I was raised Korean with my Korean side. My mother avoids eating too many carbs by mixing her white glutenous rice with different beans, wild rice, and brown rice soaked over night. She also makes her own kimchee to maintain her sodium intake.
I am a high carb person. Give me carbs and low fat. Maybe one bit of fish a day with lots of rice, French fries, fruits, veggies, I lose a ton of weight.
i dont think you have a problem digesting rice. if you cut out the rice you reduce the amount of calories you consume. so you are actually just eating less...thats why you lose weight.
+johnnyboy562 The inability to digest large amounts of rice at once for every meal is indeed a real thing for some Westerners. When I was in Japan, rice would really "stick" to me and it ended up causing me a lot of constipation and some other problems as my body was not used to dealing with so much of it at once. Adding lots of fibre wasn't enough or impractical. However, for me eating as many potatoes as I want is perfectly fine. Funny enough friends can't eat a lot of potatoes I would guess for the opposite reason. Our respective amylase enzymes in our saliva are expecting certain kinds of starch. Eating rice at home for non-Asian families isn't as common in Toronto so I would guess that would be the case for Simon and Martina too. Hope that helps.
waltersumofan not quite. simon and martina said that they had problems digesting rice because when they cut it out it helped them lose alot of weight. the point is to lose weight you must be in a calorie deficit nothing to do with constipation or discomfort as you are refering to. in fact if your body is having issues digesting you should lose more weight as you are not absorbing any macronutrients whatsoever.
+waltersumofan I live in Paraguay, here is common to eat "guiso" for médium to low social class with is basically a lot of rice or noodles with a little bit of meat, I loveit when is made with rice, but I can't eat it as much as I wish because it really fattening me and constipateme really fast, so I guess it depends of every body organism
astroman0500 Our proximity to the US, I suppose. But also for us, if it's not US it's UK style we do things. We use pounds, and we use cups and spoons to measure our ingredients. astroman0500 Well most canadians live within 100km of the USA, so that's an interesting fact. There aren't a lot of Canadians who haven't crossed the border at some point in their lives. And I often use inches because it's more convenient for sewing.
I need rice everyday in my life! I'm from Puerto Rico and we eat a lot of rice and people who are not used to our diet gain weight sooo fast, meanwhile, I'm barely 105lbs!
if you want something "heartier" to replace the rice in stews and soups, try adding legumes and pulses. They're high in protein, iron and fibre; and really bulk out a meal to make it more substantial :)
This is really interesting to get a different perspective because a lot of people have said that they've lost weight when coming to Korea. Obviously it differs for everyone but I tend to notice that Koreans are generally very skinny, incorporate more healthy foods, etc so its interesting. Anyone else have a similar experience?
A lot of people in the comments are either defending highcarb/lowfat or lowcarb/highfat (as in protein from meat, eggs etc...) but actually, it's okay to have both! I lost a lot of weight by eating lean sources of protein and complex carbs, just not together because they digest in different ways which can hinder digestion and cause bloating. I'm visiting Korea this summer and I can't wait to try all the yummy foods, but I'm sure if I stick to that rule, I shouldn't gain. For example, veggie bibimbap on it's own without meat or the delicious egg (sobsobsob), or Korean bbq wrapped in a ton of lettuce with veggies ^^
Is brown rice or multi-grain rice not commonly available in Korea? I mean, I can eat white rice since it's incorporated into all my meals, but having a healthier choice is always better
Brown rice is a laughable half step above white rice if you look at the nutrition label. Quinoa, amaranth, farro, barley & other whole grains are a much better choice.
Having just eliminated most white flour and sugar from my diet it's great to hear ideas from people following the same plan. It's amazing to me how much better I feel and I've lost at least 10 pounds in the past month and a half
I have to lose some serious weight (my BMI is horrendous) sadly, and I've consulted a nutritionist so I know what I need to do but, I'm thinking of adding some EYK inspired ideas into my lifestyle changes and blogging it, I'm going to be using Martina's coconut pancake recipe for when I get the carb sugar cravings because I've made them before and they're awesome :)
I've been subscribed to these guys for awhile but haven't watched any of their vids for about a year or so... and I have to say their Korean pronunciation REALLY improved.
