- Here is a bonus round/winners circle segment from Pyramid game show where a blind contestant plays for $10,000. Charlie Siebert gives out the clues. Dick Clark hosts.
I love that even way back then Dick Clark knew enough to ask if he was allowed to pet her dog before he did it. Everyone should take note of how to act around a service dog.
I met him one at an event with basset hounds. He told me about his!

Charlie Siebert was on of the best clue givers on any version of Pyramid. Shelly Smith was another one.

The reason that the Pyramid was so successful for the past 40 years was because this show had "heart". Letting all of America see the brilliance of blind contestants is just part of it's legacy and proof that this show was light-years ahead of it's time. Dick Clark and Bill Cullen were the perfect hosts for this show. They connected with the celebrities, contestants and the viewers and controlled the game in a masterful way. TV shows nowadays lack "heart" and decency and class. Pyramid rocks !

Bill Cullen had polio at an early age and had a walking disability as a result. He had some understanding.

Charlie was one of the best on this show..... and his reactions were great when his partner won

I second the person who said Bill Cullen and Dick Clark were perfect hosts for Pyramid. I loved seeing when they’d play the game on the other versions. They’re a credit to Philadelphia! Watching this clip and seeing Dick asking if he can pet the dog reminded me of how he treated the acts on Bandstand.. He treated all the contestants the same way. He never talked down to anyone. Pure class.
A good round, she's a solid player. And I'm happy Dick Clark knew the etiquette for support animals, good on him!
I'm not being rude or funny here at all....I swear....but what do U mean by
"animals" ? all I saw was a blind woman. info please....and again, I'm NOT being a smart ass...
"Support animals" = animals that help the visually handicapped manipulate the world. Seeing-eye dog in this case. For example, it's rude to pet a person's dog without their permission ANYWAY, but it can send the wrong message to a support animal very directly.
What I said has really nothing to do with the player here.
TheBryan3081 At the end of the clip you can hear Dick Clark ask if it's permissible to pet the contestant's dog and she says yes. Then I think I hear him say "we have 4 dogs, three of them sort of black labs," and the contestant's BF says they do, too. :-)
If you look closely at the beginning of the video, you can see a seeing-eye dog, which helps her get around. There is etiquette to use while that kind of dog is in harness, which means the dog is working (actually working, on a job) and is not to be petted or otherwise distracted, which could endanger the blind/ visually- impaired person. If the dog is taken out of its harness, it can be petted or spoken to, IF the person consents. Perhaps that helps?

I remember on one of the $25K weeks, Dick was conflicted on whether to refer to them as blind or visually impaired. IIRC, Henry Polic II said he liked "visually challenged," which was the first time I'd heard "challenged" to refer to a disability. At one point, Dick asked one of the contestants how he called himself, and he said, "Blind as a bat."

The rules of the show were that you try for 10 your first time in the winner's circle on a show, try for a total of 25 in the second try on a single show, and if you have one of three of the fastest times in the season, you come back for the tournament to try for an additional $100,000. No cheat, just an extension of the $25,000 Pyramid for the syndicated show. The champion was whomever had the most winner's circle money on the day, with co-champions as necessary.
Blind people have a right to participate in game shows. I mean, if they can play the game, know the rules or in short, if they can do it, let them play. Whether it's Family Feud, Match Game, Tic Tac Dough, Joker's Wild, Password, Jeopardy, or this one, Pyramid, they are just as good as those that are not visually impaired.
There was a blind contestant on Jeopardy and he became a champion and participated in the tournament of champions!!

He also participated in the Million Dollar Masters Tournament in 2002, the $2 million Ultimate Tournament of Champions in 2005, and the $1 million Battle of the Decades in 2014; and didn't make it past the first round of each; the good news was that he didn't have to play against Brad Rutter (who won ALL THREE of those) or Ken Jennings.

That's why, even as a dog lover like myself, you don't touch service dogs. Similar thing happened with a blind contestant on Card Sharks. All the things going on, dog didn't move a muscle.
@@michaelfalkner1186 The only time when you can touch a service dog is when the harness is off of the dog's neck and if you ask the blind person's permission.

Alex Townsend That he was...believe it or not, I was watching his Junior Partner Pyramid you tube, I made a comment about one of the young contestants trying too hard!!! One of the contestants that was 12 at the time, e-mailed me back. Besides never talking down to any of the blind contestants, when regular ones weren't doing well, he always told them that you are trying too hard.
That sounds like Dick Clark to me. He let the contestants show pictures of their kids or their dogs which I thought was sweet. He gave the contestants the rub down before the Winning Circle if they seemed nervous. I love that.
Alex Townsend He also let the celebrities know to move faster to at least have the contestant win $10k/$25k/ etc, and I can tell he wants the contestants to win, regardless of the game.
+Brent O'Brien Was this the first time Dick had a contestant on the show who was blind/sight impaired, deaf/hearing impaired, or had speech disabilities, or had such contestants been on the show before?

Sometimes the judge buzzes stuff that I think shouldn't be buzzed, but is "a ton" a thing that is heavy? It's what something weighs but isn't something that is heavy. I'm still glad she won.

Good for her showing her unscripted skill and ability to a huge live audience and proving her intellect back then.
Only if you ask the owner of a "Guide Dog" and it is OK otherwise it is a no no to pet a guide dog since the dog is on duty consistantly.
Except at home. Typically, the guide dog is off duty when in the house. That said even then, it’s probably still best to ask permission.

