    What's up, Gamers?
    Following Mengo's advice, I created some really sick lighting vfx I can use for my indie game - and I think they turned out awesome! Hope you enjoy the lights and lighting effects I added, and maybe it'll be helpful for your own development as well!
    The game that I'm developing as an indie game dev is called Isadora's Edge! A 2D Pixel Art platformer game, that I'm developing in the Godot Game Engine! If you're new to Godot or have any questions about Godot or game dev in general, feel free to ask me!

    Please don't take this poorly as it's just a genuine game design question and I don't want to be rude, but as retro platformers and metroidvania style games have become very popular lately in the indie space I'm interested to know what you plan on doing with yours to make it stand out from the rest, what's the it factor that you want to draw people into your game?

      Never start working on the stuff that is popular now. Before you end making game, it Will sink under the sea of games that are the same. Game devs have to make something that is not on top, to beat the top, it could get popular by other games, but there wont be as much of them as the stuff that is basing on other games, So it can get the spot light after the other game that is different than others, but similar to your

      It's a pretty standard answer, but I'm mostly just trying to have super satisfying movement and combat, with really sick boss fights!
      But I'm okay if I don't make a super popular smash hit, I just want to make a really fun, really cool game! :)

      @InboundShovel as long as you make something you're proud of and really put the effort into making it what you imagined it to be, it'll be great. I think a lot of games would be improved if they focused on that rather than trying to 'beat the top game' 🦾

      People don't understand what drives really good games these days. It isn't making it stand out; it's not attempting to make the most money; it's not getting clout.
      It's passion. Not just passion in making your dream game, but passion that drives you to learn the best designs, the fun mechanics, and memorable levels. Fromsoft failed with Demon's Souls in Japan, it wasnt until it was introduced in the West and used as a stepping stone for Dark Souls that Miyazaki's story began. Dark Souls wasn't even a popular hit until TH-camrs started making lets plays about it.
      Focus on your passion, quality, and fun factor of the game. Fame and fortune in a market can be a fickle thing, and it will drive you into despair constantly trying to reach it. As an Indie Dev, you dont need Baldur's Gate 3 sales or even Lethal Company sales to stay afloat. You just need enough for rent, food, water, and other savings. The most important attributes for a successful Indie Dev is focus and drive.

    There are a lot of great game devs out there making great videos (e.g. aartificial), but not all of them walk through their failures with as much detail as the successes. Really gives some nice “here’s what I’ve been up to lately” energy.

    1) Where are the npc's ??? I believe that you could make a shop/money system.
    2) You could have the frog's collectible charm to be one of his eyes which could either 1. see in the dark or 2. make it so the enemies attack indication is more easy to spot (this is a lot of work but is a interesting idea) 3. zoom out (could be used in platforming, exploring and finding secrets or when a enemy is out of the screen)
    3) It would be cool if the potion flying guys (???) or the plague doctor to (have chance (optional) ) drop the potions and them being like the tools in the long awaited silksong (yea (I hope you are hyped for this game because you played hollow knight)) and isadora throwing them in the air and then slashing them with her sword as she attacks and that would give the attack or the combo this effect so the enemy would be in flames or blasted with lightning(that could stager the enemy) or poison the enemy
    4) The mushroom enemies could drop some mushroom trampolines that are essential to some platformer parts I guess
    5) The bird could drop some kind of undamaged egg tham summons a familiar for some time
    6) the bird enemies could have a later boss that gives you 1.double jump or 2. a charm that summons a familiar
    7) the goop enemies could give a good that when thrown slow enemies and yourself
    8) generally every enemy could have a low chance to give you something and if you don't want it you could trade it for money and the opposite so you don't have to go to earlier areas to farm
    9) I like your videos keep it up
    (10) BTW where did you learn coding
    11) where is the video???

    Hey Inbound Shovel, just found your channel and it's inspired me to get into Game Dev. Every since I was 6, I wanted to make a game, but this was before the internet had such resources and intuitive game engines existed that focused on game design rather than making your own with computer science knowledge.
    Now, I quit my job as a full time software engineer to pursue game dev. Im taking a 6 month game dev course, because I struggle with independent learning and big project tasks around game development.
    I tried Game Jams in college but always struggled following tutorials or getting a game working. Each time I tried to pick it back up again, I hit a wall and gave up.
    But I dont care; this is my dream, and it will be an uphill battle. I will struggle, make barely any money, or be exploited in the industry. I'm okay with that, if it means reaching my goal of developing my dream game.
    Mr. Shovel, I notices years ago you started getting into Game Dev from Game Jams, and slowly gained experience to go Indie. As someone aspiring to do the same, what advice can you give? Do you have a full-time job on the side while juggling Indie Dev? What's your background like? I would love a QA session from you!
    Let's both do our best. Everything I've learned from your shorts have been eye opening, and give me a newfound appreciation for game dev. Your next short should be about moving background parallax effects!