Maybe you know already, but in case you don't...be really careful with the xylitol around Spudgy. It's extremely dangerous for dogs, even in fairly small doses.
I think you guys are awesome for sticking with this. You look great, not just because you lost weight, but because you guys achieved your goals. I think you look more radiant and lively now compared to your older videos. I wish I could change my diet as effectively as you guys did, but eating healthy and using things like vegan/gluten free alternatives is friggin' expensive. I'm trying to start, though, by eliminating excess sugar and fats in my diet. Thanks for the inspiration!
I'm so glad you made this video!!!!! I'm Celiac, hundred percent gluten free, and have been wondering about this for ages. That's awesome your still able to get flax and almond flower but lame pants that the restaurants don't cater for people with diets very well.! Thank so much!
everyones body is different. I've been low carb for four years and stopped having chronic pain and miscarriages. you need to listen to your own body, but for me this is the way I need to eat to function
While cutting out the gluten and bulk of simple carbs will make you feel better and inevitably lead to weight loss ( if of course you do not just replace it with more starches ) you must remember that it is truely about calories in/ out and macronutrient requirements. Quinoa is full of carbs and will not be your answer to low carbing. To make low carbing work for the body you must eat less than 30g a day and force the body into ketosis which can be dangerous. I lost 70 lbs just by finding out what my BMR was, and eating 400 cals less a day than that number. I had no limits for what I could eat other than the calorie limit.
YES PUT UP RECIPES!!! I'm totally digging this diet!! I would love to see some stuffs you make. Srsly...for me this kind of diet seems totally amazing but a little bit hard to get started with. Like I don't even know what chia seeds are..... there's so much research to do about eating healthy! If you could put up recipes and ideas it would be just another great resource for people like me who are also trying to eat better and cut out a lot of carbs and sugars. You guys are the best!
I think it really depends how many vegetables, beans, tofu, etc you currently eat and incorporate into your cooking. I've been a vegetarian for about 5 years now but I haven't found it hard since I ate a lot of vegetables before and always liked them. I really don't like the taste of meat anymore but I do still eat fish because I love sushi/sashimi. Many people find themselves craving a burger here and there but as for me and my experience I didn't really miss it at all. Hope that helps!
Well yes technically, I just consider myself a vegetarian because my normal diet purely consists of vegetables, beans, grains, and fruit. In the beginning I didn't eat fish for a very long time but once I tried it later on again I liked it much more than I did meat. I still don't eat it all the time but on special occasions I will. Obviously I'm not strict but sometimes when I tell people I'm a pescatarian they always don't what that is so I tried to make it as simple as possible. You can still be a vegetarian and eat fish.
You guys are really funny, I enjoy watching your videos. Even though I'd probably never go to Korea it's still really cool to learn about it from you guys. Looking forward to your other videos I've only watched like maybe 5 so far lol^^
I personally would love more cooking video. Martina did some when they first started open the happy but none since. It would also give as a way to see their apartment and how they decorated it since they moved.
but carbs are really good for you. It's the fat that's in the meat that is making you gain weight and natural sugars are good for you (The ones found naturally in foods like fruit). Ditching junk food is probably what made you loose the weight as that has a high fat content.
depends. if you are diabetic, carbs are not good for you. it depends on your body and what is going on inside. for me, I am allergic to folic acid so...rice and bread is enriched and I can't eat it. It was killing me.
Ive been trying to eat healthy! ... the only problem is that its really hard to do when youre a teenager in spirts and your parents control your meals, while at the same time buying junk food for themselves--- you gave me confidence to keep trying! Hwaiting!!!
