't remember precisely where I read this, so take it with a grain of salt, but I recall the main impetus was reports of widespread atrocities carried out by the Ghost Bear touman during their brutal campaign against the Nova Cats. I am actually interested in how well these two would fare in a battle scenario.
A 55 ton medium mech that can run as fast as a Locust AND has a hatchet? Bringing a big stick and being able to get into bonking range quickly does sound like fun!
That's a cool mech. I wish it weren't an omni, honestly. Either the A or B configs would make for a really useful high-tech Griffon substitute and the C is a badass brawler. The Dominion is such a frustrating subject. They were probably due for a civil war because the society still seems to be in tension. I always wished that the Ghost Bears gave up a lot of the Clan trappings and were absorbed into the Rasalhague culture simply because of the numbers involved. Would be interesting for them to maintain their breeding programs and bloodnames for the warriors, but pretty much abandon the Nicholas-inspired ideology. Maybe the Draconis citizens would sign on to basically become Ghost Bears with time, but those Rasalhague worlds were always going to become the dominant culture and that should justifiably cause the Ghost Bears to shift over time.
We love the otter like a disowned sibling. We know it exsists, but we try to forget it. (This message is sponsored by the Centurion and Hunchback gang.)
"Cool as a cucumber" omfg story time... I used that phrase once at my old workplace speaking to a dementia patient. All the rest of the unit staff heard me say that, and none of them knew it was a real phrase in usage. So everyone thought I was just talking nonsense BS back to the patient lol. Anywho... awesome vid MF. Learned me about a new mech today. Thank you for all your hard work. Have you considered adding another member tier? I would strongly encourage it
The Rime Otter has a neat appearance, like a smaller Grizzly, Kind of similar to how the Mastodon has a similar profile to the Arcas, but much bigger. I also would like to add that Omega Galaxy “The Raging Bears”, are the most based in the CGB touman. I was really hoping the Civil War was more concentrated on the “Freeminders” vs staunch Clan traditionalists than it being what it became, but oh well. Omega Galaxy remains my refuge in a Clan that has taken a serious dive from grace.
I like the Ghost Bears, they seem to me to be the least messed up of the Clans. Their values of history, tradition, and family (however clanners define it) are both their greatest strength and greatest weakness. It's interesting to know that the Ghost Bear Dominion transformed into the Rasalhague Dominion so smoothly and quietly. I guess the Ghost Bears were trying so hard to not step on too many toes that they accidentally tip-toed their way into a new nation. As for the Rime Otter, I like it. It's simple, and I feel like the reinforced structure and speed could make it deceptively tanky. The low-ish pod space also feels like a calculated trade off. You may have less weapons, but you'll be using them for longer. (I'm also very happy the MF config seems to continue this trend, though I'm surprised you didn't add jump jets)
Really great stuff:) I am also surprised/impressed at the Bears stealth moving skills. A very impressive jack of all trades mech. I love that kind of build:) (Btw, would pilot the MF build any day:) 👍
Great video, and nice to see the Rasalhague Dominion's history summarized so well. Definitely on of my favourites from the Rec Guides. Just a heads up, caste is pronounced "cast" because... English is terrible.
I like the idea of a Rasalhague/Ghost Bear cross developed mech to embrace hatchets as armament given both factions have stron viking influence. The MF version is surprising, no Plasma Rifles? You feeling ok today? The ATMs are a nice addition though. And balance well with the laser loadout.
they took the FRR and Ghost Bears, my 2 favorite factions, killed them but combined them, and then made them abandon their values in Dominion Divided. All I have left now is my favorite Periphery state and they dont have much.
@@MechanicalFrog Yah, I am still trying to catch up on everything. Clan Protectorate is also a hot topic I am quite interested in. Another Hypbrid state that is at a very critical point I think. A wild mix of FWL, Spirit Cats and Sea Fox. Torn between following the ilClan or staying with the FWL that hosted them? Quite difficulte.
I really liked Rashalhague, and the idea that there was a Republic in the setting. It was a shame to see it fall to the Clans. The Clans are too weird for me to get behind, but, if I'm being fair, Ghost Bear is the least weird, kinda... As for the Mechs, I wasn't familiar at all with this one, but my issue is that Clan Mechs all seem too "good". The thrill of trade-offs is missing. Yes, they are always out-numbered, but that isn't fun to me. The whole Clan "Thing" struck a sour note for me, I never got hooked, too weird, too unrelatable. Not trying to hate, still a good video, lots of stuff I didn't know. Keep up the good work.
