  • Unexpected Stories From a Hacker Who Made it Inside the Government by Peiter Mudge Zatko
Having had the opportunity to see things from within the hacker community and from a senior position in the DoD, Mudge has some enlightening stories to share, and is picking some of his favorites. He'll discuss Julian's story to him about US government involvement in the origins of Wikileaks, how the DoD accidentally caused Anonymous to target government systems, some of the ways in which the defense industrial base's poor security works financially in its favor, and cases where the government missed opportunities for positive outreach and understanding with this community.
You'll probably recognize parts of these stories from the news, but there are origins and back stories that are lesser known, and that should make for a good story time.

Coming back to watch this after Mudge went full whistle-blower on Twitter, and I'm struck with how unsurprised I am at the choice to call them out given some of these stories. Man is a saint, and the elite of the elite. Hope he comes out the other side intact.

Mudge is a capitalist, he took the hefty sum of bait from Elon's Lawyer which will help Elon reverse out of the deal to buy Twitter.

He's not a saint. He turns up to run damage control when they get caught out. Read my comments on Jack Wheeler / Barnaby Jack..

18:00-19:00. Spot on, spot on. I know nothing of the hacker community (other than most using that title are petty little wannabes) but, this man knows his stuff and has a very objective viewpoint. All I can say is we should be glad to have people like this on our side when shit goes down for real. I used to have an idealistic viewpoint that none of this cyberspace would matter but, now i realize it will. I'll be there to deal with the public utilities while Mudge and his benevolent clan of gray hats keep the lines of communication clear! Ask yourself, What's your role? What do you stand for?

Great presentation. The stories are nice. The messages Mudge shares by telling these stories is important, and fundamental. Good work!

Brendan O'Connor standing calmly behind mudge being a CFT grant recipient put a huge smile on my face. if anyone hasn't seen it: watch "stalking a city for fun and frivolity". one of the best talks I have seen in recent years

Mudge doesn't say much. When he does say something, its best to listen.

Yeah speaking at Defcon and dropping a veiled threat to anyone thinking of following Barnaby Jack's research into pace makers, was not at all subtle. Jack Wheeler was Barnaby Jack's contact in the DOD. Messed up.

Peter is an amazing person and one of the good guys. I'm glad guys like him are still trying to make a positive impact on the world at large outside of the technology space. We have few people in the hacker community with his vision and intelligence outside of bits and bytes. Hopefully Google will be better off for having him.

saying to a hacker living in their mom’s basement.(no literally living in, you think hoarders are bad, hey wont ever even show their pit of putrid filth and certainly but not exclusively hentai when you're dating one, well..tried too....more so)
“Cut your hair, quit smoking dope come work for us make something yourself” LOL I love that line........ you could do just do the last one of those things and be fine.....

31:06 - an attitude far too prevalent in the business/govt/religion realms "If you give up all your personal ideals and motives and conform to this nice little box we made for you; you're going to go far. Until then you'll just be a long haired, dope-smokin' dirtbag rebel..."

Someone should create a remedy for the trojan that targets computers in Hospitals and medical institutions. It basically gets into PCs in vital parts of the hospital and says it is going to lock the computer down and not allow access until a sum money (lowest I heard they were ransomning for was $5000 US and up to and over 10K) was transferred into a bank account, and there is no way you are going to NOT pay it when you (or other people) are in a life or death situation. Literally there was a couple of cases where a guy was on the operating table getting his life saved, and they need to look at the procedural information and drug info on whatever medical resource web database they used, and the computer got locked down and they had no choice but to pay the ransom money.. Now I don't know what the rest of you think, but when you are starting to deal with people's lifes, that is the lowest of the low, and these people or people(s) deserve to be caught. I'm sure guys like this could have the whole case wrapped up in under 6 months.

Why is it that very smart people have such awful personalities. Jokes unfunny and badly timed, monotone voices to put you to sleep. I just couldn't continue with this presentation as much as I tried
