the Gitano has a little pip on the blade tang that engages in the spring! That Vastly increases lock strenght! Swiss army knives have this on their flat head screw driver... but not their main blade for some reason...

    • @nirfz
      @nirfz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You are more likely to apply pressure with the screwdriver than stab with the SAK blade.
Am using a swiss army knife for 30 years and have never had the blade accidently close on me.

A very fair review... although I don’t agree with your thoughts on slipjoint safety ...or the lack thereof! I’m a big fan of slipjoint knives....That said, I think the main comment that needs to be made about the Gitano is that it’s a fucker to open!

For me having a slipjoint is sentimental nostalgia. My first knives were slipjoints and i have many fond memories attached to them.. Unfortunately i dont have any of them anymore. But i still have the memories. Beyond sentimentality i also enjoy the simplicity fo slipjoints and friction folders. They will never replace any of my locking knives but they do have a place in my rotation.

i live in germany and we are only allowed to carry slipjoint. Or knives that don't lock if you can open them with one hand. Or knives that lock and you can't open them with one hand. However, there have also been judgments where the judges were of the opinion that the Spyderco UKPK was “locked” with the index finger, and the owner was fined. Long story short, I love my Gitano!

Lol! Yeah, and it definitely doesn't go in reverse - you can't lop off someone's arm with the Lionsteel Gitano! 🤣
I have a very long "wish-list" for knives, and the Cold Steel Espada XL is on that list, but, I must say, it is almost at the very end of my list, because it is SUCH a ridiculously large folding 'pocket-sword-knife', and yet it has that factor that every male can identify with - that teen-age kid who is still in there and thinks ninja stars and nun-chucks are cool - that part of the male psyche that makes us say, "Öh yeah baby" when we see a knife like the Espada XL!!

Hi Pete! I know this is an older video, but it was nice to see a full view of your work space - Very nice! I appreciate this video. I only own 2 slip joints, but recently I've gotten more interested in them. I completely agree with you that there is no way they can compete with modern blades with various means of 1-handed deployment and solid lockup. I think I just like the 'nostalgia'of it! It is like people buy older cars and fix them up - they cannot compare with all of the technology and modern safety features of a brand-new car, but there is just that cool factor that makes it worth it. I think the slip joints are good for light-use tasks where you're only pulling out your blade occasionally. If you need a hard use tool that you're constantly using throughout the day, a slip joint is just not appropriate and too frustrating. When I am really busy, I find myself trying to use one-handed techniques I use on other knives and then almost cutting myself!
Anyway, I am planning to get a Lionsteel Roundhead Barlow in Rams Horn soon, but I was not really considering the Gitano. After watching your video, I definitely want to get one - such an elegant gentleman's carry (but still a bit edgy with that big clip point!). Thanks for taking the time to do this video so I know it is one I would want. By the way, I also want to get a Lionsteel Willy (fixed blade) in Santos wood. Such a beautiful little knife with a unique handle shape. This is also a light-duty knife, but it seems great to just stick the knife (in it's leather sheath) into your pocket or pack to pull out for some whittling, etc. Like the slip joint theme, the LS Willy is a bit more "form over function"; it's easy to think of 10 small fixed blades that are probably more practical or have a better blade shape/edge for whittling, but it is just that enjoyable cool factor of using such a classy, unique knife that makes it worth it!
Take care Pete! I was encouraging people in my Reddit conversations to tune into your channel the other day - you're one of the best!

my personal thoughts: I appreciate you reviewing slipjoint knives, too! Of course one handed opening knives are more convenient (in a more technical aspect), but considering restricitons in some counrties, sometimes you have to carry slipjoints (if it is not appropriate to use such one in certain environments), and a competent view on such knives is always interesting and maybe helpful considering buying a knife.

Excellent job with the new Knife Lab, Pete! Clean, spacious, and well lit. The tool boxes and table are very nice too. I can completely relate to your knife purchase. Sometimes you just want one. Did the same thing last month with a customized Buck 110. Didn't need it. Just wanted it. It's in my USA DNA. It is my new edc and I'm loving it. No regrets on the purchase. That olive wood handle on your knife is quite handsome. Nice choice. Enjoy it! Stay healthy.

About half of my (admittedly very small) collection is slip joints. I hadn’t planned it that way, life just kinda lead me there.
I agree 100% that it’s the most inferior open/close and locking mechanism, but I find that most people are way more suspicious of lock-up failure than is really warranted. I had a small Case knife (I lost it 😢) which I put through it’s paces doing medium-duty work including wood carving and shredding up a giant vinyl tent, and it never once acted like it was going to close on me.
I have a theory that since slip joints are a kid’s first knife, and since kids are hopelessly spastic, it’s inevitable that they will push on the back of the blade and food it on themselves. Then, when all grown up, they remember slip joints as the kind of knives you can cut yourself on easily. It would be like saying a record player is dangerous to use because you can mess up either the record or the turntable. As long as you’re not trying to do anything too wild, a slip joint will accomplish 99% of all cutting tasks you’ll ever need it to do. No need for a $450 titanium frame lock to open cardboard boxes.