There is actually a tradeoff for Clan tech and mechs. COST. Clan tech is remarkably pricey, both in game and setting context. Forfet the exact numbers, but Tex's old video on the Madcat/Timber Wolf stated you could feild something to the tune of 30 Urbanmechs, or an entire lance of Warhammers for the in universe cost of 1 Madcat base model.
Hello Frog. Love the video. But it does raise a question: 'What became of the outdated Mechs of the Ghost Bears?' No doubts, the writers meant that all those Mechs were scrapped and their resources used to build other Mechs. But, I tend to dis-believe that. The shear work of melting down, rendering all the resources to basic components and then rebuilding would be a massive pain, and take many years of effort, if not decades. It would seem to me that it would have been simpler to sell off the older Mechs to someone like Clan Sea Fox and purchase more resources using that funding. If this is indeed the case, then Mercenaries and others could buy those 'old' Clan Mechs for their own uses. As for the Rime Otter design. It has some utility and use on the battlefield, and I can see a valid use for the design. Especially a couple of the variants of the Rime Otter Mech. Although not mentioned in your video, Some of the designs show real promise as deep penetration raider Mechs, or at least as the command Mech of such a deep penetration force. The C configuration especially. I am surprised that you didn't design the MF variant to include a Plasma Rifle. Shocking, I know.
My Clan solution would be to keep the older mechs in service as garrison units, using them until they cannot function and then finally scrapping them for parts to repair the other existing models until they're all just junk.
@@MechanicalFrog : Yeah, I would agree with you, but the lore states that they just 'did away' with all their older Mechs. So, they must have either sold them all off, or just stripped them for parts. Breaking up the Internal Structures to repair other Mechs. My suggestion would still be 'faster' to accomplish... sell 'em off and build fresh with the funds to bolster your economy and building programs. As a player that is 'loyal' to my origins as a Mercenary Commander, I would love to get my hands on Clan Mechs 'on the cheap'. Even those being 'phased out' of a Clan's forces.
Even after all this time, I'm still not quite sure what "Operation Sneaky Sneak" means XD. Otherwise, another exceptional video and I enjoyed the framing of the Rasalhague and Ghost Bear shared history.
It's a reference from an anime show called Girls Und Panzer. They come up with a crafty plan to defeat their opponents and name the plan, "Operation Sneaky Sneak."
I could see the 'D' configuration being used as the Scout/spotter for heavy Stars and Cluster's. It's better than wasting a point on some useless 40 tonner.
They say humor is subjective, but I say a man named Forester in a mech with an Hatchet is objectively amusing. As is a man named Forester that works for Da Bears! 😃
One of the few MASC equipped mechs I truly like. The C variant is my øksman of choice for implanting an øks into the faceplates of opposing mechs. Hitting the supercharger / MASC for a surprising burst of speed to get into melee unexpectedly can shock and terrify enemies who have never seen this mech before. And the Jump Jets make mobility excellent. Is it wrong I still want to add 3x Myomar to get more effect from the øks? The Prime is useful, and has proven itself deadly for me in the past. I like to leave one back with the fire support units for defending them against lights. Again that speed boost from MASC will ruin a light's day when they think they got away clean after a high speed pass.
5/13 movement profile on the B and 8 LMG? same movement on the C plus a hatchet. D has 8 IJJ. This mech overall goes all in on mobility for most configurations, I love fast medium mechs, and this has "too angry to die" vibes.
While I appreciate the video I would hope that in the future we'd get dedicated videos on the factions instead of them being baked into mech videos. I know that the societies that build mechs are good background and contextualising why they exist, but I think it could be good to see faction videos on their own to make looking up the lore easier for newcomers.
Yeh It's a bit of a sticky thing as mechs are clearly the driving motivation for many to click on a video. I do routinely do videos on planets and other things, but they tend not to perform as well.
@@MechanicalFrog Very much a shame since those are very much my favorite sort of video from you. It is very unique to see such great care and presentation given to sides of the setting that doesn't get as much attention as it deserves. It really sparks the imagination for what sorts of worlds could be hiding out there among the stars after all.
I haven't actually played battletech or really followed it since 2003-04ish. Think I need to find out what the whole Word of Blake kerfuffle thing was about.
loved this video. Not suprised that the ghost bears would figure out that most of us freebirths just want a decent life without much strife, and some respect. Dont gotta like everything about the clans to know if i had to choose one to be occupied by id pick ghost bears every time. Honesty, respect, and not being a prick. good combinayion. as for the mech in question, i like the C config. but gave me a question. surely *any* mech with a hand and actuators strong enough could technically use an axe if ones available? Imagine an Atlas with a hatchet, whooo boy
While I don't have txt to back it up, I would suspect it had to be a combination of life or death and just sheer annoyance that they'd spent years building something up just for a bunch of stravag trash to come and try to wreck it.