If you get rid of carbs you start burning through your muscle so make sure you are getting some! Carbs are in bananas because we need carbs, they run each cell in your body.. Meat is very unhealthy, I love you guys and just want to make sure you stay healthy! Good for you replacing oils and having smoothies 😁❤️
Carbs are in bananas and there is scientific proof that a plant based diet can prolong life and even reverse diseases like cancer. Look at nutritionfacts.org/video/uprooting-the-leading-causes-of-death/ for the facts from doctors.
Check out freelee,or Happy Healthy vegan, carb restriction is sooo last year ,be real you love potatoes, some rice, pasta etc And vegg, fruit, legumes, carbs are what your body really needs and it's yummy ! And food babies are good ,go to bed like buddha and wake up like ghandi but ofcource concistant exercise is key jog around the block even bike riding is good. But yeah no offence carb restriction is why diets fail soon enough .
Your house sounds like heaven~ I've been on a gluten free diet for over four years now, and when I saw the bob's red mill packages I smiled instantaneously, along with the mentioning of Quinoa and gluten free diets. Martina, your muffins sound amazing. And there is nothing wrong with being hippies~
So how come that Koreans (or Asians in general) are so skinny when they are eating so much rice and apparently have so much sugar in everything? Is it really just because of the way how they digest?
Congrats on the weight loss and healthier lives and all! And you guys talked about gluten free diets!!! Maybe later on could you guys talk more specifically about these diets? Some of us have to eat on a diet because of dietary issues...
yay for eating healthy! Its nice to hear you guys have changed your diets so drastically but its totally for the better. i hope eventually gluten free options will be more prevalent because thats one thing that has always worried me if i was to travel to korea.
I LOVE YOU SIMON AND MARTINA! Even though you live in korean, you are still updated and care about toronto and that piggy mayor :D. Can you please come and have a fan meeting again in Toronto. Last you had one, i was to young and my parents didnt let me.
hey guys! my question is about korean food. since it's been 5 years since you guys have been living in korea, are you able to eat any kind of korean food, whether it be street food or restaurant/supermarket food or is there some food and drink your stomachs still can't handle? what about water? do you still have to drink bottled water only? how long did it take your stomachs to adjust to having korean food and drinks all the time?
On the topic of dieting, you can use a Whey Isolate or Casein Protein for multiple applications in the kitchen. Isolate is for more protein in your diet with shakes and amazing for baking. The casein is a longer digesting protein which is particularly great for shakes. It has that thicker, creamier mouth feel and keeps you fuller longer - great for dieting. Add some almond butter and you got yourself an amazing treat right there. Quick tip for beginning dieters, SLOWLY reduce your calorie intake
OMG yes please do some healthy meal videos. I've been trying to eat healthier too and since I can easily find that stuff you were talking about here, I think the videos would be so helpful...and you know, I wouldn't mind if u brought Rob Ford in for those pancakes. Seriously you guys are so lucky you're not in T.O right now. Some of the things about this guy make me sad for the city.
having a hispanic background, i could never give up rice. i love it so much. it's what i grew up on. also, i'm of the opinion that you can have everything, but within moderation.
This week's WANK is a bit delayed, because Martina was sick so we had to film it later, which means it's being edited later. We hope to have it up tonight!
Whoa you guys are super healthy. I've been trying to go for the healthy stuff, but it's a bit complicated to cook with. One thing I love though is quinona rider (quinoa) lol and I replaced white sugar for raw brown sugar and honey. Now I'm inspired to change up more of my diet thanks to you guys. Please share the recipes soon! XD
Great job on the diet, guys! Both look amaaaazzinnngg. I started a diet recently too where I'm cutting out all white things and trying to add in as much color as I can (Veggies, fruit, etc). As a 1/2 Korean I found it sooo awful to give up white rice T_T But I'm staying strong! You guys inspire me! XD
I'm very sorry that happened to you. I understand where you are coming from. I appreciate you sharing your experience and I'm glad you turned something negative into something positive for you to share with others. Anyway, I would appreciate it if this conversation could be over. I never wanted to start an argument and I really didn't mean to offend you if I did. I was just offering a thought.