I'm 17, so I do come from a different generation, one that jumps to conclusions a little too quickly about others. "Physically challenged" shows people that I don't need help as much as they might think, and the term is a good way to show that people with disabilities can be put on a level playing field. I understand your comment, but I have never really felt comfortable with putting my disability at the front of a conversation. Thanks for the comment, though
i really wanna see a full show from blind contestants week and too bad they never got a chance to do it on $25,000 Pyramid (eventho it was planned in 1988)
Weeks with Blind Contestants: CBS $25k: 8/22-26/83 (after 8/22), 4/13-17/87 (full week) Clark $100k: 10/19-23/87. Don't know if $10k/$20k had them.
Well, if you know a person very well, you may spend time with them in their homes when their dog is off-duty, and then it is often OK to pet the dog, or play with it. It really depends on the individual person.

sight is not required to win that $10,000 anyways, it takes listening skills there. she did beautifully.

I have cerebral palsy and am confined to a wheelchair. Unless a small child is talking to me, I usually don't like people to call me "handicapped" or "disabled." I always describe myself as "physically challenged." That's a positive way to put it.

They had to do a special week for visual impairment, though, because the contestant would never be able to give the clues for obvious reasons. On the traditional show, there were times that the contestant would have to give. The celebrity may also use audio clues as to if the person was getting close in the winner's circle, which otherwise required head nods.
What did they do for the blind contestants, when they had to give the clues? I haven’t got any ideas…?
During each main game,
the two people would actually switch chairs so that they were now doing opposite their role at the start of the game.

On J!, they eliminate all "visual" material and give the blind/sight-disadvantaged contestant a braille readout of all the categories in each round in advance.
And switch out the electronics so that instead of using a pen to write their Final Jeopardy! response, they could type in on a Braille keyboard.
@@gameshowguy2000 I remember watching this week of Pyramid on GSN. In one of the episodes, they had a discrepancy with one of the Mystery 7 prizes. It had to be changed.
2000 pounds is heavy if you are talking in terms of carrying it or pushing it with your bare hands.
Now I'm wondering how she read the clues during the regular part of the game. I'm guessing they just had braille available to her.

What about the first part of the show where they take turns reading the clues to each other? How did they handle that? Or did they just have the blind contestant for this bonus round?
Tic Tac Dough, Jeopardy (video questions), and some others simply do not lend themselves to reasonable accomodation of visual impairment. Even this show had to create a separate "island" because of the need to alter the rule about who gives clues. I suppose with modern technology so sort of braille system could be instituted, but I can see already controversies and well as technical difficulties.

The sighted celebrities gave all the clues in the basic game, rather than the contestants having to at least once give clues.
Today with ADA, I can imagine game shows will eventually have to drop visual clues and add sign language translators in some cases. There would still be the issue of fully-sensing people having an advantage, but we're not at Harrison Bergeron wokeness quite yet. Wheel of Fortune might be able to escape having to automate the wheel by claiming the actual spinning of it is inherently part of the game. It didn't work for golf in saying walking over using carts was part of the game, but Wheel would have a better case.
He should've gotten buzzed for a ton. That's not a heavy thing, it's a unit of weight.
Just try lifting a ton and you'll realize how heavy it is.

Celebs always gave clues when blind people were playing. I think the only blind contestants on the show were on during special weeks like this one and one or two other weeks done on $25K. DOn't know much about if the technology has changed in the 25 years as to whether blind contestants could give clues on Pyramid or not.
and if nothing else, Dick could have a printout in braile that he could have handed the contestant

These subjects were fairly easy to guess for the Pyramid.
There's just something wrong about "a ton" for "Things that are heavy" - Can't put my finger on it though..
I had the same initial feeling, but "a ton" and "heavy" are not both units of measure. Maybe if he said "a ton of bricks".....But I don't think by their standards it was an illegal clue.
There are several Pyramid videos where it appears the contestant has won, but Dick and/or judges disallows the win after a clue was found to be illegal.
@DISCOVEGASGUYPyramid is great yes, but I disagree with your opinion about TV today. I think there is a lot of Heart and Decency and class in TV! Yes, it's not everywhere, but you have to know where to look!

There are Braille displays that are pretty fast, which people use as computer monitors. Not all blind people read Braille, though, generally just people who are blind from a very young age, and cannot see much other than light perception. Educators prefer things like CCTVs for low-vision readers. Obviously, that wouldn't work on the show. Braille cards, which is what would have been needed before displays, ran the risk of giving away words ahead of time.
I'm surprised this show hasn't been banned because of the term Eskimo.
Kief was one of the best. She was the only one to win the $100,000 by giving.

If I'm not mistaken, even if the other contestant wasn't blind, were they allowed to give the clues, or was it always the celebs?
It was very rare that a contestant would give clues in the winners circle, but it did happen a few times a year.
It is a choice by the contestant to give or receive. Usually they receive the clues.

Really? you must be a different generation. I know lots of people who use wheelchairs, who think syllable-heavy terms are silly. I used to work for an agency that provided respite care. I tried not to use generic terms, like "disabled," & just describe the situation. You have CP and use a chair. That is what I would say. If I were setting up something for you, I'd just note that you needed wheelchair accommodations, whether or not it was a power chair, & whether you needed transfer aid.
Was it her boyfriend who pet the dog? When someone knows the dog well, it's a little different. How different depends on the individual blind person, and the relationship with the other person, because all blind people sort of fine-tune, and "personalize" their dogs. I know a Deaf-blind person whose dog alerts her to a familiar person approaching, so she likes her close friends & important co-workers to briefly greet her dog to maintain their familiarity.
Sighted people saying she is an inspiration, just because she is blind, are also discriminating.
Blind people are flat out amazing. I think what they sat about other senses being heightened is absolutely true.