Evidence was discovered that linked WoB to Clan Wolverine. That is a berserk button for Clan Ghost Bear. It is also implied that Uncle Chandi planted the evidence.
@@MechanicalFrog yeah pod space is a bit limited. I prefer designs with more options for dakka. First thing I saw with that design was a t-bolt or shootist. So a bodyguard for command and artillery units.
Ahhh yes the newest inductee into the infamous 275 Mafia, welcome, we bring you into the family happily. This is a great example of realistic military development. It is not super fancy, it does not have all the bells and whistles, instead it is based on the tried and true 55/275 combo that is so loved by those of us who have been here for... umm.. right we do not talk age here. Anyone in western washington I am looking to get some non solaris min/max table tops at the local shop. I would just like some good ol fashion stompy stompy ... no super tech no super toys
CLPLs are absolutely evil. If the clans had just used Rifleman IICs only, they would have rolled the entire inner sphere XD A Star of Rifleman IICs can deal with anything ranging from fast scout lances to massive 100 ton juggernauts only assault lances no problem thanks to the absolutely broken TC+4 CLPLs combo. The rime otter thankfully is not as broken as that but its still quite the killer of anything its own or of lower weightclass. It makes a great bodyguard against fast flanking mechs while having its LRM 10 to fire along with the mechs it guards. It also works very well in any role a medium lance will find itselfe in
Those child miners are so adorable in their little overalls and their fingers are really good for getting the small bits of plasma out of the mining machines.

Structure/Armor: Internal: 91 (Endo-Steel) Armor: 172/185 (Ferro-Fibrous)
Weapons:
Rotary AC/20 (Clan) in the RT 6 tons of ammo in the LT 30 shots
4x Heavy Med Lasers two in the LA and RA
Equipment:
Clan MASC in the CT
An incredibly hard-hitting build, though due to the lack of range, the MASC installed in the CT will help it get into range quickly. I am actually interested in how well these two would fare in a battle scenario.
mmm love Otters, so cute so cuddly till you get them mad.
Yeah, don't make them mad. That's a bad plan.
I like the video, especially that we get general/historic info as well as info on the Mech! 👍
Glad you enjoyed!
Great video! Looking forward to more.
More to come!
A 55 ton medium mech that can run as fast as a Locust AND has a hatchet? Bringing a big stick and being able to get into bonking range quickly does sound like fun!
What could go wrong?! :D
This is a solid argument.
We love the otter like a disowned sibling.
We know it exsists, but we try to forget it.
(This message is sponsored by the Centurion and Hunchback gang.)
Hah!
I'm not a Clanner... But if I were, seems like I might be a Ghost Bear.
A comparatively good place to be.
Because we can BEARly contain our enthusiasm for something both deadly and as cute as an Otter!
Also, it’s a 55 ton Warhammer, which is cool!
I would strongly encourage it
One of my favorite phrases... :D
Not a bad idea. I've gone ahead and put the new tier into the system. We'll see if there is any interest.
Nice mech tough, fast ,cool and a pair of arguable the best weapon in BT. I would totally run a med star of these and be happy
The Space Teddy Bears are the best. Just don't ask them to vote on anything, things tend to get very complicated when that happens.
Is it weird that this feels more like an Ice Hellion machine than a Ghost Bear one? Not that I’m complaining.
It would probably fit well in either Touman.
DECAF BLEND?! Honor demands satisfaction! To the circle of equals!
Augmented or un-augmented?
@@MechanicalFrog *Caffeinated.*
The C config was aptly named. Honestly just call it the Crime Otter 😂
We love the Rime Otter because the Touman rejected the idea of calling it the Hip Hopopotamus
House rule on the name incoming...
What's the difference between an "incident" and a "kerfuffle"? Why couldn't Tukkayid also be a kerfuffle?
Because saying Tukayyid doesn't make TH-cam angry at me.
@@MechanicalFrog Darn r@cist YT.
Really great stuff:) I am also surprised/impressed at the Bears stealth moving skills. A very impressive jack of all trades mech. I love that kind of build:)
(Btw, would pilot the MF build any day:) 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
We all need a CGL Rime Otter.
Truth.
