The Calif. Zephyr #5 in Ft. Morgan on 09AUG2024

- In a preview of days to come, the California Zephyr arrived in Fort Morgan at 0601 MDT (16min. off). Powering the 8-car train were P42s #45 & #170. The consist was stopped with car 7 to the parking area platform for 1 off and 1 on. Meanwhile, off camera, the supervisor boarded car 2 for the ride back to Denver. He will return on tonight's #6 Zephyr to reclaim the Gvt. vehicle he is driving.
With the station work safely completed, the high ball was given and on a clear signal at west Ft. Morgan CP, the Zephyr rolled west toward its net stop at Union Station in Denver.
My thanks to the operating crew for the greetings, and the dining car staff for the greeting as well.

Hi, Mike! I have been watching your morning arrival of the Zephyr for almost a year now, but first time commenting. This is so much better than the news one gets day after day, filled with negativism. It makes a much better start to the day. From El Paso, TX, Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle.

This is a highlight of my day and I enjoy seeing the Zephyr. I am fortunate to dwell in a community serviced by a passenger train and have found there is a wide range of folks who also seem to enjoy it as well.

Good Friday morning Mike! It’s a beautiful morning here even! 59 degrees and sunny only supposed to be 74 degrees out here today! It felt almost cool early this morning! That is the AMTRAK supervisor whose office is in Denver. He is required to do that with his road crews. Some even ride to McCook, NE and back. Performance reports and all.
I think he is enjoying this weather as much as I am. I have chatted with him in the past.

Good morning, David; Thanks for dialing in as well as the comments. No rain out here. Just a light mist from time to time. Dave Fraser and his most trusted forecast missed by several miles out here. All the rain is along the northern border with Nebraska getting the majority. Oh well. I will take the change in the temperatures though. Makes for great sleeping.

Good morning, Jim; I thank you for dropping by along with the comments. It is almost dark enough here for the streetlights to be on. That is at 1000 local. I am enjoying the much cooler temperatures. Almost put a long sleeve shirt on with a hoodie this morning. That just didn't seem right for August in Fort Morgan. LOL! It would be wonderful for some real rain to set in for a day with the nice soaker rainfall. Got rooked out of that.
Nice to read that most of the rain back there has ended. Maybe the floodwaters will ebb now.

Good morning Mike - thanks for your daily updates on the Calif.Zephyr - as always much appreciated. I always feel that whilst you provide a great service for us very appreciative viewers, I note that you are mostly on your own. This was compounded by the fact that today I noticed that the young man who walked toward you, didn't appear to be a passenger but seemed to be wandering around at that time of the morning for no particular reason. I'm sure I got the 'wrong end of the stick' but please be careful. I personally have had some bad similar experiences but given your ex-military I'm sure you are fully capable;e of handling any situation. Just be safe!
Good morning, Dennis; I thank you for looking in as well as the comments. Yep. I didn't have a comfortable feeling about the young man. Saw him later as he walked by the coffee shop I frequent. I don't go into the depot, but I am aware that he did after the train departed. I do appreciate your words. I have a shirt with an adage on "I may be old and can't run fast but I hold a DD-214 and can still shoot pretty straight". That holds true. The urban environments have reached into rural America. Sadly, in this permissive socialist state, he has more rights than I do.

Good morning Mike. Here we are 9 days into August. Year is moving fast. Going to be a cool day in Albuquerque. High of 90 according to the weather forecast. Sure tell the days are getting shorter. I am happy to read that you are getting some coolness down there. We will climb back into the 70s and low 80s over the weekend. Still no rain here. The best we can get is a mist that is on and off.
Good luck with the transfer of the pictures and all. That is the fun part from what I remember from the last time I did that.

Good morning, Ben; Thank you for stopping by along with the comments and question. Our sky is still very overcast here. keeps looking like it could start to rain at any time. But the rain has gone around us. Oh well. The temperatures are fantastic!
Both coaches were standard coaches and not combination coach/baggage with standard as has been the normal for some time. There is also a coach that has been refitted to meet ADA standards that runs thru here once in a while. It appeared that both of the coaches had near capacity passenger loading. That keeps up and another coach may be added for the overflow.

Yeah good morning Mike I guess the temperature is not going to be very hot out there today. I'm sure you like that. The highest 66 out there today. Yeah we're getting cooler stuff here now like maybe middle 70s? So I'm not going to complain about that. You know it's cooler by the lake warmer in land farther west. I'm probably about a couple of miles west of the lake so I still get some of that residual. Anyway look just like another routine day out there and fmg. Have a great day out there. Stay safe.

Good morning, Cheryl; Thank you for tuning in along with the comments. No rain here. Just mist from time to time. Rain north of here but we were shorted again. Almost time to start chopping corn for silage here. The farmers and feeders are biting at the bit as it were.
It was nice to pick up the horn music from the east this morning. Sadly, the wind was carrying the sound away as they departed. Oh well. There were some birds at it and a rooster today.
I hope the rain doesn't wash everything out and away down there. But I do hope that you get a good soaker rain.
