    Thank you ladies ❤️. I'm eternity grateful for your comments. There are very many people that don't know us. I visited PR right before Maria, I have been in the states since 1980 and avoided going back. Well expectations high and boy was I rewarded. I was treated like family everywhere I went. I grew up in New York join the military and my adventure started. Lived in Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, Montana, Texas, Florida, and last California. My son a former naval officer brought his company from San Diego, California, and never looked back. I am here now and never go back. Thanks, guys for seeing the island from a positive perspective. I am born and raise in the island, Ponce to be more specific. I've been living in the U.S. mainland for the last 22 years of my life because of my career and economic reasons that I was experiencing when I moved. My family never moved from the island and now I am feeling that they are the lucky ones for making the decision to never leave. I reached the point that I feel currently ready to get back. I hope that within a year or two I can move back permanently. I love this video because it makes the fire in me burn more intensely about moving back. Thanks for posting. So, you're looking for gentrification of the island? Meanwhile, the natives are displaced to Alaska, Minnesota. Yesssssss! The next Hawaii - here we come! Tropical hipsters are more than welcomed!
      If PR was independent, this wouldn't be the case and possibly on a large scale. Let's be real: the reason why gentrification is terrible is, because natives put in the hard work without being handsomely compensated, while outsiders come in and take advantage of their privilege. It's everyday life for some, while an adventure for others. 🤷🏽‍♂️
      Sadly, this is going back to the Columbus days.
      P.S. Someone please educate me as to how I'm wrong? I guess it's not about being right or wrong, but about making the most of what you have? Life is not fair. Oh well...boohoo.

I am born and raised in PR, but have lived in US and Europe so I also have enough elements to compare. It is sad that many locals aren't as positive as you are, but I attribute it to a lack of knowledge of how the rest of the world is, there is no perfect place, I have been to all the 78 towns, but still have many thing to see, like Desecheo and Caja de Muerto islands, a couple of canyons, waterfalls, beaches and caves, etc.. Hi Jen... I’ve been living in PR going on 6 yrs. Love it. I bought a home not too far from you, In a small private gated community, still safe, but I wanted to be free from all the restrictions that come with living in a resort community. I live less than 10 mins from Palmas where I just visit the restaurants and also walk the trails. I had to adjust to island life, but it’s easy when I have a pool and the beach is 15 mins away to cool off. The hammock is my best friend. Good content. See you around neighbor 😄

    Thank you ladies for all the kind words towards Puerto Ricans. You perfectly described why I want to live on the island. I unfortunately had to leave, like many others and have been living in TX for about 13 yrs (waaay more than I could’ve imagined), but I plan on moving to the island hopefully soon and being able to live the life I dream of. It makes me happy that other people feel like that about our island. I really hope you continue to have great experiences and never feel the need to leave.

    Here's wishing you a happy recovery -minus one margarita (I'll drink one in your honor). I grew up in Puerto Rico and the practice of not providing pillows and blankets is not uncommon, but the norm according to many relatives who had hospital stays. When I had surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, I was provided with all the comforts. But when I got the bill I realized that even that one single aspirin I was offered for a light headache cost $30 ! So I can only imagine what they charged was for the pillow and blanket alone. Their is a logic to everything. Anyway, please take care and best wishes, your fan -j

    So, I’m simply speculating, as I don’t live on the island. As far as the food markets go, I think they’re less prevalent in general because most people grow their own food in their backyards, so there’s no need for it. My dad was born and raised in the island, in Patillas, where they sourced their food from their land (yams, plantains, avocados, bananas, yucca, papaya, herbs, etc). My mom is from New York City where they would depend more so on farmer’s markets to find that kind of produce, which is the only reason I say this because I have to different perspectives to compare. My dad even has his own “finquita” (small farm) here in our backyard, which is a great advantage. Again, I’m just speculating. I may be wrong, but that might be a factor!

    • @JenThereDoneThat
      @JenThereDoneThat  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point, many people (outside the large cities) have little gardens and fincas. I have a mango tree and bananas in my back garden and am trying to grow more veggies.

Soon look to retire and spend winters in Puerto Rico and summers in the north east USA mainland. I feel that I can go to work for at least three years if I can make it. I am 67 now. And very pissed off at myself for not waking up in time to consider to move to the Island as my brother told me to do. He lives there in San Sebastian. All of that money that I am going to make will be saved. So, that I can go to the Island and buy a house there. Even if I drop dead within a month of doing it. But for me, it will be worthy. The agriculture thing you are right, farmer's market's or plaza del mercado are not the best but you can see a lot of farmer's sale their goods in their own pick-up trucks. The first time I see someone driving around announcing their goods it blow my mind (im talking to my neighbor and I heard this noise and my neighbor told me stop the truck while I look for money and I was like "what is she talking about" when I realize what she mean. This old man have doughnuts, plantains, pumpkins, recao and some other things I didn't have a clue what they were, display in the back of the truck . She explained to me that all of those things is what he harvest and he sales like This, including the doughnuts that are home made, btw are delicious. But if you live in a gated community probably haven't see this I dont think they let them get in.😕I think.

    The thing of why there are better beaches in the West and South its because Puerto Rico is divided by two Oceans, the Atlantic and the Caribbean, the Ocean in the North is the Atlantic more rough and dangerous, and mid West and South is the Caribbean Ocean. Many dont know that Puerto Rico is in the middle of two Oceans and people think its all Caribbean. Well that is the info of the Oceans here and advise that North side its only good in good weather.

    • @JenThereDoneThat
      @JenThereDoneThat  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And the depth of the water. Palmas del Mar is on the Caribbean Sea, but the water is very deep and rough, a few miles north along the coast (also the Caribbean Sea) is much calmer.
