What makes Luka Modric special is his well rounded ability and all of the tools that he has in his locker has made him such a phenomenal midfielder. He’s more of a deep lying playmaker a box to box midfielder and a number 8. The guy is an expert at controlling the pace and tempo of games, he’s a very good ball passer with the amount of chances he creates whether it’s from deep and in the advanced positions of the field, he can pull out a trivela pass out of nowhere and this is his signature pass that we’ve seen him do time and time again and he’s also an engine with a ridiculous work rate. He’s another one of those players who have to be closely watched during a game in order for people to truly appreciate their value and how good they are because whenever he plays he has so much influence in the game it’s very unparalleled to find so many ways to be a difference maker during games and it’s not like he has some of the most dominant statistics I’ve ever seen as he doesn’t need to be a goalscoring midfielder like Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard, he’s an attacking and defensive midfielder combined.
He did start his career off as a number 10, a traditional playmaker, but as we all know, that role doesn’t exist in football anymore. Luka Modric has had to redefine his game just to cope with the demands and tactical changes of modern football and this has helped him become one of the greatest midfielders we’ve ever seen because not only does he have a very unique skillset on the ball with a range of short and long passes, he’s willing to do some defensive work from here and there and that’s an aspect of his game that isn’t always talked about and his profile is exactly what managers want from players in modern football. Marcelo Bielsa recently said a player who attacks like a 10 and defends like a 6, he calls it the Modric the number 8 role and players like him that were attacking midfielders had to evolve and that’s another special thing about his career. Most of the success that he’s had in his career has been at Real Madrid, with the Croatia national team he has been their best player the face of the team in major tournaments where they’ve exceeded expectations in recent World Cups. He peaked later in his career I get that, but for athletes it’s so difficult to maintain your high level of performances in your late 30s, even if this season hasn’t been vintage Modric he’s a perfect professional in a sense that despite his playing time being limited because of the emergence of Jude Bellingham and the other young midfielders on Real Madrid, he’s accepted his role as a squad player as has continued to look like a class act on the field whether he comes off the bench or gets a rare start. He’s one of the best players I’ve ever seen and Luka Modric absolutely deserves to be in the same sentence as Xavi Andres Iniesta and Zinedine Zidane and you know how good you have to be when you’re in the same conversation as these midfield greats. Most of the success that he’s had in his career has been at Real Madrid, with the Croatia national team he has been their best player the face of the team in major tournaments where they’ve exceeded expectations in recent World Cups.

I am from Croatia, I am 38 years old...So i even remember when He started playing for Dinamo(I am from Zagreb, and Dinamo is in our blood)! every one knew that he is the man who give his all and more on top of that, since his position in field aquare great strainght and a lot of runing...no ove expected him to play same position, or at any position fo so long, even with his 38 years old. I beleive that he is humble guy, with golden hart and a nice soul...he is honestly humble just like he was in old days. Sometime I feeel like he is reading his tim members mind...he will create oportunity to his team to get a goal, and be on the cover of some magazines, even he could get same score alone. that is a value of that kind of person, live for the tim and not for his glory-no mather what! I hope that he will be able to play at least few years from now in same place and indurance like a someone with 25 years old. Someone had too show junger players that with talent and speed, and playing for the team can be posible. now he had great reflexes,a big kwnolege, and on top of that crazzy speed and indurance. that kinde of players in same club can win enything!! A lot of players some of them has rough beginnings to their childhood yet Luka Modric went from dealing with war in Croatia to now being one of the best midfielders of all time.
He’s had such a very successful career and it wasn’t always easy as he was a good player on Tottenham, initially there were doubts about whether he could play in the Premier League and a string of brilliant performances silenced those critics. In his debut season at Real Madrid, he took a lot of time to settle on a star studded team and after he was voted as the worst signing in La Liga history, as they say the rest is history. Under Carlo Ancelotti then Zinedine Zidane, he was an integral part of why Real Madrid won 4 champions league titles in 5 seasons and won a 3peat of UCL titles from 2016-2018 and along with Toni Kroos and Casemiro, formed an excellent midfield trio that helped the team control games and win the midfield battles. Cristiano Ronaldo got all the headlines for his goals which was understandable, but Luka Modric played an equally important role to Real Madrid’s European success as well and without him they don’t win those UCL titles. Even in 2022, despite being 36, he was very critical in helping Real Madrid win another champions league title. He didn’t have success at just club level, for the Croatia national team, he took them to a World Cup final in 2018 and got them to the semifinals in 2022 and to do that on Croatia out of all countries is phenomenal and you wonder why he won the Golden Ball in 2018 and the Bronze Ball in 2022. His Ballon dor win in 2018 was controversial and a lot of people believe that he shouldn’t have won, the only significant thing I would say about Luka Modric winning the Ballon dor is that it ended the 10 year streak of Messi and Ronaldo and it’s true without voters fatigue he wouldn’t have won, in an era where attackers get all the recognition for their goals, even if he shouldn’t have won, it just shows that you don’t always need to have the most goals and assists to be the best player in the world and win these individual accolades. It was good for him that he has a Ballon Dor to his name. Modric has also shown that age is just a number for him and the fact that at 38 he’s still playing at this level and has been playing at an elite level in his 30s it’s simply just greatness from him and he’s been one of the most consistent players in the last decade and has shown that he isn’t a one season wonder when he has gotten better and better with age. During his time at Real Madrid and what he has done on the Croatia national team, he always has his best performances in the big games champions league World Cup etc, produces on the big stage and delivers in high profile moments like his 2 assists in 2 separate champions league finals against Atletico Madrid in 2014 and Juventus in 2017, his masterclass in the 2018 final against Liverpool, his display against England in the semifinals in 2018, who can forget about that sublime assist in the champions league quarterfinals against Chelsea in 2022 as he was dominating the midfield against some of the best teams in Europe on the biggest of stages. He wouldn’t be the player that he is today had he not faced so many challenges in his childhood and his career.

