- Coven - The White Witch Of Rose Hall (1969)
Jinx Dawson was a native of Indianapolis, Indiana who began studying opera and the occult in the late 1960s. She, Ross, and Osborne formed Coven in Chicago in the late 1960s. In 1967 to 1968 they toured on concert bills with Jimmy Page's Yardbirds, the then glam band Alice Cooper, and Vanilla Fudge, among many others. Jinx began and ended each Coven concert with the sign of the horns, being the first to introduce this hand sign into rock pop culture. They were signed to Mercury Records, where they put out their first album, Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls in 1969. The music on the album was hard rock psychedelia; what made it distinctive was the heavy emphasis on diabolical subject matter, including songs such as "The White Witch of Rose Hall" (based on the story of Annie Palmer), "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge", and "Dignitaries of Hell". The album concluded with a 13 minute track of chanting and Satanic prayers called "Satanic Mass" (written by their producer, Bill Traut, of Dunwich Productions). Also included inside the album, was Coven's infamous Black Mass poster, showing members of the group displaying the sign of the horns as they prepared for a Satanic ritual over the naked altar. This is the first photographed use of the Horned Hand Salute and the Inverted Cross in rock music pop culture, Coven being the first occult rock band and the pioneers in that genre. (They also hold the distinction of making one of the first "rock videos" to the title track of their third album, "Blood on the Snow" in 1974, seven years before MTV started in the 1981.)
According to Jinx, "The satanic thing actually was something we were interested in and were studying at the time. When you're younger, you're looking for answers" Not arf.
Her voice is just astounding, strong vocal cords on this woman. What an amazing gem of its time.
The devil she could call hahaha
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. I love it.
It’s so classic sounding. A timeless piece of music
Coven is easily among my top five favorite bands/music artists, of all time. The sound, the themes, the fact that they are one of the few truly gifted creators of authentic Witch music... I only have one word.. Wondrous!
I'm pleasantly blown away by this band. I've only recently discovered them. Jinx's voice is definitely the best thing about all of it. And the lyrics of course
She has some powerful vocals . I was born early/mid 80's and recall seeing this album cover on my dad's vinyl record collection lol . he was into the less "main stream" love hippy b.s he was a multi combat tour Vietnam veteran . My folks weren't around much but they were cool as far as letting me listen to the music I liked and dress the way I want . as long as my grades were good and I was starting on my football abd basketball team I could do whatever I pleased . it turned out good the "devil music" didn't turn me into a homeless junkie lol .
I have been play bass guitar in metal for 40 years now & this is the first tiem I have herad of this band DAMN!!! & I like them
So wonderful. It gives me chills.. Ty ❤
This entire album (minus the Black Mass performance) is just RIPE for bands to do covers of it's songs! I don't know why more Stoner Rock/Metal and Doom Metal bands don't attempt to cover some of these songs. It'd be cool to hear these songs with a heavier and fuzzier sound. Maybe there are some out there already that I don't yet know about.
A reenactment of the Mass could be entertaining,
You could be right. I've also heard the Anton LaVey version from the late 60's. I don't know if anyone else has recorded it.
***** That would be cool!
+Brian Reddish THEY DONT COVER BECAUSE THEY NEVER HEARD OF COVEN.
MOST UNDERRATED ROCK BAND EVER.
Josh Fields I agree with you in that regard. Jinx's performance, especially, could never be completely duplicated. Mainly just as a tribute and also for letting those who are uninitiated know about their amazing music.
This is my first time hearing Coven and you can literally hear every metal band in the music and Jinx's vocals. I'm in actual tears and I don't know why.
I can LITERALLY hear Iron Maiden. If anyone says that Coven isn't the genesis of metal as we know it now they're a goddamn liar.
That’s Ms Jinx Dawson for you! This band most definitely inspired maiden with the uplifting sounding chord progressions, and giving a nice feel to storyline songs
Jimx vocals are like so... perfect
Shit
It's not satanic because Sabbath was never serious about it like Coven. The whole idea for the Black Sabbath doom-and-gloom and horror themes came because Geezer Butler noticed people lined up to see Mario Bava's movie Black Sabbath at a theater across from their inn. They just wanted to be the "horror movies" of music. It's all an act, and most Sabbath songs have nothing to do with horror or occult themes.
Love the feeling in her voice :3
I kinda hear Greace Slick in her voice, their cool :) like a darker version of Jef Air Plane.
