    I was raised Korean with my Korean side. My mother avoids eating too many carbs by mixing her white glutenous rice with different beans, wild rice, and brown rice soaked over night. She also makes her own kimchee to maintain her sodium intake.

    i dont think you have a problem digesting rice. if you cut out the rice you reduce the amount of calories you consume. so you are actually just eating less...thats why you lose weight.

    • @waltersumofan
      @waltersumofan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +johnnyboy562 The inability to digest large amounts of rice at once for every meal is indeed a real thing for some Westerners. When I was in Japan, rice would really "stick" to me and it ended up causing me a lot of constipation and some other problems as my body was not used to dealing with so much of it at once. Adding lots of fibre wasn't enough or impractical. However, for me eating as many potatoes as I want is perfectly fine. Funny enough friends can't eat a lot of potatoes I would guess for the opposite reason. Our respective amylase enzymes in our saliva are expecting certain kinds of starch. Eating rice at home for non-Asian families isn't as common in Toronto so I would guess that would be the case for Simon and Martina too. Hope that helps.

    • @johnnyboy562
      @johnnyboy562 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      waltersumofan not quite. simon and martina said that they had problems digesting rice because when they cut it out it helped them lose alot of weight. the point is to lose weight you must be in a calorie deficit nothing to do with constipation or discomfort as you are refering to. in fact if your body is having issues digesting you should lose more weight as you are not absorbing any macronutrients whatsoever.

      +waltersumofan I live in Paraguay, here is common to eat "guiso" for médium to low social class with is basically a lot of rice or noodles with a little bit of meat, I loveit when is made with rice, but I can't eat it as much as I wish because it really fattening me and constipateme really fast, so I guess it depends of every body organism

      astroman0500 Our proximity to the US, I suppose. But also for us, if it's not US it's UK style we do things. We use pounds, and we use cups and spoons to measure our ingredients. Then when it comes to measuring length and distance we us km and m but often use inches and cm interchangeably.
      But I think there is one thing the world can agree on, besides Americans: Fahrenheit is a weird measurement of temperature.

    • @astroman0500
      @astroman0500 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** But for example, I live at the opposite side of you, in Mexico, andlike you(?), we have big influences from the States in our daily lives, but we use the metric system exclusively... Nonetheless, It's interesting to see how Canadians use, or rather, do their measurements, haha!

    • @EmsIsFab
      @EmsIsFab 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      astroman0500 Well most canadians live within 100km of the USA, so that's an interesting fact. There aren't a lot of Canadians who haven't crossed the border at some point in their lives. And I often use inches because it's more convenient for sewing.

    This is really interesting to get a different perspective because a lot of people have said that they've lost weight when coming to Korea. Obviously it differs for everyone but I tend to notice that Koreans are generally very skinny, incorporate more healthy foods, etc so its interesting. Anyone else have a similar experience?

    Maybe you know already, but in case you don't...be really careful with the xylitol around Spudgy. It's extremely dangerous for dogs, even in fairly small doses.

    While cutting out the gluten and bulk of simple carbs will make you feel better and inevitably lead to weight loss ( if of course you do not just replace it with more starches ) you must remember that it is truely about calories in/ out and macronutrient requirements. Quinoa is full of carbs and will not be your answer to low carbing. To make low carbing work for the body you must eat less than 30g a day and force the body into ketosis which can be dangerous. I lost 70 lbs just by finding out what my BMR was, and eating 400 cals less a day than that number. I had no limits for what I could eat other than the calorie limit.

    A lot of people in the comments are either defending highcarb/lowfat or lowcarb/highfat (as in protein from meat, eggs etc...) but actually, it's okay to have both! I lost a lot of weight by eating lean sources of protein and complex carbs, just not together because they digest in different ways which can hinder digestion and cause bloating.
    I'm visiting Korea this summer and I can't wait to try all the yummy foods, but I'm sure if I stick to that rule, I shouldn't gain. For example, veggie bibimbap on it's own without meat or the delicious egg (sobsobsob), or Korean bbq wrapped in a ton of lettuce with veggies ^^

    if you want something "heartier" to replace the rice in stews and soups, try adding legumes and pulses. They're high in protein, iron and fibre; and really bulk out a meal to make it more substantial :)

    How hard is it to be a vegetarian?

    • @Butterflymentality
      @Butterflymentality 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think it really depends how many vegetables, beans, tofu, etc you currently eat and incorporate into your cooking. I've been a vegetarian for about 5 years now but I haven't found it hard since I ate a lot of vegetables before and always liked them. I really don't like the taste of meat anymore but I do still eat fish because I love sushi/sashimi. Many people find themselves craving a burger here and there but as for me and my experience I didn't really miss it at all. Hope that helps!

      Nessawr Wouldn't that make you a Pescatarian since you eat fish?

    • @Butterflymentality
      @Butterflymentality 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well yes technically, I just consider myself a vegetarian because my normal diet purely consists of vegetables, beans, grains, and fruit. In the beginning I didn't eat fish for a very long time but once I tried it later on again I liked it much more than I did meat. I still don't eat it all the time but on special occasions I will. Obviously I'm not strict but sometimes when I tell people I'm a pescatarian they always don't what that is so I tried to make it as simple as possible. You can still be a vegetarian and eat fish.

