+dokanyon Goddamn man, I think the same thing! For example rampart it's phenomenal, really fit with elf/unicorn theme, with that flute and calm melody. What an amazing soundtrack. I really love Fortress theme, how explode the music in some point.
There is not a single one lacking. I really am astounded at the fact that every single one is so perfect and represents their respective towns so perfectly. Even Cove, that was created so much later!
One of my top 5 games of all time. It's like an epic board game the way it plays. The music is second to none, and I've never had so much fun with a map editor.
Ok , real talk: I'm listening to this while I'm pretty drunk and these songs just make me so happy... Thank you Paul Romero for creating not just this, but so many iconic songs. Bless your incredibly creative soul. Words can not describe how grateful I am for these songs to be an important part of my childhood
I’m 29 now, been playing Heroes III since I was at least 8, and I easily have about 1,000 hours or more logged in this game. I still play it about every week on GOG. And I still have the discs.
The Necropolis theme is such a master piece! The end of it makes you believe even dead people used to have treasuable moments. When it closes to the end, it suddenly depicts lifeless no more, but also reminds people that they were mortal too. Maybe a lich persued ultimate magic power and scrificed all the time with his beloved one.The end brings out his regret. Or a skeleton being summoned fights against someone he didnt even know in his life, but one moment he saw a familiar face of another undead. He knows that they were companions in the last advanture when they were alive. Then, the end paints the melancholy of a lost soul.

Almost 20 years have passed since I was introduced to this Game... I was like 7 years old playing on my old Intel Pentium 2, I remember it was a cold winter, school was canceled due to heavy snow fall , and my brother installed this game, i got a chance to play with TOWER.... The moment I started playing this game lifes mysteries started coming, the Obelisks, the Good vs Evil philosophy of living,... The way the hero explored the map, uncovering great mysteries.... From that moment on, my life philosophy was to travel, explore the world, listening to oriental music, exploring various cultures... 20 YEARS later, today I am succesfull young Lawyer, with 40 countries 3 continents 10 seas and 3 oceans visited... Be a hero of your own life ... Cheers from Europe :) :)
Did anyone else notice the Dies Irae counter-melody playing in the Necropolis theme? I'm still amazed at how intricate this soundtrack was for its time. Even now! There are times when the music sounds like it was composed by Stravinsky.
Fortress: "Let us live peaceful in our swamps, or you will pay with your life, tasting the power of poison and venom burning your blood... you are adviced... get out of here and nobody will be hurt" Stronghold: "We are a strong and passionate community that cooperate with the other and live in the great mountains... always together fighting for the ours. Our hearts are filled by bravery and we will do everything to defend our nation" Dungeon: "We are horrible for the others... But we can't see nothing under earth, so... what does horrible mean for you?" Necropolis: "Don't worry... you are already dead, nothing will happen... it is just the end, that is all... death is cold... but nobody cares what you feel... it is scarying, i know... but someday you will accept it" Inferno: "You will feel what pain really is... do you see this?? it's nothing but a very big chain to put in your feet like a slave. You will be here forever... oh look at this, a burning iron bar... let's start with the funniest part..." Tower: "Fantasy is our main word!! Mystic, intelligence, we are fantastic creatures in a magic world! Disney looks so small, isn't it? Feel the knowledge of a powerful wonderland" Rampart: "Welcome to our place, where you will feel confortable forever. Feel the nature and peace in your heart, and enjoy it with all of us. We will help you whenever you need, and nobody will interrupt our quite life" Castle: "We are humans. We are you. And you know it, cause you are reading this... and yes, we are good... but only if you do your best. We are one, you and me. Let's go!"
I like how the good and evil factions are reflections of each other: Castle: A grand and beautiful landscape that inspires hope. Inferno: A sinister and forsaken wasteland that seeds despair. Rampart: A vibrant forest glen that teems with life. Necropolis: A cold, desolate valley that is surrounded by death. Tower: A sanctuary for the wise high up on the white mountains where the sun always shine. Dungeon: A refuge for the wretched down below in the dark caves where no light can shine. Of course, that’s not including the neutral factions: Stronghold, Fortress, and Conflux.
@@patinho5589 not a specific one. It's an old medieval hymn which main theme has been used by thousand other composers throughout history until this date.
