Great video! I modified it slightly...i found the initial purple wash dominated the model, so a glaze of Agrax earthshade browned it down to my satisfaction. On the face as well, to me the final white highlight was too white, but again, with a thinned down wash of Tesseract Glow, it works!

I think it would work OK, but the tesseract glow is a really neat paint that combines some of the qualities of a fluorescent paint with a contrast paint. It's pretty transparent, to it doesn't tint the "wood" portions of the mini as much as a contrast paint would. It's also looks "brighter" than any of the other contrast paints, even the yellows (at least to my eye).
What a wonderful video and congratulations on the win too. I’m desperate to paint my Sylvaneth army like yours. However I can’t find the brown you used for base coat. Badger Sylenrez have a “red brown” but I don’t think that’s what you used? Do you know the Citadel or ProAcryl equivalent basecoar brown please? Thank you!
Citadel's Gorthor Brown would probably be close. Pro-Acryl's Light Umber would also work. But the base color doesn't matter so much - any sort of medium brown would probably be fine. Army Painter has a "Leather Brown" spray that looks good too (but I haven't tried their sprays). Once you add washes and drybrushing, it shouldn't make a big difference.
I really love the video and your painting skills but one thing I would add is a lamp facing the model because I find it a bit hard to see when your doing the browns and darker colours
If you drybrush them along with all the wood, you end up with a pretty good, pre-shaded base to add some contrast paint to. They're mostly Aethermatic Blue Contrast, with a bit of Talassar Blue in the cracks to darken them up a bit.
Wanted to go for a deadwood/drow bodies to make a frightening sylvaneth army but your tutorial reaaally make me rethink my choice. Don't know if you're still there but what would you do for all the insects and base decoration we got on the sprues? Same thing or more neutral?
For mine, I used a bright contrast blue to make them pop a bit. That's the most common question from this video - I really need to do a follow-up showing bugs! I also think the Turbodork colorshift paints could be fun to try for insect carapaces. I've played around with some of their reformulated paints and they go on nicely with a brush.

This made me get so much Sylvaneth 😂 I’d love to know: how did you do the awakened Wyrdwood? And did you do the arch revenant or the gossamer archers too? I wonder how I’d do their wings in this scheme.
I actually converted my Wyldwoods, using 3D-printed templates and Monster Fight Club trees. I basically painted the trees the same way as all the Sylvaneth, just without any "glow". I've been meaning to take some photos of the Arch Revenant & Gossamids. After I get back from Adepticon, I'll get some photos posted. I basically painted them the same way, but used an airbrush to create a gradient on the cloak/wings. Fall colors for the Revenant's cloak, yellow butterfly-ish wings on the Gossamids.

I'm not familiar with Hyrax Brown. Mournfang would work fine, but is going to be a bit warmer/redder. In the Citadel range, Steel Legion Drab might be closer. It's a little lighter; you could mix in a touch of Dryad bark. Hopefully that helps!
Baneblade Brown is probably the closest and would look pretty good too. It's not quite the same; if you mixed just a little bit of something like Steel Legion Drab or Warpfiend Grey into it, it might get closer. If you're able to find a pot of it, Cryx Bane Highlight is a great, warm, greenish gray.
@@rossjoyce419 Basically the same as the "bark" skin, but I drybrushed it a little more heavily with the lightest drybrush color, then used a bit of Athonian Camoshade wash to darken it up.
Question after Primer. Chaos Black, then Dryad Black, Gorthor Brown or Rhinox Hide? I dont know what to pick after priming Black. Nice Army, so nice that i wanna try it :)
Not a silly question at all! The bright ivory works well through an airbrush, with a little thinning. It's been a minute since I made this video, but I probably used the Vallejo white air paint that I have a big bottle of. It's my go-to, since it's pre-mixed (Here's an amazon link: amzn.to/4aV3Keu). But really and decent white should work.
@@JollyLark Yeah I took a closer look at the models I painted with a brush now, and that bright ivory will likely not be distinguishable from the Titanium White I usually use with my airbrush once the green is on. Thanks mate!

Red is tricky; since it can start to look pink. If that's what you're going for, cool. But it makes getting a nice, bright red glow harder. From the GW range, I would try Baal Red, diluted with contrast medium. Scale 75 makes a "Fluor Red" that's pretty good. It takes a little getting used to, because it has a thicker texture but you could apply that over the white glow and then spread it out. It doesn't flow into the cracks the way the contrast paints do.
Great. Now I had to buy sylvaneth. I'm relatively new to the business, don't have an airbrush and just have to test it now :) the stone with skulls and branches. I think the one your treelord has on the base is really cool. Where can I get it? :)
I think that was just an extra bit from the Treelord or Dryads kit; something left over from after building the army (sorry I can't be more specific). It's a super fun army to paint!

Oh boy.. you’re my hero 😂 I've been thinking about how to paint my Sylvaneth army for 3 months and now I've seen your video and excuse me, but I'm going to do it exactly the same way. Just so good that you use Tesseract Glow, because I wanted to have exactly this color with it ❤
If I was going for a fiery effect, I would use white, bright yellow, and Bright orange. Maybe a darker translucent orange, like one of the darker contrast oranges. The key is to have your glow colors all be lighter than your bark colors. Red may not show up as well, which is why I would stick to the lighter fire colors.

