I bought a bottle of 4711. I remember it from my childhood. I was with my mom and sister and we took turns trying the cologne. It was the first perfume I ever tried, and it smelled divine and wonderfully fresh, we all were thrilled. I remember my dad standing in the doorway and watching us smiling benevolently with a look "My girls♥️" on his face. It still smells fantastic! 4711 is a classic with reason. The Bottle is gorgeous too.
Cologne is widely loved and never disliked. It brings happiness, vitality, and cleanliness. I’m curious why a long lasting cologne hasn’t been made yet, especially with advanced science and natural like fragrance compositions.
Good points! Now that I'm here in Spain, people use Hierbas de Ibiza. I reminds me of 4711. It's their Eau de Cologne. A person told me that when she was young, her parents would splash it on the kids after a day at the beach and comb their hair with it and freshen up before heading home.
While not strictly cologne-style due to lack of strong citrus, Guerlain’s Aqua Allegoria Nerolia Vetiver is an incredible fresh neroli in my opinion that does a cologne’s job.
Napoleon used to bring cases of cologne on his military campaigns. He would empty bottles over his head every day, and even took a huge supply to Elba when in exile. I'm not that bad, but I have always had a bottle of 4711 near me. It just makes me happy to splash some on in the afternoon and works better than a cup of tea. A few weeks ago I bought 10ml. of Guerlain's eau do cologne, just to see how my favorite house would do it. Result? The Guerlain was a bit smoother and nicer, but since their was no way I could afford to bathe in the stuff, it was strangely less fun to use. Cheapness may have unexpected virtues.
I've owned a 500ml bottle of 4711. It's a classic for a reason! Love the stuff. I own a few EDCs that I feel do offer some upgrade in nuance and longevity (Villoresi's is very nice, in particular, and can be had for fair prices), but they only offer incremental improvement on 4711.
Great to see you have ADP Colonia in your wardrobe now. One of my all -time favorites. Regarding calling men's fragrances, "perfume," I took to calling it perfume because of you--a masculine man I respect. Otherwise, I have always called it cologne being a straight man, and often do. So, I now call them both.
I recall travelling on intercity buses in Turkey in the 80’s, where every hour or so a gentleman would walk through the bus, splashing 4711 in the palms of passengers to splash on the face. Very refreshing on a very warm bus with no air conditioning. Everyone smelt of 4711.
One of my favourite Cologne type fragrance is O de Lancôme, launched in 1969, it’s very unisex and lasts a good while, I have both vintage and modern and they’re the same to my nose. Dior Eau de Cologne Fraiche launched in 1952 is another amazing unisex fragrance.
I once had a conversation with a woman in marketing at Acqua di Parma. She explained that both the colonias and the older colonia concentrees in the brown bottles are EDPs at 80%. But given that some customers were confused when they bought brown bottles that smelled nothing like "cologne", they decided to put that series in black bottles and change the nomenclature to eau de parfum to avoid further customer confusion. Nevertheless, she said even the colonias, like the original, are eau de parfum concentration, but they want to keep the EDT/cologne association because of the style of fragrance rather than the concentration of the juice.
Awesome! I picked up an 800 ml splash bottle for $53 CAD. It's a great scent but mainly I wanted an 800 ml bottle in my collection! Mugler Cologne and Trumper are excellent as well.
If you can, please try Eight & Bob's Memoires de Mustique. Sweet neroli-citrus masterpiece. Also, I love Mugler Cologne too. Wish it was brought back in EDP concentration
Hi Pep. Loving this topic & your take on it. The comments have been fun & informative too. One of my favourite colognes is Eau Dynamisante by Clarins. It's great but pricey... Your points about pricing are so relevant to cologne as it will always have to be more liberally applied & frequently. I shall be revisiting 4711 to see how I like it now after not trying it for years. My favourite Aqua de Parma is Colonia Intense but it irritates my skin. Any chance you could do a feature on popular fragrances which people find irritating on the skin. For a 'cologne' to do that seems contradictory to its category. Thanks for a great video.
I used to have a girlfriend who wore everything Clarins including ED, I really didn't like it back then. Fast forward to now, I love it on me! For me it's all in the application, where to spray and not too heavy on the sprays but boy what a fragrance. So glad it's off the radar.🤔😳

Greetings Pep! Also a big fan of Mugler Cologne-sad to hear about its discontinuation. Thankfully, I sampled Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Neroli Vetiver at a duty free and felt it would be a worthy substitute-less synthetic overall with intensified namesake notes and increased longevity. Will be getting a bottle once my final MC bottle expires.
I bought 4711 many years ago when I found out that Tom Ford’s Neroli Portofino was inspired by it, right down to the colours they used. What a glorious classic.
Excellent, an oft bypassed option on wearing some of the classics out there. As with the EDC of Chanel No5 it's my favourite version, just like Caleche Edc which has a frankincense note in which I don't detect in the edt or perfume. The EDC of Caleche is far from powdery and soapy. Another EDC which I think suits me better than the edt or perfum versions is Shalimar with it's opoponax and civet base where the EDC sits mostly on my skin. Really interesting insights, thanks for doing this.
🍋🌿🌼💛 I'm with you on overcoming the stigma of english men referring to their fragrance as perfume. Cause....that's what it is. 🤭 (See the french language) It's like men exclusively referring to tables as desks. Tables are obviously only for women. 😆 C'est ridicule.
For what it's worth, I saw it pointed out the other day that the inverse of the alcohol content is not necessarily the % of perfume oil because it fails to take into account preservatives, coloring, water, etc. That had never occurred to me but does seem correct. That said, you are probably still in the ballpark. Regardless, I thoroughly endorse your advice not to pay much, if any, attention to the. concentration. It's a fool's errand!