I love all of these themes equally, theyre pure masterpieces. Fortress is just amazing though, with the intensity it builds up. You dont see that kind of composing in videogames anymore :(
Fortress is good early-game. They all have high defence, and nearly each creature has some effect to it. The dragon flies cast weakness and dispel, Basilisks petrify, Mighty Gorgons can kill extra units, Wyvern Monarchs can poison units, and the chaos hydra is a ramped up version of the Cerberus.
Adam Williams dragon flies are also insane fast, makes sure fortress heroes get the jump on others with their spells. Now if only they were good at spells...
Once upon a time, I memorized the Conflux music. Once upon a time, I played this game every day. Once upon a time, I got at least 100 of all creatures and won the game. Once upon a time, this was all in elementary school
Once upon a time, in early secondary school, while the other kids were playing ball over recess, I would run outside in the courtyard and play pretend prancing around on my horse picking up treasure, resources and fighting epic battles. Happened many more times than once.
ТО чувство, когда батя привез тебе диск с игрой, пахнущий свежей лицензионной краской, ты закачиваешь игру в комп на шумящем резаке-сидюке? и эта божественная пилорама дарит тебе незабвенные вечера
I can't believe how people aren't commenting about Stronghold, it may not have been my favourite faction but the theme song is just the best hands down.
wow... just WOW, all these town themes LITERALLY gave me goosebumps !! I just cant describe the AMAZING feeling I get from such GREAT ART !! BRAVO PAUL ANTHONY ROMERO !!!!
The Necropolis theme is very interesting and awesome! Music makes me think about a group of skeletons leading me to their town and introducing places, but in the end they go insane and start to dance with some unexplainable moves..
I'm playing this game at the moment on necropolis - Shit load of Dread knights, lots of vampire lords and they heal theirselves all the time. No ghost dragons because they look stupid :D Loads of zombies, skeletons and liches too
Same!! As a child I was always watching my dad play, the necropolis always scared me!! (And one day i heard the beautiful finish at the end and fell in love with the music)
Most replayed not at Necropolis??? WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE? 23 years since I've played this game for the first time and that violin still sends chills down my spine.
I've been playing too much DnD recently and thought about this: Lawful Good - Castle Neutral Good - Rampart Chaotic Good - Stronghold Lawful Neutral - Tower True Neutral - Conflux Chaotic Neutral - Fortress Lawful Evil - Dungeon Neutral Evil - Inferno Chaotic Evil - Necropolis
Technically tower is a good aligned town and Stronghold is neutral, so I would make Castle chaotic good, Tower lawful good, stronghold chaotic neutral, fortress true neutral and conflux lawful neutral but otherwise I agree with you!
Great comment of you and very accurate. I would just change places between necropolis and inferno..the dead have to play by rules in the world of the living right? While inferno wants to destroy everyone and everything. I comment with respect and to discuss no bad intentions🙏
I loved the "City management" in this game. The music really sets the tone for the different citites. I remember leaving the computer running while I did other things just to hear the great music in the background. ❤
Thank you Heroes 3. You made my childhood VERY VERY COLORFUL. I get cried to listening Stronghold's music. The best. Thank you for the childhood Heroes 3!
I played it as a kid and it inspired me to produce music =) All of the themes are not just music they are emtotions and I connect the townpanoramas in my mind when I hear it. Additionally I imagine how it would be to be truly there if they would exist as real towns and how the music is played every morning in that particular town as their hymne. My ranking is: 1. Tower Town and Rampart - I really can't choose one to be Nr.2 the compositions are both in my opinion the ones which brings the pictures most to life. Every time I'm outside in winter and I smell a bakery it reminds me of Tower Town =) This nice feeling to be in such a harmonized icy town with such elegant looking and sounding character is truly emotional. The theme and the picture of Rampart was the first Town I tried to remember as a kid because I just could play it on my uncle's PC I hadn't one at that moment, I really love this connectivity to natur in this town the roads, the trees and forest with unicorns in it and far away the mountain of green and golden dragons, the composition is heavenly and I always have a real pictue of this town in my mind when I hear it... that would be the town I really would like to see in reallife some day =) maybe an addicted rich person will bring it to life ^^. I have not such a strong emotional connection to the other towns from how they look because I feel they are not belonging to me as a character with certain attributes like anger and fury for inferno town, barbaric raw strength like stronghold, a strict feeling for law and order like in castle and so on. 2. Stronghold - the theme just let me feel free and think of a wide open landscape and fitting