Hey Simon & Martina! I was wondering if you could do a TL; DR on nail salons. How popular are nail salons in Seoul? How much do manicures and pedicures usually cost? And what are some of the current trends? I've noticed Martina always has really awesomely cute nails. (: thanks!
Guise, if you ever need to make something with sugar you should try using fruit sugar! I'm not sure about availability in Korea or the actual details of it, but I know it's a very natural sugar which is actually a lot sweeter than normal white caster sugar. You could try it out~
Martina and Simon! I just got here in Seoul this week and this is so helpful... I've been staying away from the rice too ;). Thanks for this video, you guys are awesome =). P.S. - Think about switching to almond milk; it is way yummier and way healthier! I've heard bad things about soy too.
I am a big fan of just eating less and exercising more. It has worked for the last 9 years. Cutting carbs works, but it easily causes relapse, and many if not all substitutions taste just okay.
Dramafever is another site that has Kdramas, latino telanovelas/dramas, Taiwanese dramas and more. Plus, almost all of the videos have English and sometimes French/Spanish subs.
I had to go on a non dairy and gluten diet when I was 15 because I had tummy troubles after I had kidney stones and it was the saddest time of my life! D: I didn't lose weight from it but I was also in and out of the hospital so I just stayed in bed cuz I had no energy. BUT I'm now trying to eat more fruits and veggies and less bread especially since I'm headed off to college! GO VOLS!
Just FYI. The conversion for pounds to kilogram is 2.2 pounds = 1 kilo. I have to know this for pharmacy school because we have to convert between these units a lot.
That would be interesting to hear. I have Celiac Disease so I basically live on a gluten free diet. I want to teach in Korea, but not sure how that well that would work out with my gluten free lifestyle
How's the options for students studying abroad in Korea? Is there a need for the students to be fluent in Korean or can you cope by just knowing English? How is college/university life in Korea?
Hi Simon and Martina!!!! First off, I just wanted to say I love you two. I plan on moving to South Korea and becoming a teacher (not in that order XD) and you two really inspire me. Anywhooo, I've got a quick question. What are some popular shows or people among younger kids? Like, here in the states there's spongebob, disney channel. Do teens in Korea obsess over american celebrities, too? What do kids in Korea do for fun? I know in Japan they don't have a lot of free time....is it the same?
I tried the coconut pancakes, and they were deliciously coconut-y! You can really taste the coconut, which i like :) it is a little egg-y but still dericious! Thanks guys!

Who uses kilos? XD Like... The entire world! XD Except the USA and the UK, which is weird, you guys are Canadian, don't canadians use kilos to? .-.
+astroman0500 No we don't, haha.
***** - Southern accent - Uh... Why, Ma'am?
astroman0500 Our proximity to the US, I suppose. But also for us, if it's not US it's UK style we do things. We use pounds, and we use cups and spoons to measure our ingredients. Then when it comes to measuring length and distance we us km and m but often use inches and cm interchangeably.
But I think there is one thing the world can agree on, besides Americans: Fahrenheit is a weird measurement of temperature.
***** But for example, I live at the opposite side of you, in Mexico, andlike you(?), we have big influences from the States in our daily lives, but we use the metric system exclusively... Nonetheless, It's interesting to see how Canadians use, or rather, do their measurements, haha!
astroman0500 Well most canadians live within 100km of the USA, so that's an interesting fact. There aren't a lot of Canadians who haven't crossed the border at some point in their lives. And I often use inches because it's more convenient for sewing.
OMG!!! Low carb recipes, yes! My sister lives in Korea, and she keeps telling me how hard it is to find things and eat things. SHARE YOUR RECIPESSSS!
I forgot!!! But I did post some recipes in this blog post. :D
I need rice everyday in my life! I'm from Puerto Rico and we eat a lot of rice and people who are not used to our diet gain weight sooo fast, meanwhile, I'm barely 105lbs!
