I believe this is the Zune model that I remember from back in the day.. it’s crazy how the ads hyped up the design that it appeared way too stylish on magazines than it truly looks
The zune hd actually had a beautiful design though and an oled screen years before that was common in smartphones and over a decade before Apple started using them in iPhones.
Still waiting on the Zune HD video. Was the coolest looking Zune by far. And if we want weird nuggets. The Haier Ibiza Rhapsody was my favorite. Similar type of touch pad to the zune but super responsive. Buttons in all the cardinal directions so it made more intuitive sense to use. All around solid Ipod competitor that no one has hear of.
So I bought this 4gb model for $120 as a preteen. It had file sharing, store access, radio, and the zune subscription service, which was amazingly ahead of its time. The UI was also way ahead of its and very modern compared to the apple look. Sadly the Zune store sold drm locked music, so I think it didn’t attract the mp3 crowd at the price, and apple customers were dedicated. Not to mention the Zune software was horrendous. Their was a 3rd party software made just for removing it from your PC. Then a few years later I bought a iPod nano with the video camera. It had most of the same features, still lacked the cool factor imo, but it was an apple product, so it was trendy and worked well. Sadly I realized quickly you could not take pictures with it, which was probably the worst design decision made at apple imo. All that to say I still have both, the nano still holds a charge, the Zune needs a new battery but still operates.
I heard about these but the subscription model definitely turned me off. I bought all my music on CD. Same with getting an iphone, they made it so hard to import my music to my phone that I quickly switched to android. Now I am trying to learn to live without Spotify again and my computer doesn't even recognize my phone anymore...
Zune also had a typical storefront like Itunes did, you could still purchase DRM protected music, but it also offered the subscription, which worked very well. Yeah, thinking back Itunes was just as bad with crashing, ipod not being recognized, trying to import your library.... fun times. @@CainXVII
i had both of these as a kid. the big one and the "nano." space battle was a BANGER, that game was so fun. i didnt even use it to listen to music as a child, it wasnt mine so when i was gifted it i pretty much exclusively used it to play space battle
What a wonderful new year treat. Great video. I only had the first zune and the zune hd. I still use the HD every once in a while because it’s a legitimately nice device. It’s just a shame it was competing against the iPod touch with its App Store and what not.
came from a zune household. i had probably 7 or 8 minis, always got them broken cause we were poor, and the little fraken poo-nano lived till my last battery died. i was great at fixing issues! still have my first gen white 30 gig, now with bluetooth, a 128 gig ssd, and an upgraded battery. very rarely gets used nowadays with my phone having a 1tb sd card full of music. still a neat little nugget
I have 2 Zune HDs and daily drive both of them, they hold up to todays standard as a music player with its awesome oled touch screen and hdtv output. Its also still miraculously small and well designed. I have one that works perfectly still and one I had to replace a battery on. You gotta get a video out on the Zune HD!!
I bought at least 5 or 6 of those 6th and 7th gen nanos (or whatever gen they were... can't be bothered to check) off ebay as each of them slowly succumbed to battery death (and once me wiping out while skiing down a toboggan run... #canada) I fucking loved how light and colourful and user-friendly they were.
It wasn't the hardware that made it special but the service subscription of unlimited music vs apple's itunes where at the time was only purchasable audio....funny how later apple "came out" with apple music and took over the market...😊
4:05 I had that nano and it was great, used it for like 9 years or something and the batt actually lasted for quite some time but she was picky about cables. I'd plug them in and the screen would light up but not have a charging indicator, but would charge when the screen was asleep.
the best creator on the TUBE thank you so much for all your videos! Sorry i didn't support on Patreon! Thank you so much for all these videos on YT! I appreciate the realism!!!!
I had a 2nd gen Zune and I remember loving it!.... until the battery died not even 2 years later. If I remember correctly the battery life was a big issue with that model.
There are screen protectors that have a paper texture to them, really helps with glare, if the glare is really bothering you, you could potentially some sort of plastic that has that same texture
I actually enjoyed this thing because it made it possible for me to listen to new music (because of their subscription service) before we had Spotify. I would go to work with both an iPod and this thing in my pockets... Then my spouse accidentally washed it... to make up for it he bought me a Zune HD... and that thing SUUUUUUCKS. The only good thing about it was the OLED screen, the lack of real controls made it impossible to actually use without constantly removing it from your pocket.
for the games on the zune at about 3:00 i do have to say, if you had this, but no other games. no other form of entertainment... i'd be gaming on the zune honestly, its better then nothing at all.
You can use them while plugged in, that's something modern devices don't have going for them anymore since the manufacturer wants them to only last as long as the battery so they design them to only draw power from the battery to kill it quicker and people throw devices away not knowing the battery is all that's wrong. Acer did this to a laptop in 2004 that had desktop grade graphics and CPU but it was useless cause the battery didn't hold a charge.
Creative Nomad Zen! I had that! It was cheaper, had more storage and I believe battery life vs the ipod and didn't require itunes (which, some consider a positive, some consider a negative). I loved that thing, I used it for ages. The buttons were annoying but it was worth it to me vs the ipod
I still have my 80gb Zune somewhere, pretty sure the battery died because I couldn't turn it on back in the day. I loved that thing but looking back, it had some serious drawbacks. The scroll wheel is awful and wasn't at all precise 😂
Huh I don't remember having any issues with the scrolling on my 80gb I loved that thing and was so bummed out when it died from getting dropped too many times
@noodlelynoodle. it was never precise enough for me, it was fine actually pressing it and moving one song at a time, but that took too long. It was pretty tough though, I definitely dropped it a few too many times

It’s crazy that Microsoft didn’t learn their own lesson with the zune. If you’re going to be late to the party, you gotta do something the other guy can’t. The Xbox was super late to the party but it did so many things the ps2 couldn’t and even though it didn’t come anywhere near the ps2 in sales (no console period has) it did well enough to A. Cement itself in the game, and B. Out do Nintendo.
the creative zen mp3 players were better than either of those. creative had color screens, video, fm radio, mic recording, line in recording, better controls, better build quality, and was smaller than the nano... back before they released the nano in black and white screen. it was also significantly cheaper.
You should explain why you don’t like the 4th and 5th Gen Nanos. I mean, you love the 2nd Gen nano, and they’re essentially the same thing with larger displays

I feel like the Zune had enough going for it that Microsoft actually could have had something special here. It seems like the main downsides all come from Microsoft not actually putting enough effort into making this nugget as could as it could possibly be like Apple did. Instead it just ended up being another cash grab with a moderately better budget than most. The drm locked music, almost but not quite good software, and the physical design that was just a little bit more fiddly than it needed to be. It seems like if Microsoft had copied less of the ipods design and more of the philosophy behind that design it could have actually succeeded.