lifestyle ^^ 3. Conflux it's the latest I know but the composition is really complex, well written, mystical and mindblowing in my opinion I guess it would lay between rampart and tower town ^^ 4. Fortress Town - like some of my predecessors mentioned this is a damn nice written and produced piece of music I could never figure such a composition in my life I'm surprised how Paul Romero can create such complex pieces which are so easy to listen to as a 4 chord song and sounds even better, you can't compare this to other genres like pop, rock, techno, dubstep... etc and not even to classic and filmmusic these are soundtracks of life and big time life events I love it. 5.Dungeon - I would rank this as 2nd most complex song after Fortress Town, I like the cave feeling and of course I'm a fan of the black dragons which are in clash with the titans and I remember are the strongest units in vanilla game I know the tarnum campaigns had fee dragons? Rustdragons, crystaldragons like in the day of destroyer rpg game Might and Magic 8 and Azurdragons with 1000 hitpoints. 6. Inferno Town - the fury sound and the looks just mirrored the devil in me when I played this game =D for me it had more contrast as a person as Castle 7. Castle - I personally like every theme but this is one of the more "boring" ones which I can't identify with 8. Necropolis - I really hate death because we are living creatures otherwise we couldn't think about death at all, so this is my personal worst because my uncle I used to play with heroes 3 died when I heard this theme and my mom had my aunt on the phone and told me... even without that experience it would be my personal last but where is life is also death and so be it. Thanks for reading or not =D I was thinking about producing tributes to some town themes but I can't really find motivation =( I see a Fortess Town remake right in the youtube list I will check it ... hope it is better than the original but that is impossible, All in All Heroes 3 Of Might and Magic is the best Heroes I've ever played and I played all besides 1 so share your emotions too pls and PM me with that reaction =) Have a nice day whenever in the future that is ^^
These soundtracks are the singley reason why composers are what truly brings everything alive in games. Mute the sound and imagine there is a HOMM3 world without this music. You can't
Good old times when life was simple and full of joy. We run from school to friend´s house and play this epic game for hours. Great game, memories, friendship, btw Castle rules :))))
Ah the nostalgia is immaculate. All of these are complete masterpieces, work of art. If I have to rank them though I would have them in this order from top to bottom: castle, fortress, rampart, stronghold, conflux, inferno, necropolis, dungeon, tower
for the soundtracks and which I love the most: 1)Fortress; that climax 1 minute in is just superb 2)Stronghold; the beginning is epic, and the climax is hearing what it must be like to see a thunderbird in flight. 3)Tower; a mysterious waltz throughout, whimsical with the flutes and Ambitious with the determination of the strings. 4)Rampart; its a musical impression of a tranquil paradise, never growing too loud and I like it. 5)Necropolis I actually don't love it that much but it gets on my list for that solo harpsichord at the end. 6)Castle; a military, self glorifying, regal theme, quite smug but with some hints of corruption, I still like it, though I'm not sure why.
Niels Daniel Buch Yes, that blasted castle... There is something deceitful about its theme. High ideals that cannot be matched up by those living therein? Could be that you find its honesty about human culture intriguing. I agree with everything you say except for the fact that Rampart campaigns had me fall into hibernation and stop playing for months... The low pacing and overall serene settings prevent life from truly manifesting itself, but maybe that's just my opinion :D If nothing happens - nothing can progress. Harmony is hell, or atleast to me
Niels Daniel Buch I never understood why Necropolis had a market its like ''Hey lets build a market place where zombies, skeletons, whights are sure to give us some profit''
after seeing Game of Thrones I am beginning to think of Kings Landing with the castle theme, it looks great and is beautiful, but its rotten to its core.

The great thing about HOMM3's music , apart that it's phenomenal, it is that every theme fits with its race/town
+dokanyon Stronghold don't fit its race
+Justin A. Indeed. It should sound more "cruel, dark" or something, still epic though
+dokanyon Dokyanon
+dokanyon Dokyanon
+dokanyon Goddamn man, I think the same thing! For example rampart it's phenomenal, really fit with elf/unicorn theme, with that flute and calm melody. What an amazing soundtrack. I really love Fortress theme, how explode the music in some point.
There is not a single one lacking. I really am astounded at the fact that every single one is so perfect and represents their respective towns so perfectly. Even Cove, that was created so much later!
Damn right..glad to see the community still put a crazy amount of effort to keep this legendary game alive and glorious..hats off to those behind it
Stronghold theme
It is easily the most impactfull and emotional theme of them all!