I like their silliness, they lighten my day.
if you want something "heartier" to replace the rice in stews and soups, try adding legumes and pulses.
WOOT! RECIPES!!! Can't wait for the open the happy videos. :) I could read the blog post but it's so much better when someone else shows you.
Is brown rice or multi-grain rice not commonly available in Korea? I mean, I can eat white rice since it's incorporated into all my meals, but having a healthier choice is always better
I agree with you! Brown rice would be a healthier choice!
Wild/black rice is a good option too!

I have to try them, finally found semi-cheap coconut flour! :) Good luck!
I've been subscribed to these guys for awhile but haven't watched any of their vids for about a year or so... and I have to say their Korean pronunciation REALLY improved.
Maybe you know already, but in case you don't...be really careful with the xylitol around Spudgy. It's extremely dangerous for dogs, even in fairly small doses.

giovoid and Panama...we just change ove to kilos but no one uses it 😂
Burma, too

I live in Toronto and I've been using kilos for everything
Simon and Martina humor is my kind of humor. Your videos and explanations are very enjoyable :)
Low carb diets aren't necessarily healthy. I don't think the two should be equated.
Yeah, i am currently on low fat, high carbs and proteins and its pretty okay
everyones body is different. I've been low carb for four years and stopped having chronic pain and miscarriages. you need to listen to your own body, but for me this is the way I need to eat to function

JS, America and England are pretty much the only countries to use pounds.. and oz, miles, etc' :P
I hate Canada uses lbs and kilometers for drive
@@thcalicia true, forgot about Canada. but Canada is only half as bad as the US and UK ^-^'

Any other high carb vegans in the house? GIVE MEH DA RICE
How nice of you to say. I eat a full fat diet, low carbs and a lot of fresh vegetables and I'm healthier and fitter than ever!
How hard is it to be a vegetarian?
I think it really depends how many vegetables, beans, tofu, etc you currently eat and incorporate into your cooking. I've been a vegetarian for about 5 years now but I haven't found it hard since I ate a lot of vegetables before and always liked them. Nessawr Thank you so much. This is very helpful ^_^
:D I'm glad, if you have any other questions feel free to message me.
Nessawr Wouldn't that make you a Pescatarian since you eat fish?
Well yes technically, I just consider myself a vegetarian because my normal diet purely consists of vegetables, beans, grains, and fruit. Metric system is more logical and makes more sense, that's why every smart country adapted it.
I personally would love more cooking video. Martina did some when they first started open the happy but none since. It would also give as a way to see their apartment and how they decorated it since they moved.
Quinona Ryder *dying*
Omg at Rob Ford! LOOOL i love that you guys are still up to date about toronto news :)
Americans focus too much on eating and different diets, in my opinion. You need to MOVE more, that's what humans are built for.
Yes! please make more open the happy videos for your recipes!. That would be awesome !!!
but carbs are really good for you. It's the fat that's in the meat that is making you gain weight and natural sugars are good for you (The ones found naturally in foods like fruit). Ditching junk food is probably what made you loose the weight as that has a high fat content.

+beUtyista are you implying carbs are in bananas because we eat bananas and hence... Carbs are goods?
Carbs are in bananas and there is scientific proof that a plant based diet can prolong life and even reverse diseases like cancer. Look at nutritionfacts.org/video/uprooting-the-leading-causes-of-death/ for the facts from doctors.
Meat isn't unhealthy and cutting meat out of your diet can be deadly. Simon and Martina are not vegan or vegetarian.
Also, you guys should totally put up cooking videos! I would love to see you guys cook healthy food as well as some Korean food!

for those who want to know...
lbs divided by 2.2 equals kg (kg times 2.2 equals lbs)
can you talk about eating DOG meat in Korea, plzzzzzzzz
Gosh i eat rice like every day. I can't imagine not eating it. But i applaud you guys, i could never diet like you guys!
low carb is not the way to go, HIGH Carb! Low Fat. from fruit ,vegetables and root vegetables, eat alot of it!
unless theyre highly active, high carb is not the way to go.