I really love the Grizzly and now the Rime Otter, outstanding. I really wish it kept at least one or both hands (my only critique).
Fair critique.
Great video, and nice to see the Rasalhague Dominion's history summarized so well. Definitely on of my favourites from the Rec Guides. Just a heads up, caste is pronounced "cast" because... English is terrible.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Can't do Plasma every time. :P
@@MechanicalFrog Did you donate yours today? XD
I should...
Not sure if I love this mech, but I've never used it so I'm gonna have to give it a whirl and find out. 👍
Please do!
they took the FRR and Ghost Bears, my 2 favorite factions, killed them but combined them, and then made them abandon their values in Dominion Divided. All I have left now is my favorite Periphery state and they dont have much.
About successfull Clan-IS hybrid states. What about the Scorpian Empire? While problematic at start I thought they also worked it out.
We'll see on the Scorpion Empire. I hope we get more info on them soon.
The Rasalhague Dominion is one of the few democracies in the setting.
But it does raise a question: 'What became of the outdated Mechs of the Ghost Bears?'
No doubts, the writers meant that all those Mechs were scrapped and their resources used to build other Mechs.
The Dominion went all in on the Republic's disarmament program.
@@MechanicalFrog Ah, I completely forgot about that! XD
"Forester" is a Ghost Bear bloodname. He is trueblood and a traditionalist, so no desire for melee combat.
@@jellico1238 The enemy is usually trying hard to deny you the combat you desire.
While I do like having a Hatchet, I'd go with Claws instead. Gotta look the part.
Fair enough.
Thanks
The cockpit windows kinda look like a face, when combined with the "grill" underneath
It's just a happy otter.
I want to try it very much.
I pronounced it Rash-o-log for the longest time.
My favorite thing about doing my videos is getting my pronunciation corrected.
Could you do something on the Goliath Scorpion to Scorpion Empire transition. Seems wild.
I will very likely do so.
Done dirty is an understatement.
Aff
An insult to Otters everywhere , wheres the cuteness
:O
I love otters! If only there others named after the raccoon, kangaroo, squirrel and such
There is a dearth of amphibian-themed mechs.
Loved this video. Very cool hearing the history that led up to this design. Made me really love the RD!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I haven't actually played battletech or really followed it since 2003-04ish. Think I need to find out what the whole Word of Blake kerfuffle thing was about.
It was a silly time...
@MechanicalFrog I'm waiting patiently for Sven to get there, just a few succession wars, a clan invasion, and the Fedcom civil war..
Neat new stompy boys
loved this video.
Wait a minute, the MF version didn't have three plasma rifles on it 🙂?
Shocked and appalled.
Why do the Ghost Bears go after the WoB with such vengeance? Did the Blakeists make a catastrophic attack on a Ghost Bear possession?
While I don't have txt to back it up, I would suspect it had to be a combination of life or death and just sheer annoyance that they'd spent years building something up just for a bunch of stravag trash to come and try to wreck it.
Evidence was discovered that linked WoB to Clan Wolverine. That is a berserk button for Clan Ghost Bear. It is also implied that Uncle Chandi planted the evidence.
@@jellico1238 Uncle Chandi was a fine upstanding Kurita 😎.
@@MechanicalFrog 🤘 just noticed your answer 🙂.
way to expensive, but I like this design.
Yeh when it comes to Clan stuff... price is fun.
@@MechanicalFrog yeah pod space is a bit limited. I prefer designs with more options for dakka. First thing I saw with that design was a t-bolt or shootist. So a bodyguard for command and artillery units.
(Almost precisely 50% of the way into the video) "...today's main topic..." 😂
**Shrug** :D
Never heard of it. But good video!
Thank you!
What no plasma rifles .......😂 u startin to slip mech 🐸 😅😅😅
Gotta keep you guessing.
It also works very well in any role a medium lance will find itselfe in
If you see one being used by pirates, is it a Crime Otter?
Yes.
Woah, no plasma or a comfort small head laser on the MF variant? Is there a shortage of these systems?
I can't do it every time or you will get bored.
@@MechanicalFrog Nonsense, someone has to keep the plasma miners employed
Those child miners are so adorable in their little overalls and their fingers are really good for getting the small bits of plasma out of the mining machines.
Why 3 tons LBX ammo not get CASE-II while half of mg ammo get that....😂
Shouldn't it be the other way around?
The ammo for the LB-10X is in the arm. Can't CASE II an arm. Just body locations.
Rime Otter? Man, Catalyst is starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel of names.
I think it should have been Rhine Otter.
