BEAUTIFUL ABANDONED 5 MILLION DOLLAR 1964 Mid Century Modern Dream Mansion

- This is a house I first discovered over two years ago. every time I tried to gain access it was always locked up. until recently i checked on it and to my surprise, was accessible!!!!
The house itself is 4200 square feet and was custom built in 1964 for Steve and Karen Flagg, and their 3 children. Steve was an engineer, and Karen is listed as "housewife". the children were all students of the local school.
in it's 56 years standing, it's had only 3 owners. the current owner plans on demolishing this one to construct a 9100 square foot mansion on the property.
this house is one of my favorite homes I have ever explored. hence why I decided to title it "dream mansion". you can bet that if I had 5 million dollars, I'd buy this place in a heartbeat.
When I see old places like this, I often think of the professionals who built it. Must have been incredible at their trade.
I wouldn’t demolish the mansion, I’d fix it up and keep it. I love houses and mansions from the 60’s and the 70’s.

The mid 50s thru the 60s were the pinnacle of living standards for the US as well as Canada in the decades that followed WW2. One man possessing the proper education and skills could earn enough to afford to build comfortable, spacious homes for himself and his family, while his wife remained in charge of and at 'home'.
When I brought my house in 1994 I wanted an older home. My house was built in 1968 built way better then today's homes 100% agree with you
House is near my age was born 1966,houses were made good back then.

There were defintely lousy houses built in the 60s, but they wouldn't have been around in 1994. ;)
Imagine beeing a teenager girl, and live in the room upstairs with blue carpet, lots of storage, your own bathroom with two sinks, awesome!

This walk through brought back memories. We used the cassette head cleaner, we had the thermostat and those door handles were in my house.

That was a beautifully old home... I love the layout and the big sink in the bathroom is for washing your hair.. like a small beauty parlor....the figurine you saw was a cabbage patch kid.....

I couldn't agree more! Tearing down quality homes to put up ugly substandard junk that wont last 20 years is not smart at all. I prefer quality. That house was built to last!
I know, right? They could build them as good as they used to, but usually don't.
Some people don't know a good thing when they see it. You'd have to be a complete idiot to want to tear down this masterpiece of a home. Such a shame.

Incredible. What a bonus that turquoise Moffett in the basement was! It breaks my heart to know a McMansion will stand there.
My Mom always called the curtains that were hung midway down cafe curtains. We had them in our house in the early 1970s.
Cafe curtains doesn’t mean how they are hung but they are usually hung at the half way point. That type of curtain is typically a cotton, or a light weight fabric and usually the longest length for them is 36” or maybe 45”. They are mostly used in kitchens, laundry rooms or powder rooms.

someone could make that a beautiful home again, if I had the mean I would find something old and give it new life. History is fabulous
I fell in love with the lazy Susan's. We use to have two lazy Susan's in our house. They are sooo high though. Thank you for sharing with us. The more the wood the better.
Fun Fact: I was born in November of 1964. This was a grand house when it was built. I wish I could've seen it in all of it glory.
I agree 100% with you. Its a shame that these homes are demolished for new construction. It saddens me that great architecture and design is destroyed. As you stated & I sooo agree, sooo sad to loose this home for a newer one, it will not have the features or be made as well as this one was😞They need to save the washer, drier & wooden cabinets before demolition. Yes, it needs updating, but you will not get another house with the quality of this one! Thank you for sharing this beautiful home ❤️
I love the whole house.I see no reason to tear it down.From the rug in the dining room to the kitchen and pantry all the storage to the basement love it.The bathrooms are nice but the wall paper is something else😃.I think it's probably the carpet that makes the house smell.lovely place.👍👍💗
Loved this house. And ur right... the workmanship is not the same today as it was back then. They build ‘em as fast as they can to move on to the next project.

This is such a beautiful and unique house. Even the back yard looks like it would be beautiful if it were still well maintained. It’s really a shame that that someone who appreciates it’s couldn’t just buy it and fix it up a little.

