    I did road side assistance and I used a crappy jack like the one you hate.
    Two 6x6x6 blocks of wood. Adjustable 1/2 inch ratchet from harbor freight with sockets. A 1/4 impact dewalt with the 1/2 inch adapter.
    I used the impact to turn the jack. I could change any tire on any vehicle in less than 5 minutes and it all fit in a dewalt tool bag.
    I carry same setup in my daily without the wood blocks and I’ve switched to Milwaukee.

      @@JirafaBo side by side in my bag and jack and tools stacked beside them. I think they were 4” tall though.
      Now I have a 10” 4x4 block in my van. No roadside though that’s just what I carry.

    That is a very nice jack, however I wonder are you gonna have the clearance to get under the frame, if you actually had a flat tire. Can you give it a test on TH-cam. Thank you very much

    Recently bought a Powerbuilt 6000 Lb UniJack from Pep Boys. Returned it the first day, hydraulic fluid in the bottom of the box (New jack). When pumped up, the jack leaked fluid and air at the seal below the large nut holding in the ram. These seem to be hit and miss as far a functionality and dependability goes.

    On my 2005 f150 with 17 inch tires I need my jack to be under 7 inches to fit under the axle when I have a flat..like I did today. The scissor jack bent about 30 degrees when the blacktop started swallowing my jack and fell off..this made things fun. I would have sang the peanut butter song if I had only know it..but I do now haha.

    That jack will ONLY work for trucks - won't fit under my full-frame 2005 Explorer. Wore me out the other day cause I had to jack the high portion behind the back wheels and I could not raise it high enough to get the tire off without exceeding the jack's reach. Picture that! Even with a 2x4 base and a perfect start - it didn't have enough extension to clear the tire without relying on the bottle jack alone. So - definitely need a high-range floor jack like the LiftMaster 3 Ton SUV High Lift Floor Trolley. I'm looking for alternatives to jackstands as well for more height.

    Great video and thanks for the demonstration. I was looking at this product last night and wasn't so sure whether to get it or not as I have a lifted truck, but this will definitely work since my roller floor jack only goes up to 18" and it works well then I lift at the axle or the control arm. Will definitely be getting this jack

    The scissor lift jacks serve a purpose. They can be very low profile, so they will fit under a car that does not have much ground clearance. This is especially useful when you are changing the tire on a car that is not only low, but only has a single jack point front and rear of each side. Scissor lift jacks like that are also a lot lighter than the hydraulic jacks while still being strong enough to lift the vehicles in question. And, of course, they are cheaper to make, so that is an advantage as far as the car manufacturers are concerned. There's no one jack that works for everything. Keep a bottle jack for my pickup, but I also keep some small pieces of 2x4s handy for cribbing. Depending upon where you are when you have a flat, you might have to improvise a bit. At home though, I'll just use my floor jack on my pickup, but my wife's BMW is too low to the ground for that, so I have to either use the scissor jack or make up a sort of mini stepped "ramp" from some 2x8 pieces so that I can get the tire up a few inches more so that the floor jack can get to the designated jacking point. Improvise and overcome... :)

    • @Allergic2Stagnation
      @Allergic2Stagnation 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd carry both jacks if possible. I really like the jack stand/ jack combo. But I hadn't considered the blow out situation where there's minimal clearance to jack up the vehicle

    • @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
      @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Mr Ranger
      In a blowout situation, you could also carry some wood blocks with you and drive up on them to get to the height that you would have normally been at with an aired up tire.
      I would like to think that the car manufacturers think this through well enough that they provide a jack with the car that can go low enough that it will still work even when the car is sitting on it's rims, but considering some of the braindead design decisions that I've seen over the years, I wouldn't necessarily bet on it. :)

      @corporateragnar5940 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Outstanding observation

    • @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
      @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      And let's not forget, those scissor jacks are pretty dependable as long as you don't physically damage them. If they are just sitting in your truck for years and years, as long as you don't get your car flooded and they end up rusting, they will be as good 20 years down the road as they were brand new. A hydraulic jack on the other hand has a bit more than can go wrong with it, so you might actually want to check it periodically. If one of the O-rings gets old and doesn't hold pressure anymore, the jack will either not work or it will slowly settle on you. It might also lead hydraulic fluid. Also, some of the hydraulic jacks do not work well in a horizontal orientation, so that might be a concern for certain alternative uses for the jack. I might prefer to use a hydraulic jack, but considering how light and compact the scissor jacks are, I will still carry one of them as a backup, just in case.