The main reason I play Stronghold on 1v1s xD (I would play conflux but I play 1v1's on Heroes III HD)
I hate the castle but the music is beautiful
I'm a Necromancer player through and through, but I agree that Stronghold and Rampart are the two best tracks for all the towns. :)

Beautifully said.

Did anyone else notice the Dies Irae counter-melody playing in the Necropolis theme? I'm still amazed at how intricate this soundtrack was for its time. Even now! There are times when the music sounds like it was composed by Stravinsky.
i love rampart music
Dies irae you say, then check this out th-cam.com/video/u7VMEW2MByo/w-d-xo.html
All comments are basically people telling stories of nostalgia. Love it.
Fortress: "Let us live peaceful in our swamps, or you will pay with your life, tasting the power of poison and venom burning your blood... you are adviced... get out of here and nobody will be hurt"
Stronghold: "We are a strong and passionate community that cooperate with the other and live in the great mountains... always together fighting for the ours. Our hearts are filled by bravery and we will do everything to defend our nation"
Dungeon: "We are horrible for the others... But we can't see nothing under earth, so... what does horrible mean for you?"
Necropolis: "Don't worry... you are already dead, nothing will happen... it is just the end, that is all... death is cold... but nobody cares what you feel... it is scarying, i know... but someday you will accept it"
Inferno: "You will feel what pain really is... do you see this?? it's nothing but a very big chain to put in your feet like a slave. You will be here forever... oh look at this, a burning iron bar... let's start with the funniest part..."
Tower: "Fantasy is our main word!! Mystic, intelligence, we are fantastic creatures in a magic world! Disney looks so small, isn't it? Feel the knowledge of a powerful wonderland"
Rampart: "Welcome to our place, where you will feel confortable forever. Feel the nature and peace in your heart, and enjoy it with all of us. We will help you whenever you need, and nobody will interrupt our quite life"
Castle: "We are humans. We are you. And you know it, cause you are reading this... and yes, we are good... but only if you do your best. We are one, you and me. Let's go!"
Conflux?
Wtf xd
im suprised how not a single comment is about tower as the favourite. that music is a masterpiece and those titans + nagas are freaking awesome
I love tower aswell for cuddlefactor when playing easyer levels, but unforunaly I find it to be one of the worse town.
Tower is good for magic casters. They're too slow, though. The Dungeon and Castle are my personal preferences.
Khealim Inferno and castle is the shit bro
lexxisful Inferno was objectively speaking the weakest faction if I remember right.
Adam Williams Mass haste would fix the problem.
Stronghold's music, is definitely the best sound track of all towns !
And tower ! ^^
All themes !!!
All towns with Grail structures, nice touch!
My personal favorite is Tower. So airy, so wintery, so fitting. Beautiful!
To think about it. This game is soo old but is still like the soundtrack and listen to it and play the game itself. A true masterpiece !
+Chamelion Miller P.S. I loved the other HOMM games but they somehow lacked the "soul" of HOMM 3.
+Chamelion Miller I liked HOMM 2 almost as much.
I like how the good and evil factions are reflections of each other:
Castle: A grand and beautiful landscape that inspires hope.
I AM 40 years old and still love this game so much, music is just universal and incredible, I always have shivers when I listen IT💓💓💓💓💓💓💓😍😍😍😍
The last notes of necropolis town revealed all it's melancolia 💔
Last notes in Necropolis feels like: "You died... R.I.P"
The whole theme is actually based on the "dies irae" motif.
Melancholy*

I love all of these themes equally, theyre pure masterpieces. Fortress is just amazing though, with the intensity it builds up.
You dont see that kind of composing in videogames anymore :(
Totally nostalgic bullshit.
Or maybe you dont play modern games.
They're fast, but don't deal too much damage. They're essentially a weaker version of a Phoenix or Thunderbird.
That Stronghold music. Chills every time I hear it.
I can't count how many times I heard it throughout the years, but the Fortress theme still gives me goosbumps.
Best game music in history.
Thank you Paul Anthony for unforgettable gaming memories!
Once upon a time, I memorized the Conflux music.
Once upon a time, I played this game every day.
Once upon a time, I got at least 100 of all creatures and won the game.
Once upon a time, this was all in elementary school
Wise words
Once upon a time, in early secondary school, while the other kids were playing ball over recess, I would run outside in the courtyard and play pretend prancing around on my horse picking up treasure, resources and fighting epic battles.
Happened many more times than once.
