I loved Saltburn for reasons I can’t seem to articulate sometimes. I felt that acting was top notch. I never thought of it as having some higher meaning when I was watching it. I felt like Oliver was more of a scorned lover by the end. That Felix had betrayed him by revealing all of his lies, and that added hurt of hearing how his friends spoke of him at school, that he had other people there every year, the outlandish privilege on display, and finally his sister seeing right through him were the catalysts to murder. It all backed Oliver into a corner, and then all of the horrible parts of his personality and neediness was on display. I also did not feel he wanted to take over Saltburn until the end when again….he was an angry animal backed into a corner. I think it began with an obsession for Felix that just took a very very wrong turn.
I agree with you, it’s a fun romp, but nothing more. It’s at its best when it’s just the characters being posh and bratty, but all the shock is for nothing. The twists are all very easy to see coming, and I feel like Fennell couldn’t even commit to Oliver actually being obsessed with Felix or it just being a class commentary.
So pleased to discover your channel via this review - superb analysis. Even though I enjoyed the film well enough as I had gone in with fairly low expectations, the dissatisfying aspects of the film started niggling me more and more and you articulate it all so well. The narrative and themes are so jumbled - I wonder if Fennell was just bursting with ideas & influences that she wanted to use that we ended up with a patchwork rather than something solidly held together with a strong story. I've heard her say that this is about obsessive first love - but that didn't come over at all! I agree that the Oliver character was underwritten. From a surface perspective it seems like he's a wolf in sheep's clothing but I don't really think he ever was a sheep - though it would be easy to assume so due his overall reticence - I too thought that he told a false story about his background to evoke pity but my friend suggested, it would also boost his image in a way - in that his achievements in getting to Oxford would be even more impressive if he'd had a turbulent family background. Hadn't thought of that but it would fit with his character, I think. I would definitely like to see Fennell direct a screenplay written by someone else in the future. I gave it a C.
I just discovered your channel a few weeks ago when looking for "anatomy of a fall" reviews and I'm so happy I did! I really enjoy your analyses and you articulate the points so well while being super entertaining. Thanks so much for your work - I really love it!
Saltburn could be seen as a Machiavellian tale of how self-serving neoliberalism enchants and then ruthlessly takes over the traditional conservative right. But at the same time it's also a vampire movie, isn't it?
Great chat about the movie and impressive camera setup on your channel!
The Talented Mr. Ripley for a newer generation imo
Great review!

3-camera setup and now a pair of Shure MV7s and upgraded lighting rig? lol
We’re ready to take it up a notch 😂