Very nice scheme and paint job, I'm borrowing this for my Sylvaneth! One question: on the weapon blades you first use Warp Lightning Green, then after the white "NMM" you say you "go back to the same pot of Hexwraith Flame". You're not using Warp Lightning again (WL first, white, then WL again), but actually switching up the color on top of the white?
That's right - it makes the white highlights a lighter green than using Warp Lightning. Hexwraith Flame is very thin to start with, so you can use it right out of the pot. Using diluted Warp Lightning could also work, but I liked the contrast between the greens. Using undiluted Warp Lightning would probably cover the white highlights too much.

There's a complete paint list in the video description, which is a good starting point. For a palette, I usually use gray palette paper when I'm recording a video. When I'm not recording, I often use a plastic lid as a palette , like one from a large yogurt container. You can shoot me an email (on the Jolly Lark Website) or DM on Instagram. Hi Jolly, would Army Painter Oak brown be too bright compared to your medium brown and can you by chance recommend a substituion for the greys and whites you're using (preferebly citadel) since those products can be difficult to get in my country? :) big fan of this work!
I'm not specifically familiar with that Army Painter color but, looking at pictures, it seems like it would work. For the gray, you're looking for a warm gray - even just mixing a tiny bit of brown into a neutral gray would work too. Something like Dawnstone, but with just a really little bit of brown mixed in. Death Korps Drab might looks good too, maybe lightened up with a bit of bone mixed in. This is a pretty flexible technique though and the exact colors matter less than the overall tone. It can help to do a quick test model and see what you think.

Thanks for sharing this video, the army looks amazing! I'd love to see some pictures of the bug riders as well since I wouldn't know how to paint them to fit into the rest of the army. The same goes for minis that are a bit more human-/spirit-like like tree revenants and Gossamid archers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@@pervyturtle2673 The dryad kit comes with an odd number of models, so you may end up with a few extra you can practice on. If you're going with a blue glow, you may want to try a warmer, browner bark color. Gray and blue are very similar colors, so you may not get as much "pop" putting them side by side.
Loved watching your video. I'm just getting started with the hobby, so this has been super helpful. Question for you: I'm wanting to do something similar to what you did here with the sylvaneth dryad, but I want to do a wargrove of woe coloration (birch bark color with purple glowing highlights). Have any recommedations for the colors I should use?
You can definitely swap the color of the glow, just by using similar brightness of a different color. I'm not aware of a purple contrast that is quite as bright as Tesseract Glow. Vallejo's Express paint "Gloomy Violet" is probably what I would try first. It's a vibrant purple that isn't too dark. You may have trouble getting a "glow" effect on something as light-colored as birch bark. Generally, you want a glowing area to be the brighter parts of the mini - so for the glow effect to work, it needs to be lighter/brighter than the surface it is "shining" on, if that makes sense? Trying to do a colored glow on a light surface often results in it looking more like the light surface has been stained, painted, or dipped in something. Hopefully that's helpful - always happy to try to answer questions!
Sorry, that's the one! I never even realized it was called that. It is a very neutral brown, at least when I bought my bottle a few years ago. It's possible they change the formula, but it doesn't look like it.
@@Justiceinthefog I haven't tackled that kit yet. It's a big model, but really only has a few big areas to figure out. If I was trying to speed-paint it to match this army, I'd probably paint Alarielle in the same way as the tree revenants, with "woody" skin instead of flesh-colored skin. Maybe try swapping her head for a more tree-like head (I've always thought it was odd that their goddess didn't look more tree-y). For the beetle, it really depends on how you're painting your other bugs. I did a dark blue & white zenithal, then went over that with a bright blue contrast paint. I also think iridescent paint looks good. The iridescent effect shows up better on larger surfaces, so the beetle would be great for that. Turbo Dork makes a ton of great colors and Golden Acrylics has some good ones too.
@@JollyLark I gotcha, just curious how many pots of the wash did you go through? I have 1300 points + wyldwoods coming and I wanna pick up the paints before they arrive. Only one I feel like Id need more of is the wash.

Aethermatic blue is a nice, bright blue. The new shade Tyran blue could be a good complement to that. Talassar is also a nice blue that could work for the weapons.

Treelord Ancient Lady of Vines Branchwych 30 Dryads 6 Kurnoth Hunters with Scythes 5 Tree Revenants Since painting these, I've added a few more units (flyers & Tree Revenant) and endless spells and played with different lists. List building might be my least favorite aspect of the hobby though, so I wouldn't take too much from that.

I didn't write that down, but looking at the model I think I drybrushed it with the same gray and white that all the bark skin got. Then it looks like watered-down wash of Tesseract Glow for the brighter parts, followed by a wash of GW's Athonian Camoshade for the darker parts.After that, it looks like I darkened it in some places with Agrax Earthshade. Hopefully that helps!
@@themachinegod When you're applying the drybrushed highlights to the rest of the mini, just try to get the upper parts of the loin cloth's nice and bright. The woven texture takes drybrushing well. Good luck!