    • @Garacha222
      @Garacha222 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If anybody reads the amazon reviews on the jack this video recommends, they'll see many 1 star reviews because of leaking oil. maybe after servicing, the jack will hold up, but I'd rather not have the leaked oil in my trunk to deal with.
      I had a scissor jack damaged from un-safely jacking up an suv ... the suv tires were not secured and the vehicle dropped. That drop twisted the jack, and it is no longer useable. I am searching for a replacement aside from a smaller one from a different old car.

    Scissor jacks do serve a purpose but they are probably the most DANGEROUS of all!
    I had a cheapy one that I used to change a tire on a Nissan Frontier! I got it good and jacked up and just as I was getting the tire off it failed and sent fluid and sharp metal clear across the street! Missed my leg by mere inches! Fucked the wheel assembly all to hell!

    Don't know how it came out the box all ready bled and ready to go
    Got 2 of them a big 1 and a smaller 1 I got mine a tractor supply and I had to bleed it
    There ok not to nock the facts though they are ment for trucks
    I got the big 1for a ram 1500 at the time worked great got a Dakota not so good
    Got the smaller version of the same jack now the truck is to low for it to fit
    The story is the thing is a great idea all in 1box will not work on all vihicals do to hight restrictions
    And that's to bad for all other things still a good tool
    I still own the Jack's wonder if there is a smaller one still To double it up that's an idea if the bottle Jack has a screw up type ajustment and the jack stand has the stuff it comes with to get up under lower trucks will be a nicer selling point
    Just saying but not bad since I got 2of them

    While this seems to be a Very Useful lifting option, it is BULKY !!! If someone has Space Limitations, on a relatively light GVW (truck), what is a better option ?
    The OE bottle jack doesn’t have the lift range to accommodate my 3” lift, and those gigantic “farm” lifts (bumper jacks ?) aren’t a consideration.
    Seems like R.V. Scissor jack is only option for roadside flats. Again, Limited Space :~(

      Yea, roll jacks are ex. I got 3 of em! But for my truck, dont work. You cant raise the arm up n down. Gotta use bottle like this one.
      Except I got HF air btl jack. Think it's like 20 ton maybe.
      Unless there's some type of extended arm or something like that, on a roller, they don't work when rolled that far under big pick up.
      The base/jack has to go under the truck to the axles, or differential, by time it gets that far under truck, that arm ain't goin up n down. Or maybe 50 tiny up/downs w the arm might do it, but f that.
      And if it did somehow get it up, how's it going to let it back down w the arm all horizontal only? Once under truck It wont go all way vertical so to let jack down.
      Anyway, you or someone might know of a type of roller w extended arm? 3 ton+? One the the thing can actually be pumped up normally, not bunches of tiny pumps because jack is so far under?

    Scissor jacks are soooo dangerous and unstable tbh

      every type of road side jack is pretty awful tbh. This one seems pretty great. The worst ive ever used was one that used built in jack points on a 1980s Mercedes. It fell several times while I was working on it. Ive had bad experiences with them all. but that was pretty freaking bad. A stiff breeze would knock that car off that jack.

    The reviews on Amazon are really bad.

      Ron West 4.2 stars out of 5 with 712 reviews. That’s not really bad. I have two of them. I’ve been satisfied with mine.

      I was just looking at it and most of the review page said it leaked and didn't work. it did seem like a good idea.

      Ron West I just looked. I sorted by most recent reviews. I seen 2 out of over a hundred that said it leaked. I think some of the reviewers don’t understand how a hydraulic bottle jack works. Mine work great and don’t leak. If you remove the pressure relief screw it’ll leak, as all hydraulic jacks do. You also have to lift up on the locking lever or the jack won’t lower. It’s part of the safety features. Not sure what to tell you. I’m good with mine.

    Your commentary is moot on this one. Too tall for a flat tire. A log and a fulcrum will left a car. Nice try.

      Actually, the jack works fine on my VAN and my TRUCK. You stick with your log, I'll continue using this awesome bottle jack floor jack combo. Here's a link so you can read more information about it - amzn.to/2mSr598

      What a hilariously retarded comment. "crap, i got a flat, better go find a log and rock to drag to my car. Still somehow beats carrying a 3lb jack in my vehicle"
      I'm actually standing here in walmart at the jacks holding back laughter imagining someone walking down a highway on a rainy night looking for a tree to fell just cuz they were too cheap to get a proper jack.

      what kind of spastic uses a log as a jack for a car, are you Fred Flintstone or something ?

    The question is: Will it fit under a pick up with a flat? We know that it does as long as all of the tires are inflated.
    If it doesn’t, it’s useless in a roadside emergency!