So much fun looking around these houses, Mid Century is literally unbeatable in my view. The stories these walls hold within them you can only imagine. It's so bittersweet enjoying this vid yet knowing the house will soon be no more
Interesting to find that head cleaner cassette, and it's a top brand. As I reached age 13 in 1978, I came of age right when the casette boom was taking off (music was on 8-tracks earlier in the 70s). In the 1970s Ampex was big. Then around 1980 the Japanese brands came in: Maxell, TDK, Sony. I remember Memorex, and 3M too. In a tape player, regular tape is moved past the playback head, which picks up the recording magnetically. Over time the head accumulates dirt that rubs off various tapes, and the head cleaner is used to get the grime off. The cleaner is shaped like a regular casette, but when you look at the tape, it isn't dark brown, it's real light, mesh-like pattern that scrubs as it's pulled across the head. You drop the cleaner tape in and try to play it. It'll run, of course with no sound, but 10 seconds is usually enough and you pop it back out of the player.
You were born around 1966....I was born in 1950....so we're in the era of things better built...VHS tapes,Cassette Tapes...

In Wyoming, Ohio (Cincinnati suburb) I grew up playing and riding bicycles on a couple intersecting streets lined with some still SHARP-LOOKING homes built in the 1960s, my two most favorite houses of all on one of those streets have enclosed, gated front yard terraces.

That odd shaped sink in the Jack-and-Jill bathroom could be for a small child, like a baby bathtub with a sprayer. I remember seeing one similar as a kid.

My mom had a sink like that in her master bath. We always thought it was to wash your hair in it....though it wasn't that deep

Kohler plumbing sold them well into the late 90's and called them a "man-lav" (mens-lavatory) for the guys to wash their hair in. I don't know why one would do such a practice, but apparently it was a thing.

I love watching his videos. The fact that he's so young and is genuinely interested in every little detail of each house is so rare. Most people his age would want to destroy while he's busy checking out wall paper and cabinet knobs. I am with you Ethan! Off center fireplace really vexes my sense of right and wrong! Amen too about the waste and shame of demolishing such a unique and most importantly, well built home!! Love that you took your time and we got to see most of it for the first time right along with you! My how far you have come Ethan, and improved tons since you started!!

Oven in Mechanical room was to heat up appetizers for the bar room while having a party. Given the size of the family room and the bar room, I'm surprised there wasn't another kitchen downstairs. Very cool house overall. And how Ethan likes to chat !

This house was awesome! The architect, engineer, and builder out did themself. They should really update and preserve it, not tear it down.
You really found a beautiful dream mansion, it's gorgeous.... They should let someone have that house and just pay to have it moved instead of tearing it down

I love this house! It does remind me of my childhood back in old days when these type of houses were only 3 to 5 years old of age. It would be beauty if only someone could had move house to new location to restore this old gem. I do really love purple bathtub. That weird sink in bathroom is great way to wash long hair on young girls when you don’t have time for full shower or bath if you have bed head in the mornings. That is amazing pool! Concrete room would be good shelter room during tornado safety wise.

This house never seems to end! You could live here with your whole family and if ya didn't get along, you'd never have to see each other, lol! Totally agree, I'd keep it. Some paint, new flooring, out with a few things, but it would stay if for no other reason than all the space.
Wow is all I can say! What a gorgeous home. The layout was really nice too, it flowed well. I know the house is 56 years old, but to me, it doesn't seem so old (maybe because I'm older LOL) but it could still be awesome with some reno's. Houses over 100 yrs old have been renovated and are amazingly beautiful so I agree with you, it''s such a shame that they tear down quality workmanship to throw up a house in a short amount of time that may look big and to some impressive, but come with issues. Today it's time is money so the houses go up so fast, and you just know the quality isn't there, nor is the individuality of the home either. Thanks again for sharing with us this amazing place.

That was fantastic, I love that style of home, with all the added extras with the sauna and pool room and bar.
Sometimes renovating can cost as much as starting from scratch. But if the blue prints are avaliable it would easy enuf to figure out if it would be feasible. So typical of today's generation to not understand or learn about what has come before the 2000! This house appears to be welk built...the basement has held up well.. good indication that it was done right. Like the floor plan even for today. Keep every one in shape with all the stairs....when ya get older they kind loose their appeal!:)
I went to look at a house in the woods, stone on the outside and looked like it was plopped by fairies in the middle of an overgrown forrest. Upon entering, the floor was like a trampoline. Wood floors and ceiling in a lot of it, stone fireplaces, beautiful. The walls would've needed ripping down to the studs. Lots of mold. It hurt my soul. The renovations would've been astronomical. The ancient trees around the place (which caused a lot of the issues) would've needed removing. Every few months I check to see if it's been sold. It got under my skin. But yes, would me much cheaper to raze and start over.