I'd use gorthor brown. You want something light, so that the purple wash creates some good, defined, shading.

Using diluted Warp Lightning could also work, but I liked the contrast between the greens. Using undiluted Warp Lightning would probably cover the white highlights too much.
@@JollyLark Yeah that totally works, I just wasn't sure I missed something in the video. xD I just got a Sylvaneth lot in a trade and was looking for inspiration. Your army reminded me of how I (100% less well) painted my Tzeentch, and I really enjoyed that fast but striking process. I hope you don't mind us poor souls copying your beautiful scheme. xD

There's a complete paint list in the video description, which is a good starting point. For a palette, I usually use gray palette paper when I'm recording a video. When I'm not recording, I often use a plastic lid as a palette , like one from a large yogurt container.

Hi Jolly, would Army Painter Oak brown be too bright compared to your medium brown and can you by chance recommend a substituion for the greys and whites you're using (preferebly citadel) since those products can be difficult to get in my country? :)

I'm not specifically familiar with that Army Painter color but, looking at pictures, it seems like it would work. For the gray, you're looking for a warm gray - even just mixing a tiny bit of brown into a neutral gray would work too. Something like Dawnstone, but with just a really little bit of brown mixed in. Death Korps Drab might looks good too, maybe lightened up with a bit of bone mixed in.
This is a pretty flexible technique though and the exact colors matter less than the overall tone. It can help to do a quick test model and see what you think.

@@pervyturtle2673 The dryad kit comes with an odd number of models, so you may end up with a few extra you can practice on.
If you're going with a blue glow, you may want to try a warmer, browner bark color. Gray and blue are very similar colors, so you may not get as much "pop" putting them side by side.

Loved watching your video. I'm just getting started with the hobby, so this has been super helpful. Question for you: I'm wanting to do something similar to what you did here with the sylvaneth dryad, but I want to do a wargrove of woe coloration (birch bark color with purple glowing highlights). Have any recommedations for the colors I should use?
You can definitely swap the color of the glow, just by using similar brightness of a different color. I'm not aware of a purple contrast that is quite as bright as Tesseract Glow. Vallejo's Express paint "Gloomy Violet" is probably what I would try first. It's a vibrant purple that isn't too dark.
You may have trouble getting a "glow" effect on something as light-colored as birch bark. Generally, you want a glowing area to be the brighter parts of the mini - so for the glow effect to work, it needs to be lighter/brighter than the surface it is "shining" on, if that makes sense? Trying to do a colored glow on a light surface often results in it looking more like the light surface has been stained, painted, or dipped in something.

So Ive been looking for the Stynylrez Brown but all I can find is red brown. Could it be under any other name?
Sorry, that's the one! I never even realized it was called that. It is a very neutral brown, at least when I bought my bottle a few years ago. It's possible they change the formula, but it doesn't look like it.

@@Justiceinthefog I haven't tackled that kit yet. It's a big model, but really only has a few big areas to figure out. If I was trying to speed-paint it to match this army, I'd probably paint Alarielle in the same way as the tree revenants, with "woody" skin instead of flesh-colored skin. Maybe try swapping her head for a more tree-like head (I've always thought it was odd that their goddess didn't look more tree-y).
For the beetle, it really depends on how you're painting your other bugs. I did a dark blue & white zenithal, then went over that with a bright blue contrast paint. I also think iridescent paint looks good. The iridescent effect shows up better on larger surfaces, so the beetle would be great for that. Turbo Dork makes a ton of great colors and Golden Acrylics has some good ones too.
@@JollyLark I gotcha, just curious how many pots of the wash did you go through? I have 1300 points + wyldwoods coming and I wanna pick up the paints before they arrive. Only one I feel like Id need more of is the wash.
Really new to AoS and hobby painting, so thank you for the tutorial. If I wanted to instead do a blue glow, are there some colors you recommend? Im colorblind so I struggle with selecting values
Aethermatic blue is a nice, bright blue. The new shade Tyran blue could be a good complement to that. Talassar is also a nice blue that could work for the weapons.

I really like Aethermatic blue for a bright blue. The new shade Tyran blue could be a good complement to that.

Did you use the red brown primer for this?
These were primed with Badger's brown primer. It's a very basic milk-chocolate color.
Can you please post the list? I know we can see it but it's hard to tell how many dyrads you have and what not

Great work! How did you achieve that kind of woven rough green effect on the Treelord loin cloth? Seen around 22 minutes in?
I didn't write that down, but looking at the model I think I drybrushed it with the same gray and white that all the bark skin got. Then it looks like watered-down wash of Tesseract Glow for the brighter parts, followed by a wash of GW's Athonian Camoshade for the darker parts.After that, it looks like I darkened it in some places with Agrax Earthshade. Hopefully that helps!

@@themachinegod When you're applying the drybrushed highlights to the rest of the mini, just try to get the upper parts of the loin cloth's nice and bright. The woven texture takes drybrushing well. Good luck!