***** yes it is in that case aswell
Who the fuck cares? We don't need a lot of carbs ( even from fruits) we just need enough. Too much carb can make you fat
I would go high carb high fat high protein high everything
then ur propably high aswell.
Congrats on the weight loss and healthier lives and all! And you guys talked about gluten free diets!!! Maybe later on could you guys talk more specifically about these diets? Some of us have to eat on a diet because of dietary issues...

This is very helpful, since I am type 1 Diabetic, and I need to watch my carb intake to calculate my insulin intake.
I LOVE YOU SIMON AND MARTINA! Even though you live in korean, you are still updated and care about toronto and that piggy mayor :D. Can you please come and have a fan meeting again in Toronto. Last you had one, i was to young and my parents didnt let me.
oooh! Please! PLEASE! Do the goji berry cupcakes! I would love to learn the recipe~!
and if u want to skip sugar, i would suggest using Splenda. It probably is only one sweetener that is considered healthy.
and btw i have been watching you guys since yr 2 in korea and you guys look fantastic!!!
hey guys! my question is about korean food. since it's been 5 years since you guys have been living in korea, are you able to eat any kind of korean food, whether it be street food or restaurant/supermarket food or is there some food and drink your stomachs still can't handle? what about water? do you still have to drink bottled water only? how long did it take your stomachs to adjust to having korean food and drinks all the time?
Thank you so much for the recipes on your blog post!! I'm going to try some coconut pancake deliciousness now! :)
Get well soon, Martina!
Your skin seems to be getting much clearer and prettier..what products do you guys use?
Ahhh yay!!! This is exactly how I cook and eat, it's so great to see my favorite youtubers doing the same omg ;D
XD
Great job keep working hard! 화이팅!
Y'all should straight up write a cook book!!! I'd buy it so fast!!
I find it really cool how Simon and Martina are updated on the news here Canada. Rob Ford hahaha
:O I'm going to have to re-watch some and keep a lookout for them.
Hi guys I was just leaving a comment to let you guys now that I think you guys are cool and I really love y'all videos
Hey Simon & Martina! I was wondering if you could do a TL; DR on nail salons. How popular are nail salons in Seoul? How much do manicures and pedicures usually cost? And what are some of the current trends? I've noticed Martina always has really awesomely cute nails. (: thanks!
Martina's face at 7:48 has truly made my day :)
WhoaI didn't know you guys did so much!! I love your videos ^^
I am vegan and I love to know about this. Thinking on going to Korea in the future. Greetings from NYC.
Guise, if you ever need to make something with sugar you should try using fruit sugar! I'm not sure about availability in Korea or the actual details of it, but I know it's a very natural sugar which is actually a lot sweeter than normal white caster sugar. You could try it out~
QUINOA IS AWESOME !! ive been eating that for a long time and its so good !
Cutting carbs works, but it easily causes relapse, and many if not all substitutions taste just okay.
you should check their blog archive...
Dramafever is another site that has Kdramas, latino telanovelas/dramas, Taiwanese dramas and more. Plus, almost all of the videos have English and sometimes French/Spanish subs.
Man, and I thought I ate healthy! This motivates me to eat even healthier! Thanks Simon and Martina ;)
Excuse you, we use metric and imperial for weight in the UK.
Ur diet sounds pretty good..... coconut pancakes so good..
Thank you! That really cleared it all up!
I know in Japan they don't have a lot of free time....is it the same?
omg Rob Ford
I love how you guys are still caught up with toronto news
i love the clear bean thread noodles, im pretty sure it's even more healthier than the regular rice noodles :))) yumm
This video is awesome. :D good job guys on healthy fun lifestyle
i think this in every video, but you two are just the cutest couple ever!
I tried the coconut pancakes, and they were deliciously coconut-y! You can really taste the coconut, which i like :) it is a little egg-y but still dericious! Thanks guys!