The master bedroom suite is about the same size as the apartment that my husband and I lived in when we first got married.
Really cool house! Those Nutones bring back a lot of memories form me. They definitely don’t build that kind of quality anymore. Very sad.

What a great house!!! I wouldn't remodel anything, just restore it to it's former glory. I love the vintage bathroom fixtures and that old stove is to die for. All those shelves!! The stone fireplaces remind me of my grandparents house. They lived in a MCM when I was a little kid. Just because someone has money, it doesnt mean they have any brains or taste!! I would at least think they would let someone salvage as much as they could from that house before demolishing it to build a Mcmansion

The house I grew up in had the exact same linoleum in the kitchen that this house has! I loved that linoleum as a kid. And the front doors to my childhood home had the handle in the center, like this house. Love the huge kitchen cabinets with the multi-tier lazy susan in them. So cool.
Fantastic place, it’s so big and a good layout. People don’t need to rebuild ,if you don’t like the vintage look just modernise it. I need a intercom in my house so I don’t have to scream my lungs out calling the kids for meal times haha . The garden plants are beautifully established ,it’s such a shame that it’s all going to go. Those cabinets are early 80s. I know this because of my grandmother's obsession with redoing her houses. She was never satisfied with her kitchens, she always had to update. That dark dark wood and the kind of lazy susan is from 83ish when they became popular. That wallpaper in the kitchen is not 60s. It looks like it is but it is most definitely early 90s, and it looks like the crap on the walls of the old bathrooms of the movie theater I worked at as a teen.

cd1144 my grandparents also put the same flooring in their kitchen in the late 60s, patterned linoleum floors stayed popular until the 90s

You answer all our comments and your videos are getting better and better...you seem to be learning about what & when. I worked at a 60's store and people told me I knew so much but I'm 68.haha. I lived it! Anyway, I am proud of ypu.

I would've loved this home as it was, amazing what sanding, filling holes, adding new hardware and refinishing those cabinets and woodwork would've done, upgrade some electrical, maybe remove some of the wallpaper and paint it some nice colors to offset what you decide on the cabinets, maybe also replace the appliances and other fixtures, and it would literally be like being in a dream, I love that butcher block like counter, it would definitely stay.

Love old homes too. They don't make them like that any more :( It get them up & sell them. I would love an old home but can't afford them. No one cares about their crafts any more. It is so sad too. Love to watch you. You are so interesting & so knowledgeable about so many things. I wish more young people were into good things like you. I wish I was as smart as you when I was your age but it was a different time & I thought I had forever. Time just went to fast. Keep up all your good work & stay safe.
I've always admired this house in this premium neighbourhood where you could apparently buy them in the $60K range when it was built. Man, the '80's & '90's traditional treatment inside is rotten to the core in this contemporary plan raised side split. Was on this street last week to see a client and most of the best original houses are gone or slated for demolition, another mausoleum will be built in Toronto. The new house under construction behind this beauty either has a huge indoor pool or a huge indoor tennis/basketball court. Thanks for sharing, I'll commit the exterior to memory!
Ethan, I love your videos, but please please please follow your dream of becoming an architect... vision is what you have and that needs to be put down on paper via blueprints. It is a long process but you will feel so fulfilled once you are designing YOUR homes for other people and they love them as much as you do. Please look into it.... your talent needs to be shown off to the world! PS plus keep doing videos while you are becoming an architect. :-)
What an interesting house. It is massive! That weird sink that didn’t match the other one was likely a hair washing sink. This is your channel and if folks don’t like you saying What is up Guys, they can scroll on. Your OCD was driving you nuts this time. Lol That fireplace and the lights being off center bothered me too. 😂
