- A quick review on our experience with Hen Saddles. We love them and have found them to be extremely helpful for many of our girls whether it be for protection from treading by a rooster, a molt or a bully situation! I've found that my ratty old pot holders make great hen saddles. They only require adding the elastic after cutting the notches for wings & a quick trip through the sewing machine. They're a good size and are already quilted/padded. Recycling at its best.
I've never heard of hen saddles before- this looks like a fantastic idea.
Hello: If I had chicks I could open the Singer pedal sewing machine and make some of those. I was refilling the bobbin and rethreading the machine when I was 7 years old for granny. If it was mechanical I had to find out how it was put together and how it worked. When I was 5 I had a toy Doctors bag, I thought if granny got sick I could operate on her and make her better. Thank goodness granny didn't get that sick.
One of our chickens have started plucking on all the rest and one got to the point of being bare on the back she and another have been separated and we are so going to get these
So my takeaway: hens are the OG Mean Girls, and HR needs to have a talk with roosters about “no means no.”

Do they effect mobility? I have Hawks that like to visit, girls have to be real agile.

I saw some hen saddles online that had huge eyes printed on the back (upward facing side) so as to scare off predatory birds. Don't know if it works or not.