Ofc it was in elementary school Conflux teaches in it's university about the elements. :))

Same!! As a child I was always watching my dad play, the necropolis always scared me!! (And one day i heard the beautiful finish at the end and fell in love with the music)
I was scared of losing, since there was this horrific game over scene. 😂
Most replayed not at Necropolis??? WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE? 23 years since I've played this game for the first time and that violin still sends chills down my spine.
The first few notes of the first song hit me by surprise and touched me so much that I started to tear up. Thank you for this masterpiece.
I've been playing too much DnD recently and thought about this:
Lawful Good - Castle
Neutral Good - Rampart
Chaotic Good - Stronghold
Lawful Neutral - Tower
True Neutral - Conflux
Chaotic Neutral - Fortress
Lawful Evil - Dungeon
Neutral Evil - Inferno
Chaotic Evil - Necropolis
Technically tower is a good aligned town and Stronghold is neutral, so I would make Castle chaotic good, Tower lawful good, stronghold chaotic neutral, fortress true neutral and conflux lawful neutral but otherwise I agree with you!
I'd go a little differently:
Castle = Lawful Good
Rampart = Neutral Good
Tower = Chaotic Good
Fortress = Lawful Neutral
Conflux = True Neutral
Stronghold = Chaotic Neutral
Necropolis = Lawful Evil
Dungeon = Neutral Evil
Inferno = Chaotic Evil
You know what, that is kinda true. They really match!
Great comment of you and very accurate. I would just change places between necropolis and inferno..the dead have to play by rules in the world of the living right? While inferno wants to destroy everyone and everything. I comment with respect and to discuss no bad intentions🙏
i'm crying! this is so beautiful... I had such a great time playing this game!
Necropolis quoted Liszt's most famous melody for death which makes it even better!
I absolutely loved this game - as for me, Necro Town
1. Necropolis
2. Inferno
3. Rampart
Stronghold and Rampart are my favourite tunes from this game. :)
I've spent hunderds of hours on this game and still play it.
"That's rookie numbers" 😏
I loved the "City management" in this game. The music really sets the tone for the different citites. I remember leaving the computer running while I did other things just to hear the great music in the background. ❤

Best music is Fortress and Dungeon by far i still hear them in my sleep :D

Upgrading a town was one of the most satisfying things ever...
Playing a fully upgraded Inferno or Tower was unreasonably fun
I remember playing it until 5am, and wake up early morning to play again, the good old days
9:23 the best part is when the necropolis ends the symphony is so awesome !!! ♥
Thank you Heroes 3. You made my childhood VERY VERY COLORFUL. I get cried to listening Stronghold's music. The best. Thank you for the childhood Heroes 3!
I played it as a kid and it inspired me to produce music =)
All of the themes are not just music they are emtotions and I connect the townpanoramas in my mind when I hear it. Additionally I imagine how it would be to be truly there if they would exist as real towns and how the music is played every morning in that particular town as their hymne.
My ranking is:
2. Stronghold - the theme just let me feel free and think of a wide open landscape and fitting lifestyle ^^
3. Conflux it's the latest I know but the composition is really complex, well written, mystical and mindblowing in my opinion I guess it would lay between rampart and tower town ^^
6. Inferno Town - the fury sound and the looks just mirrored the devil in me when I played this game =D for me it had more contrast as a person as Castle
7. Castle - I personally like every theme but this is one of the more "boring" ones which I can't identify with
You can't
Actually i did it from time to time to listen all the background ambient of the map.
I could listen to this all day.. its that peaceful
Brings back so many memories.... Fortress
Every single one is epic.
Good old times when life was simple and full of joy. We run from school to friend´s house and play this epic game for hours. Great game, memories, friendship, btw Castle rules :))))
HMM III, Shadow of death is my childhood. The gameplay, the fantasy, the music, the magic,...all is just wonderful.
Ah the nostalgia is immaculate. All of these are complete masterpieces, work of art. If I have to rank them though I would have them in this order from top to bottom: castle, fortress, rampart, stronghold, conflux, inferno, necropolis, dungeon, tower
Sleepless times and still will be!
Inferno may be trash, but it has amazing music.
for the soundtracks and which I love the most:
1)Fortress; that climax 1 minute in is just superb
2)Stronghold; the beginning is epic, and the climax is hearing what it must be like to see a thunderbird in flight.
The low pacing and overall serene settings prevent life from truly manifesting itself, but maybe that's just my opinion :D
If nothing happens - nothing can progress.
