    The Fouch-o-matic Off Grid family is so great, they are doing it for real. Nick is building their house and they all 5 live in a yurt. Wonderful family. One of my favorite channels!

    We had a buff orphington rooster, he ended up in the stock pot. One day he decided to attack my daughter and that was it. The buff hens are so sweet, I have one. Next time I'm going to get mostly buff orphington hens, they are nice sized birds. Thanks for all the good information, I love your fresh farm egg sign that's behind you.

    Thank you for sharing your homestead experiences! I enjoy your videos very much. I look forward to your next topic and hope it is on quail, I've seen the one's you have made and am interested to hear how they fit into your homestead (eggs, vs. meat vs. novelty).

    Such great info! You are a wealth of information! I'll have to try the tote nesting box idea for my hens that like more privacy. Cheers!

    Great information. We had hens that roosted at our house growing up (they belonged to the neighbors) but I do not remember much about the specifics. I am going to share this video with my sister since she will be getting chickens before my husband and I do. We hope to make the drive over to TN for your conference. We are knowledgeable in many areas but there are definitely areas that we are lacking first hand experiences. I already watch Fouch-O-Matic, great channel!

    Thank you Patara for the advice on nesting boxes. Have you ever opened the lid and saw a snake in there? I just ask cause I have walked in my fathers hen house and saw one in a nesting box. In his hen house the nesting boxes were made of wood. I love the idea of easy cleaning. Thank you for the video I really enjoy learning from your channel.

    We free range our chickens and a rooster is a must!. He protects the flock and if any predators come around I know it because he starts going nuts if anybody messes with his girls. He is not overly aggressive when I pick up a hen but does come over and sounds off.

    My rooster is a Buff, name is Orppy, got him from a neighbor with 1 hen at age 1 yr. The neighbors hens were being picked off, that is all they had left. Since I got him he has been mean to me, respects my som & now my husband. I have put up with him for about 4 yrs. Had a beautiful buff baby that was a rooster filling out, Coyote got him! Hoping for another rooster. I have 2 more roosters that are nice to me, bantam silky & bantam cross.

    Patara, would LOVE to see the broody stall you were talking about. I'm getting broody girls and need to create an area in my barn, but unsure how to do it without trapping them in. Thanks! Love the channel! Keep it up!!!

    I have Bielefelders. Very nice chickens with very gentle roosters. I use those totes for my egg boxes. They work great!

    Not a fan of using plastic boxes but see the appeal. If you are going to cut holes in them make sure that at each corner you drill a half inch hole first and then cut out between them to make your door. The half inch holes will make a radius at the corners that stop them from developing cracks.

    I could listen to you talk about your chickens and other animals all day. You seem to have a lot of knowledge and passion about them. I have a quick question. How do you keep them cool in the summer? Since Buffs are so big and fluffy is it hard to have them in a place that has a hot and humid summer? I live in NE Arkansas. Thank you and God Bless!

    I'm going to go to Low's and see if I can find the 18 gallon totes. We are going to be starting out with 6 hens in April. Pa says I have to walk before I run. So I'm probably going to get 2 totes? Or should I get 3?

    Hey Patera, do you use the same type of nesting box for your ducks as you do for chickens?

    • @appalachiashomesteadwithpatara

      +Ginger Borgeson I would but... my ducks make a clutch in the corner of their house and lay there.

    I take it you have more than 1 rooster at the farm. My question is: do you allow the roosters to have access with one another?
    If so, are there any issues with that (ex. fighting with one another and territory etc )? And how do you handle those?
    Thanks

    • @appalachiashomesteadwithpatara
      @appalachiashomesteadwithpatara  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +55Herbie1 All of my roosters are together. They have been since hatching. That helps. But sparring can happen. You have to be ready to separate when need be... and when one is overly aggressive, depending on the situation... sometimes that troublemaker has to find a new place or role in life. That's typically if he starts flogging a person...

    • @55Herbie1
      @55Herbie1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean "if he starts flogging a person" and also what changes are made when the "troublemaker has to find a new place or role in life"? Do you send that one away from the farm? Thanks

    • @appalachiashomesteadwithpatara
      @appalachiashomesteadwithpatara  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flogging means attack-he will scratch and or puncture you with his spurs. It is aggressive, fast and can seriously injure someone, especially small children if he can get them in the face. So, if that starts, he goes to a new farm to hopefully chill or becomes dinner either for me or someone else. I have way too many docile roosters to be challenged by one.

    I have a? I have 2 silky roasters. one is in first command and the other is second. they each have their hens and tend to them. however my second in command roaster has recently started attacking us when we enter the coop. my main roaster (1st in command) has the sweetest personality. why would the second in command b attacking us all of a sudden?

    • @appalachiashomesteadwithpatara

      +Angel Balouta That could be a list of reasons... maybe he's jealous... I'd say that has a lot to do with it or... something you are doing. It's hard to know.
