Our Chickens Got SUPER HERO Capes! (hen saddles)

  • Our chickens started getting some bare spots on their backs due to aggressive mating by our rooster. To protect their backs, we got them over the wing hen saddles (also called hen aprons). Watch as we attempt to put them on and see what the chickens think about them!
    *It is normal for chickens to have an adjustment period with hen saddles. By the end of Day 2, all chickens were perfectly adjusted...including purple :0)

    Wow! The hens thought they were being attacked. The rooster was actually trying to protect them. You have a good rooster. When the first hen hid in that little bush I thought that was so cool to watch the rooster checking on what was going on. Chickens are awesome.

      My chickens had a run-in with a fox and one of my hens took off and hid in a shrub just like that chicken was doing. I think a big factor there too is that when chickens get attacked by a predator, it's always on their back. Like hawks coming down from above. I read somewhere that if you are going to reach down and pet a chicken, they will freak out. But if you squat down and reach straight toward then they don't get spooked. Good roosters will fight to the death protecting the hens.

    Poor girls. I felt bad for them. Have you considered keeping the rooster apart for some of the time so the girls don't have to tolerate his rough advances?

    • @Guildbrookfarm
      @Guildbrookfarm  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They were all used to the aprons within 24 hours and the rooster stopped trying to get the aprons off after about 15 minutes. No one is stressed now. Edited to also say he is important to the protection of the flock so we keep him with the girls

    • @artistocracy
      @artistocracy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank goodness everyone is much better, thanks! That is good if the rooster leaves them alone a bit more. Yes, of course he has more than one job to do. Your chook yard is unprotected besides their house (as in no big trees for them to shelter in).

    Perhaps saddles made of an abstract gray on gray pattern or feather patterned fabric would make the saddles less visible to the rooster.

  • @MrsDigiot

    That was so interesting to watch; I've never seen such. I think I would have had all the saddles unsnapped ahead of time to make it easier to place on the hens. It was quite amusing watching the hens race around like that. Thanks for sharing; I love your channel.

    So many people think chickens cannot fly. If they'd ever had to get up in the wee hours of the morning and run around in their pjs trying to catch the ones who flew out of the coop, they'd know better. They tell me I'm lying! We finally chicken wired over the top.

    Very neat. I am always learning something new! Glad your girls are a bit protected! I had no idea that something like this was available! It sure makes sense!

    That...was an interesting experience.. with pretty funny results...lol. I have 9 hens and no rooster. But I have a hen in particular who likes to assert her dominance by jumping on the backs of the other hens. Pulls feathers but obviously not as aggressive as a rooster would. It'll be interesting to see if those saddles solve your issue.
