    Im watching this video almost 10 years after it was made. Thanks to defcon for posting it and thanks to TH-cam for actually keeping it up and not censoring it... yet.
    Oh my, have times changed. These videos are like little time capsules and im so happy to have them here.

    The piracy detector van is a nod to the BBC's "television detector van" which doesn't even exist but whose details are still an Official Secret...

    • @vylbird8014
      @vylbird8014 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      They existed. The BBC just hugely exaggerated the scale of their use in order to scare people into compliance.

    Cool point about how "asking for Priscilla" might actually be a way to see which things people are reading.

    really enjoying the way Jason speaks. His facts are super interesting and so relevant to understanding where we are at today.

    I have a copy of the "pirate notices" collection referenced at the end of the talk, and it's quite an entertaining dive to go through. Would love to see a talk dedicated just to that.

    i saw the meme 22:29 and i couldn't stop laughing - not only because i found it funny - but because i realized that back in the day it was funny, and a few years later it wasn't anymore, and recently it came back to being funny for different reasons.

    if your service is worse than what pirates get, then people will pirate. The solution isn't anti piracy measures or yet more anti consumer crap, but better services. Take yt premium. You can 'download' videos, but still need internet to ask for permission to play it. Or ubisoft's allways online bs even for singleplayer games. Or apple's everything. I don't deal with those companies anymore or use adblockers and download whatever I want to watch offline in a normal video format that I can play whenever. I'd pay if I got value and not be treated like scum.

    As I watch you start to explain software and piracy, I can't help but wonder why it is that all libraries have copying machines. The irony is too much for me to remain laughing while not on the floor.

      Because it useless ugly and buggy amateurish garbage most of the time. Software is just a tool, and you don't wan't skimp on it if it's a tool of your trade.
      And even if there is a lot people behind some Open Source project it doesn't make competetive or good for end user. GIMP and OpenOffice will never reach quality and usabilty of Photoshop and Microsoft Office(even though it's bloated and almost unsable as it is, it's still better than crooked and buggy OO)