    On the topic of dieting, you can use a Whey Isolate or Casein Protein for multiple applications in the kitchen. Isolate is for more protein in your diet with shakes and amazing for baking. The casein is a longer digesting protein which is particularly great for shakes. It has that thicker, creamier mouth feel and keeps you fuller longer - great for dieting. Add some almond butter and you got yourself an amazing treat right there. Quick tip for beginning dieters, SLOWLY reduce your calorie intake

    but carbs are really good for you. It's the fat that's in the meat that is making you gain weight and natural sugars are good for you (The ones found naturally in foods like fruit). Ditching junk food is probably what made you loose the weight as that has a high fat content.

    I lost weight in Korea eating Korean food INCLUDING the rice, but I'd usually eat...not like a Korean. 1/2 a cup of rice maximum, focus on the low calories sidedishes, veggies and meat side of things...if you get a roll of kimbap just eat only one roll for your entire meal (you can supplement with veggies, veggie based sidedishes or a single fruit if you need more food), eat lots of soups and stews also! : ) I just found it was all about moderation and walking a ton!

    Have you tried almond milk? For the protein shakes. You'll need a half a pound of almonds previously "soaked" (I think is the correct word here) in water for about 8 hours. Put it with 900cc of water in a blender, blend everything and then strain to separate the solids from the liquid (try doing it with a very fine strainer or a piece of cloth to filter everything). white rice are consider bad carbs, to give the white color to the rice, the brown color was taken off along with all the good nutrients.
    i did not said asain are the only one who can eat rice,majority of us eat rice as a base for our cuisine.
    for people who are not used to white rice, their body digest slower and you can absolutely get fat off white rice if you eat a huge amount of it everyday and thats the same for any foods not just "animal products"

    (Part 1) At my university in America we have a TON of Korean exchange students, and I am friends with a large portion of them. I think almost every Korean I talked to here likes American dramas more than Korean dramas, and yes they do (even the girls!) watch the Game of Thrones. Also I studied abroad in South Korea for a year and although I didn't ask every Korean, whenever the subject came up, they always say that they like foreign dramas a LOT (IT Crowd, Game of Thrones, Friends, etc).....

    I'm very sorry that happened to you. I understand where you are coming from. I appreciate you sharing your experience and I'm glad you turned something negative into something positive for you to share with others.
    Anyway, I would appreciate it if this conversation could be over. I never wanted to start an argument and I really didn't mean to offend you if I did. I was just offering a thought.

    omg I about died laughing at the "spinach in a glass" with how Simon's voice goes up. So funny.
    I've lost 120lbs in year but I've kind of stalled out but have quite a ways to go. I might have to look into some of the low carby stuff and try that route.

    Great job on the diet, guys! Both look amaaaazzinnngg. I started a diet recently too where I'm cutting out all white things and trying to add in as much color as I can (Veggies, fruit, etc). As a 1/2 Korean I found it sooo awful to give up white rice T_T But I'm staying strong! You guys inspire me! XD

    Guise, if you ever need to make something with sugar you should try using fruit sugar! I'm not sure about availability in Korea or the actual details of it, but I know it's a very natural sugar which is actually a lot sweeter than normal white caster sugar. You could try it out~

    divide pounds by 2.2 to get kilograms instead of just 2. it makes quite a difference.
    Simon: before: 104.5kg after: 86kg
    Martina: before: 77kg after: 66kg

    eating rice is totally fine, just watch the portion, always follow the food pyramid rule. Low carb doesn't necessarily mean no starch. Starch helps with the fat burn faster. A diet totally getting rid of starch will probably getting ppl cranking. When looking at nutrion table, care more about the carb, sodium, high in either one is not good.
    Plus daily physical exercise, u'll easily keep a healthy life style.

    Dramafever is another site that has Kdramas, latino telanovelas/dramas, Taiwanese dramas and more. Plus, almost all of the videos have English and sometimes French/Spanish subs.

    Well, as it was said in the video, people from different cultures have different diets and thus digest foods differently. Asians may eat more rice, but North Americans tend to eat more processed foods that have a lot of sugar/salt/carbs/etc. Also, North Americans tend to be more sedentary, which is less often the case in many Asian countries.

    hey guys! my question is about korean food. since it's been 5 years since you guys have been living in korea, are you able to eat any kind of korean food, whether it be street food or restaurant/supermarket food or is there some food and drink your stomachs still can't handle? what about water? do you still have to drink bottled water only? how long did it take your stomachs to adjust to having korean food and drinks all the time?

    We're weird, us Canadians. We mix the metric system and the imperial system. Usually we measure in millimeters, kilometers and centimeters but for things like height, foot size, weight, etc we use pounds, feet and inches.

    if you were making pancakes, and wanted to make them vegan friendly, you would use applesauce in place of the egg, for example.
    applesauce replacing oil would only work if you are baking something that is sweet-ish. (or if you like the taste of applesauce!)

    I don't really measure my food by the calories, I basically keep track of what types of foods I eat every day. I make sure I have fruit, vegetables, calcium, etc. I find that I stay more fit. I have been 130 for 2 years now. Also, I am filipino so eating meat for breakfast is regular. With rice of course!! :D

    Hi Simon and Martina!!!! First off, I just wanted to say I love you two. I plan on moving to South Korea and becoming a teacher (not in that order XD) and you two really inspire me.
    Anywhooo, I've got a quick question.
    What are some popular shows or people among younger kids? Like, here in the states there's spongebob, disney channel. Do teens in Korea obsess over american celebrities, too? What do kids in Korea do for fun? I know in Japan they don't have a lot of free time....is it the same?

    THANK YOU! I am a medical vegetarian. By this I mean there is a medical condition that has made me a vegetarian. I recently moved to Korea to be an English teacher, and I continuously get the shocked reactions from my students of 'Oh, My gosh, my teacher doesn't eat meat. How is she living?'
