To clarify, I DID consider using bogies! But the base of the model would have to be rebuilt. I stuck with this instead as it would look much taller and less faithful to the original design otherwise. Love the lining, the cuts replicate the pixel look so well! You did a fantastic job with this, and as noted in the video it genuinely was very satisfying seeing it run! I also appreciate you showing the “bloopers” while filming, its adds an authenticity to it!
Thanks so much! Glad the details are appreciated :) I'm glad the satisfactions carries through Haha, I'm glad. I try to make my videos as authentic as I can, including mistakes, because that's how we learn!
SUCH a smart and beautifully executed idea my brother; this video has me reinstalling Pocket Trains after years of forgetting all about it- 😅 Seeing it motorized was beyond a treat too. You never disappoint big dawg 💪❤️🔥
That’s so sweet! If you used a technic axel for the wheels you could have some of them able to slide side to side so you don’t have to remove the wheels.
Since TH-cam recommended me this, I really love the build of the Cherry Steamer. I used to have it in Pocket Trains as I'm playing it, although I did replace it with diesel locomotives.
I feel like that hole in the train motor between the two wheels should be a full technic connection. It would be so useful. I've been wanting to make a Boco, I could just have a motor at one end but I would prefer two.
I love how you are able to use the dark red pieces for the Cherry steamer I wish Lego could have used dark red pieces for their recent Hogwarts Express models. I wonder why the Lego Hogwarts Express is a bright red instead of the more accurate dark red?
Yeah, I think so too! I can only speculate that it's between there being more pieces available in red and perhaps them wanting it to appear more bright and toy-like
Larry if childhood you was watching this he would be so proud and just to ask you this are you planning on making more of the pocket trains engines in small scale or large scale as well as the Rolling Stock??
LEGO really need to add a small blind driver wheel like they have for larger train wheels. Ideally with an easy means of pinning them into the Powered Up motor bogies as well.
I have built two locos plus rollingstock in narrow gauge, though the locos (a small red diesel and slightly larger yellow steamer) and carriages (box car, gondola and open passenger cars) are built 7ish studs wide (six studs, plus half to 2/3 stud either side made up of greebling and detailing). They replicate the trains - or tramways - still found in Queensland running on 2’ (610mm) gauge in many districts which cart sugar cane to the mill. They were popular in many amusement and theme parks in Australia, but now only at Dreamworld. Mine are motorised using third party Circuit Cube motors.
I remember playing Pocket Trains years ago. It's one of those slow grind kind of games. Fun but I quickly got bored with it. Awesome thought seeing someone building the steam trains from the game. 😊😊
I've been wanting to build a steam-outline locomotive in 7 1/4" Gauge for a while but I have had touble finding the right locomotive to replicate. I think I found it!
"making a model from only 1 asset is quite a fun challange" oh boy do i know that feeling. years ago i attempted to make a space ship inspired by a piece of art out of a gaming campaign book. wish i had have succeeded like you did here
Idea: for the center 2 axles on theclarge steamer, use a technic axle & wheels, but with the bricks that hold it on in the center, with 2 studs of room. So instead of this: ▪️🔳▪️▪️🔳▪️ Its this: ▪️▪️🔳🔳▪️▪️ (Note: small black squares are each 1 stud of empty space, the white & black squares are the bricks with technic holes) If this makes no sense, sorry
Even in the real world, locomotives with more than 2 inline axles have to deal with the issue of turns. They usually do this either by having no flange on some wheels, or by letting the entire axle slide left and right by a small amount.
I have a idea how you can have the loco have all wheel sets in Since the Cherry Steamer is a 4-4-0 meaning it has 4 lead wheels and 4 driving wheels and 0 Trailing wheels it would be a good idea to use a small pice that pivots to connect the leading wheels with underneath the loco, I also recommend you do the same on the tender and add a few coaches or freight cars and make one of them powered instead
One thing that could help the large scale version make turns is (somehow) making the front two wheels a rotating bogie of sorts? Would make it easier for it to make smaller turns Other than that, both models look amazing! :))
A number of real locomotives had a few flange-less wheels (wheels without a lip to keep them between the rails) help them go around sharper curves- unfortunately Lego only offers this sort of wheel for their large, technic axle steam locomotive wheel. It's been a long time since I built anything, but I remember it being a challenge to come up with wheel arrangements that worked on Lego's sharp curves, while representing what I wanted to create.
2:42 I found it unreasonably funny how you used a loco-drive example when referring to Hornby’s tender drives, that model dates back to the late 1960s, tooled up by Triang with one of their motors in the locomotive, it wasn’t until the 1970s with their 9F model that pancake motor tender drives caught on for bigger locomotives
The tender looks amazing with the engine and a pretty accurate Livery for the cherry train ( I like to call it the cherry train :> ) I remember when I used to play pocket trains , well you did a pretty good.. no let me rephrase that AMAZING job making the tender and the big scale cherry train :)
6:28 dang you beat me to it. seriously i love how it turned out. that gold lining is gorgeous. thought id tell ya i'm working on a small scale version of Gordon. never knew wheels would be such a pain.
Haha! I can't take full credit, my chat came up with that when I streamed the trains :P Ooh lovely! Good luck with that, and feel free to show me if you make any progress and would like to!
Lego 12v and 4.5 v trains had a max of 3 axles for the turns, for larger locomotives they had a central motor or dummy brick built motor (yellow diesel set) then 1 pivoting axel on each side. You could experiment with this and you wouldn't loose any wheels in the engine as well you could add the PF receiver in the boiler like the winter holiday train. These are just suggestions, I'm experimenting with small steam locomotives to. Best of luck
your issue with the curves on this model reminds me of some trouble an actual tourist railway had when they burrowed a steam engine from herritage where they had to redo a curve so it could get around. some lego curves seem stupidly tight so don't feel too bad
This is a really awesome build! I remember watching the video of your miniature version ages ago and thought it was awesome since it was a train I'd surprisingly never seen someone make in lego before, despite it having "introductory" moc model potential. I actually really want to build one too now lol Do you think you might cover other locomotives from the game such as the diesel, zepher(?) and big steamers? It feels like a really fun challenge to try and make some of the other engines from each set including some of the special ones such as the Century Limited, Daylight etc.
Thanks so much! Nice to see a returning viewer from the last one :) Go for it! Give your own one a go I have seen other people make amazing builds of other Pocket Trains things, and I did a quick digital Freighter build here, though I don't have plans to make more. Might come back to it though! And try more small-scale stuff, this large one is more of a one-off :)
Mount the engine's bogies on swivels. My first "Iron Titan" engine (really a boiler with two motor bogies slapped on) could snake around standard Lego corners like nothing. However, if you want to keep the rigid mounting, try larger radius TrixBrix curves. My current Iron Titan (still under construction as of posting this) can negotiate as tight as 56-stud radius.
You know, these steam engines in the game are based off the Caledonian Railway 264/611 Pug class 0-4-0st. And even funnier yet, some of the real CR pugs actually had little coal tenders like they do in the game. Crazy huh?
@@LarrysLego Yeah I know. It's a shame that none of the 264s were preserved tho. But, at least we still have one North British Railway G class No.42 which looks sort of like them.
Another way to solve the wheel problem could be to use individual wheels attached on a 6 stud long technic pin, with 2 1x2 technic bricks in the middle of the base, allowing the wheels to slide side-to-side. It won't look as good off-track on a shelf, but should allow the engine to stay on corners without removing the front wheels. The same could be done with the tender, replacing the set of wheels closest to the engine with this same design. I'll edit this comment with a link to a graphic version of the design when I've got to time if anyone is interested.
