Boy do I miss the days of vibrant colors in the home. My husband and I are empty nesters and moved to a smaller home. We are redoing each room here in color (not like these shown) and our grown kids are trying to talk us out of it. We love it.

I helped build the California 80's Mansion, I got there at the end and helped tile the driveway. I also helped build the rotating dining table. The table sat on a rotating 24' Platform and rotated one time an hour, so that everyone got a view of the entire room.

I wish vids like this showed staff accommodations, too. The more elaborate the family rooms, I can't help but wonder how the servants fared.

That color from the sixties and seventies that you call mustard was actually called harvest gold. Some of those houses would have been considered strange
even when they were new. Trendy is one thing, but tacky is quite another. Perhaps a side effect of being nouveau riche?

I can speak about most of the properties from the last 50 years or so through my own experience. The common denominator is lots of money without any sense of taste. So many of these are absolutely loaded with the worst of the trends of the period, and "trendy" decor NEVER ages well. They are a fun glimpse into a past time NOW, but many would have been considered tacky at the time that they were built. Wow.

  • @rixtunz3625

Uuummm...that last house did NOT have "Shag" carpet, it's called cut pile/plush. If you think THAT is "shag" carpet, then you don't know what it was at all. Shag carpet was often VERY long pile, like from 2 to 2-1/2 inches long twisted strands, to a shorter, more fuzzy-looking 1" to 1-1/4 inch long pile. That green carpet looks like 1980's-1990's PLUSH. I'm no fashionista, but I LOVE carpet, and I know those styles innately.