Both ended in Dinamo which is greatest club in Croatia and powerhouse in producing players and both became legends. Boban at his own right as legend of Milan and Luka as general overall legend that is active player and one of greatest players in history of sport.

Hey mate, really good and objective analysis. Have to disagree; however, regarding the ballon d'or. He won the Club World Cup and was voted best player of the tournament, He came 2nd in the World Cup with a Croatia team who were nowhere near favourites and won player of the tournament. Won UCL and voted best midfielder. Goalscoring stats aren't enough to be voted the best player. It's difficult to gauge how much a player positively and negatively influences a game and an overall season, but I think he had the overall least negative and most positive influence of all players on his teams in that year. It would be interesting to do an in depth analysis on how much negative influence players have on their teams - Cristiano Ronaldo would be a good example because of his less refined link up play. But more so, even though he has a mindset that influences many of his teammates to become better, some of them also become worse. This is definitely not the case with Modric on these 2 points, he runs the speed of the game better than anyone else (a conversation Cristiano Ronaldo is no it) and his psychological influence is positive on all the players he plays with, they become better footballers, winners and they serve the team, all aspects of Modric's characteristics. Seeming that I'm using Cristiano Ronaldo as the example, Portugal with and without him is not a problem for Portugal, quite possibly they are an overall better team without him now. The 2016 Euro win is also misleading if we're to say that he lead them, as they seemed quite lucky - they didn't win a group stage game, they then played Croatia, Poland and Wales to make the final, and Cristiano was injured for the final. The point I'm trying to get at, he is a phenomenal player who will go down in the history of football as one of the all time greats with incredible winning mentality and influence on his teammates, but it's difficult to gauge a player's overall influence from stats, and certainly not from just goalscoring stats. Modric was the best in 2018 is my opinion. Great Video!

Beside Curtois & Bellingham, all current Real Madrid's first team were a back up player in their first season.

no lol Messi kept on winning after it even tho he shouldnt have at some points (like Lewandownski could have had o ne or Van dijk or Haaland) so its not that they were tired of Messi and Ronaldo domination Modric simply was the best player in 2018 writing it off as voters fatigue is disrespectful to modric

That he literally witnessed his grandfather die in front of him. Not sure how that isn’t considered scary

This story is whg modric us so overrated, especially when hes not even the best midfielder at real madrid over the last 10 years since kroos has been better every single seaosn

They are both spectacular. Luka can (still!) run the game like Toni, as he did last night vs Celta, but the German can't run and press like Croatian monster. Still flamboyant like 20 yrs ago when he was MoM against Messi's Argentina. Kroos just finished elementary school at that time

Touched by the hand of God. Luka is not a Balkan. To call him that is an insult. Luka is a Croat from a small region of Dalmacija. The pride of Zadar. His people would do anything for him. Mi smo Zadrani i Luka je nas!
