Timmy I think I can explain the gooey/ hammy taste to the meat. Asian cooking uses a technique called "velveting" to tenderize sliced meat before cooking....after slicing meats baking soda is liberally sprinkled over the meat and it is left to sit about 15 minutes then rinsed off....meat is coated in seasoning and cornstarch prior to using/stir fry/ deep fry. What probably happened is they left the baking soda on too long and/ or didn't rinse it off the meat completely ( which will give that ham/smoke taste) The baking soda will turn your meat from tenderized to glue if left on too long as it breaks the meat fibers down ❤😁
Well explained. Yeah, that could be the case or it’s just really really cheap meat or undercooked which can happen but how you explained it makes sense, I guess.
Omg wish I had seen this a few hours ago.. as I found a recipe for stir fry and tried the velveting or however you spell it, technique tonight. About to cook it now! Hope it turns about out 😂
@@user-pc2ql8rk1w How'd it turn out? If you use velveting properly, you can replicate asian dishes at home, so easily. No more eating-out on Chinese for us after we figured it out.

I'd love to see you eat some tteokbokki, kimchi jjigae and gimbap made by a Korean ajumma. Some Vietnamese Pho or Bun bo hue with some Bánh cuốn or Banh mi. I'm proud of you for trying a mushroom again even if you know you don't like them. Sometimes it's worth trying things again, because you never know if your taste buds have changed or not!
We used to have such a good Chinese restaurant near where I lived in the Chicago suburbs in the 90s and 2000s. It wasn't just a buffet, but they had a buffet. No processed food, everything fresh and delicious. They had the best fried rice and egg rolls. The entrees on the buffet varied, so it would be a little surprise what they'd have when you went in. But it was always so good. I think they closed around 2008 or so, I don't even live in that area anymore but I still miss it so much. Other Chinese buffets don't even come close. 💔 RIP to The Orient restaurant.
The licorice flavor was probably coming from a spice called star anise. It's very common in a lot of Asian cuisines. They might have gone a bit too far with it.
Chinese Buffet, I always went at least 4 times a year, but now I'm sad, because the last couple of times it was less than stellar. Now it's been closed down for the last year. I really am broken hearted over it!! I was glad when you really enjoyed an item, but there really weren't many, were there? The first cream puff was like a Doctor Pimple Popper moment...yucky! You Timmy, you were fantastic as always, you always shine! I absolutely love the all the sound affects and the affects you do to your face...too funny!! 😆 Love ya, Timmy!!! 👍👍
Chinese Buffet Day woot! Like any buffet you try things and find things you enjoy among things you don’t enjoy. I can’t believe they had bad lo mein and fried rice. Those are like staples. Shocking 😳 Your reaction is so relatable!! Timmy I am so happy! Timmy I just adore you! ❤
Chinese buffet is a family favorite! I love the white noodles. The dish at my local restaurant is called Chow Mei Fun. I’m not sure if it is called that at all restaurants or not, but it is so delicious! The Chinese doughnuts are easy to make at home. They are literally canned biscuits fried and rolled in regular white sugar. That way you are sure not to get that old oil taste. Most Chinese buffets I’ve been to make excellent pork dishes, and those chicken wings (fried and sauced) are addictive! This challenge was great, and I would really like to see similar ones in the future! Kudos for being so sensitive to culture and the feelings of the staff at the restaurant. It’s not necessarily rude to remove a mouthful of food. They understand if something isn’t always perfectly edible. You might have found a tiny bit of bone or cartilage in the chicken or something. Human error can happen in any kitchen. It was typical kind-hearted Timmy to not want to be rude or unappreciative. ❤
The moment I saw that mushroom and then hear, "I don't like mushrooms." ... I internally cringed and said out loud "Oh no, honey. Don't do it. You're gonna spit that out." The small button mushrooms that come with Chinese food are usually the ones with the slimiest texture and earthiest (dirty) flavor out of all. They're one of the worst, and this is coming from someone who likes mushrooms. Thanks for these videos, I absolutely adore them!
I also have a really yummy hack.If you take the chinese donuts which is a biscuit with sugar I take 2 when they are fresh and I take a scoop of the Vanilla Ice cream that they usually have and put it right on top. It is so good. You should definitely try it.
I would love to see you trying various cuisine buffets for 24 hours. It seemed like the Chinese buffet had the same selections at each location. Always fun watching either way. 😊
