The Italians were successful with frogmen and mini subs. When the Japanese attacked the British Navy, the British could not muster adequate naval reinforcements. Many of the ships the British high command wanted in the Pacific were sunk or put out of action in the Mediterranean by Italian frogmen and torpedo planes.

“This revisionist history convincingly argues that the Regia Marina Italiana (the Royal Italian Navy) has been neglected and maligned in assessments of its contributions to the Axis effort in World War II. After all, Italy was the major Axis player in the Mediterranean, and it was the Italian navy and air force, with only sporadic help from their German ally, that stymied the British navy and air force for most of the thirty-nine months that Italy was a belligerent. It was the Royal Italian Navy that provided the many convoys that kept the Axis war effort in Africa alive by repeatedly braving attack by aircraft, submarine, and surface vessels. If doomed by its own technical weaknesses and Ultra (the top-secret British decoding device), the Italian navy still fought a tenacious and gallant war; and if it did not win that war, it avoided defeat for thirty-nine, long, frustrating months.”

Oh indeed, and there's a reason why certain Italian ships were taken into post-war service by several nations besides Italy itself. They served for several decades afterwards in fact, a credit to their skillful construction and design. Even now, Italian shipyards turn out fine vessels for many nations besides their own, a testament to a long and rich tradition.

The Italian battleships are very beautiful outside and inside. The interior of the turret and it's machinery looks as shiny as a polished roman shield. The 15 in Guns of littorio class have same muzzle velocity as the 18 in guns on Yamato. Which is why they have similar range, Yamato has a little more tho.

That inicial high speed velocity was requested by Regia Marina specifically to increase range but our the full 35 kilometers was never hit . And moreover it created quite a bad side effect as being a terrible shell dispersion

I hate how underrated the Regia Marina is. They had some amazing ships, the Zara-class (my personal favorites) were considered one of the best cruisers in the world alongside the Littorio-class fast battleships. They were just bogged down by lack of fuel and lack of cooperation with the Air Force

"The Royal Italian Navy (Regia Marina) of World War II had capable professional officers, gallant sailors, and beautiful fast ships designed by gifted engineers. What it didn’t have was petroleum, and that was fatal. As British Foreign Secretary Lord Curzon observed at the end of World War I, the Allies “floated to victory on a sea of oil.”
Nevertheless, for 39 months, the Italian navy took many hard knocks and dished out a few to the vaunted British Royal Navy, fighting not only on the Mediterranean, but also in the Red Sea, the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean, and even on Russia’s distant Lake Ladoga.”

My dad was in Naples as a teenager, and would later serve in North Africa, el Alamein and el Guettar...he recalled that after dinner, the navy band would play this march as they paraded through the main streets of the city...sailors from all over would then join them on the way back to their ships....an effective way to collect the personnel previously spread all over town....

The Regia Marina perhaps was the most powerful Italian military branch at this point. And at least in terms of a surface fleet more powerful than the Kreigsmarine. Of course the Germans had the submarine fleet to compensate of course. And for a regional fleet instead of a empire spanning one a pretty good one.

“A popular impression in the United States of the Regia Marina, the Italian Navy, during World War II is that because its powerful surface fleet spent so much time in port, it was more effective as a fleet in being - in other words, for what it could do - than for what it actually did. As with all generalities, there are exceptions, and in this case that exception was its Decima Flottiglia MAS (10th Light Flotilla), one of the most effective units in the history of special operations.”

But after the invasion of ethiopia (nazi germany secretely supported and supplied ethiopia btw) the relationship between france, uk and italy deteriorated, italy was isolated and this forced her to get more intimate with germany, then it became apparent that italy needed to fight against france and the uk to secure her supremacy over the mediterrean and expand its colonial empire, but who else was willing to fight france and the uk?