I haven't carried a slip joint since my teens and I've never bought one, but I agree with everything you said here. I've always thought if I was going to give a kid a knife, my first choice would be a fixed blade for safety and simplicity. If it had to be a folder, I'd look to a compression, button or axis lock etc that you can close safely in one motion without your fingers ever going in front of the edge.

I really love slipjoints, but I still have this irrational fear of them closing on my fingers while I'm using one. I still have quite a few, but I honestly don't use them that often because they just not as practical. I wish more companies would add a finger choil to the blade like the Spyderco UKPK or the Kizer Zipslip so I can be less paranoid.
Also, the whole "I don't have X, I must buy one immediately" thing was something I did constantly when I first started getting into knives. I went a little overboard with it, wanting to try something from most of the larger knife companies, wanting something with every different blade shape, or one of every locking mechanism, or something in different handle or blade materials. It's fun but it's definitely not the smartest way to buy knives. I have way too many.

i have a friction folder and it’s smaller than my index finger but it has three really thin blades. if i add them together then I had 8” of cutting edge with three different edges geometry and three tips. they don’t hold an edge and they rust but they are super easy to get shaving sharp. one of the blades is a pen blade which is so perfect for certain things like pumpkin carving but it’s mainly a second knife for tanking damage like tape gunk so my main knife stays clean.

I have this, same model. And I really like it, Has a very strong lockup for a slipjoint. But I stopped carrying it when it's cold or wet, because with a strong spring and no nail nick it's pretty much impossible to operate safely in any kind of wet or slippery situation. And when opening the blade in the cold it sends a numbing shock through my hand. So for me this is strictly a summer carry, and I use the lionsteel jack2 the rest of the year when in in a slipjoint mood.

You open and close them one handed, they’re safe, made well, comfortable, cut well, etc.
So, if you’re ever drunk and wantin to give slippies another go, I’d recommend something like the UKPK (they’ve got a whole family of them and more coming though).

I am a diehard slipjoint fan to the bone but I'd be lying if I tried to claim modern opening mechanisms weren't superior in terms of function/ ease of use.... they just are. Aside from a few novelty concepts, most all modern deployment methods are quicker, more efficient, and easier to operate. I personally like slipjoints specifically in slower-paced areas of my life or in mixed company social settings. I can also get along with a slippie just fine in other EDC and work situations as well with no problem but flippers and thumb tabs etc certainly work those jobs even easier. The one area I'd say slippies ARE often the superior choice is in situations when you REALLY don't want to draw attention to your knife. Need to pull out your pocket knife at the post office to open a box, remove some contents, and then send some off elsewhere? A basic old school slipjoint doesn't even get a glance from people... a flipper or thumb-tab knife almost always gets at least a couple heads turned.

@@kevola5739 Absolutely and that is another reason I enjoy them, especially in leisure time situations. That charm of a nice slipjoint often works as a little mental reminder to relax and not get in a rush. Somewhat similar to why I like grinding out sumi ink when I'm drawing instead of just using pre-prepared bottled ink... helps me just take a second and relax and engage instead of just trying to speed through whatever my task is.

I’m really looking LionSteel slip joints, they have great designs and great materials for not a bad price. I wish they would run their M390 a little harder but that’s standard for European makers it seems.

go with the Gitano which is niolox. It's much more suitable steel for acute edge angles.

Bloody great! Reallly appreciate your vids....surprised you had another job: growing outsize willy shaped veggies and being a truly decent knifey YTber I thought would have been enough? I am keen to know what field it is in.

I don't begrudge you your opinion on slipjoints at all, even though I love them. That's because I recognize that yes, it is a bit of an antiquated design for any knife.
I have a few good locking modern folders, an assortment of rugged fixed blades, and mostly slipjoints in my collection. Why? Because I think they're cool, and I could spend hours and hours telling you why I think they're cool, but really I just think they're cool.
I like the historical value of them, the old world aesthetics they tend to have, the fact that they're legal everywhere, and the fact that they're usually ground like a scalpel. I think, if you can't find enjoyment in that, they're really not for you. And I don't see a damn thing wrong with that. Cheers!

In most 🇪🇺 countries it's the only Kind of knife to carry. In 🇩🇪 we have a shit law for knives...

In the UK too, this is also 8.7mm too long to be legal in this country, irritating!

I have the opposite take on the aesthetics, I love that handle, but don’t care for the blade shape.

I guess I am glad they still make slip joints but still, why go backwards?