Yeaah most def. XD
+Alvaro Picasso you mean the the satanic version of Jefferson airplane
it may feel good but it's demonic
really? religion has u afraid people... fuckn wake up!! its just music, the devil does not give a fuck about it.. if he really existed as a person, u are ure own demon... dont blame it on music
I have a cat named Aurora, this is her favorite song. Anytime I play this over my speaker she comes running into my room to lay on my bed and chill with me.
Wen interessiert's, wer zuerst war? Ist einfach toll gute Musik zu hören...
Amo esta canción ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I NEED a whole brand new album that sounds really like this. I'de fucking give my money, for real.
proves that gene simmons didn't invent the horn sign, john lennon even before these guys
Ronnie James Dio
@@steliosfr he didn't invent it either, John lennon didn't either but its one of the earliest pictures of a musician doing it.
and Jinx Dawson is still hot as hell.
Hail the White Sorceress. She is the Oracle of Witchcraft.
@Raelspark Yes, his name is Oz Osbourne, but it's not to be confused with Ozzy Osbourne, from Black Sabbath.
In fact, Coven also has a song named Black Sabbath.
And Black Sabbath, just to make things clear, came AFTER Coven, so... It seems like we have a case of copy here. :)
The devil,she could call...
Valéria Menezes watching on TH-cam the great satanic rock high mass
The first queen of What would become Metal
Im fan of blues rock and hard rock muisc this band named coven is scary spooky muisc .
This Band is Soo Cool for the day that they came out!! Very Contrivecial! = Nothing nowadays!
They made Satanism Vouge! What is Really Cool is that they play the negative "Devils Chords" throughout this song!
This is such a cool forgotten band of the later 60's!
Shit, I need to find this album.
Never knew that this group who had the huge hit "One tin soldier" (from the movie Billy Jack) had so many songs---never found any of their records in my crate digging
Ozzy Osbourne was already called des-time school. And Geezer took the name "Black Sabbath" a movie that was in theaters, just to be clear.
This is scary sounding song by the band coven hard rock and blues rock.
God that was a long time ago To JIX"S I hope your well blessings )O(
Great Song
Jinx is not a Satanist and never was. Her Family are Wiccians or People that practiced Black Magic.
Sounds a little bit like the singer who sang Venus
Jinx was only 18 years old here!
can someone upload one of the coven s music videos ?
🖤🤘
Mother of black metal
The white witch of Rose Hall,
The devil she could call.
Mother Ruthford come one day,
Into Montego Bay.
The great house,
An accountant man.
Annie Palmer had to have this man
The white witch of Rose Hall,
A beauty above all.
The slaves out in the fields
Had brothers who were killed.
This obeah made the spirits rise,
Destroying the unwanted with her eyes.
By night in the black
When she did rise,
Anyone in her path would die.
Robert met Millicent one fine day,
Now the girl stood in Annie's way.
Her life meant nothing without his love.
But she couldn't bear the evil of...
The white witch of Rose Hall
The devil she could call.
Robert's love then denied.
The blame Annie denied.
But the father
Of this dead slave girl
Casted Annie from his world.
The white witch of Rose Hall.
The devil she could call.

The bassist is named Oz Osbourne??
Yes
The more I look into Coven, the more obvious it is that Black Sabbath stole a lot of their stylings. I still love Ozzy and Black Sabbath, but...not cool, guys.
His name is Greg Osbourne, not "Oz" Oz was his nickname.
@@sprouting_lady black Sabbath didnt stole shit.
@deadvoguestar You know that the name for the band came from a italian movie with Sabbath in the name right and that nobody knew who TF was Coven at the time.
just to be clear more so, coven came before black sabbath by a couple months BUT their music was so satanic for that time and black sabbath are not satanic at all! and also before kiss, DIO, and all others the guys in the band WERE years before to do what is now known as the devil horn sign!
Was this the Band Who did one tin soldier?
Very bizarrely enough....yes, it is.
Who said it wasn't satanic? It's fucking awesome though!
@Fetusluxan jinx dawson RULZ!!!
She sounds like Grace Slick
i think so
Chords are F G Am in the verse
xhT
Wow, this seems so quaint, almost boring today. And that makes it interesting.
@Nguli34689 yeah it wasn't
Ozzy's real is John
Charles Manson spoiled things
That's what we need, "grown up's playing halloween to try to impress 17 year old kids with their 666 and sign of the beast b.s.