    • @InboundShovel
      @InboundShovel  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey there! I really love your comment, it moved me quite a bit! Once you get past the initial stage where you can't get anything working, it becomes a lot easier - so just keep up the hard work, and you'll get there!
      My best advice would be to start with the simplest, smallest project you can get working - and then just figure out how to add stuff from there! Following tutorials can be helpful, but it's good not to simply follow along, but really try to understand /why/ the stuff they're doing is working - so that you can replicate it in the future!
      I have a really strong programming background, so I had a /huge/ advantage with getting into game dev - but you absolutely don't need to be an expert programmer to make games!
      Let me know if you have any other questions, I'm going to release a Q&A video at some point in the near-ish future, so I'd be happy to discuss any bigger questions in more detail!
      And, I'll get right to work on that parallax background effects short! I'll try to get it posted this Saturday!

    • @GuiriTV
      @GuiriTV 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@InboundShovel Never thought my comment would be seen! I really appreciate that. I also have some programming experience (BAS in Electrical & Computer Engineering), but I've always struggled with programming (especially advanced OOP concepts).
      In one of your other videos, you mentioned having experience as a game engineer! In the QA session, I would love to hear about your background experience, and what aspiring developers should learn to reach a similar proficiency. There's sooooo much info out there that sometimes I don't know where to start! But thank you for the advice; start small and simple. Will do that next chance I get!

Or any suggestion on how to do this?

      I would try using a State Machine!
      When the player isn't in some set "detection zone" (in Godot, I'd use an Area2D that can track the player), the enemy is in the "Patrol" state. When in the patrol state, they do that pre-determined patrolling behaviour.
      When the player /is/ in the detection zone, they switch to the "Attack" state - where they target the player with their attack!

    As someone whos just like recently learning to code and wants to really make games, whats like a way or "strategy" to like getting started with the game making process, like tips or just how do i really get in there without losing my mind, and also maybe how much experience should i even have before i even try to make my own game

    • @InboundShovel
      @InboundShovel  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The best advice I could give is come up with a game you want to make that's as /simple/ as possible! Even simpler than you're thinking right now!
      "A game where a ball can jump around a room." No camera following the ball, no graphics, just a ball jumping around!
      Then, figure out how to get that very basic, very small thing working! A really simple goal like "one jumping ball" is pretty easy to get working, and once you have something super simple working, you can just start adding things!
      "I want to make a square that the ball can pickup" -> "I want picking up the square to give some points" -> "I want a camera to follow my ball around", and so on!
      Once you're happy with that, start another new, simple game and repeat the process!
      The hardest part is getting started, so you should start trying /right/ away! The sooner you have a game engine open that you're playing around with, the better!

    Hey! Yours are the most inspiring devblogs I've seen! How do you work on your enemies/bosses regarding mechanics and art. For example, you have the tree doing to jump and stomp attack with the roots, did you first design the attack and code it, and then requested the art? Or did you design it, requested the art, and then coded it with the art already there. Having trouble understanding the best flow between me (game designer and dev) and my artist. Thanks!

    • @InboundShovel
      @InboundShovel  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Personally, I really like this flow:
      1) Design the attack, what's the purpose of it - think about the details and make sure it makes sense and works from a purely theoretical perspective.
      2) Implement the attack without any art, just flash color squares on the screen and move the enemy around without any animation at all.
      3) Playtest with the "no-art" version of the attack - make sure it feels good and works how you want! If it doesn't, it's back to stage 1 or 2.
      4) Send the request to the artist for a blockout animation. No details, just the basic keyframes of the animation, roughly colored in.
      5) Add the blockout animation to the attack, tweaking small details for timing and hitboxes and stuff, to make sure it line up with the blockout.
      6) Playtest the attack with the new blockout animation. Make sure it still feels good. If not, figure out if the attack itself needs tweaked, or if the animation needs tweaked, and adjust accordingly.
      7) Request the finalized detailed animation.
      8) Plug in the finished animation!
      It's a lot more work, and a lot more steps - plus it requires really strong collaboration with the artist, but I think it yields the best results!

    Hi, we are making a pixel art metroidvania and we cant figure out, how to make it pixel perfect, because our pixels are jittering and boiling like crazy. We tried many pixel perfect cameras from the unity asset store and we tried to follow many videos and we really like your camera solution, but we cant figure it out how to do it. Can you describe the process how to make your camera solution please?

      @@InboundShovel Yea, I actually came from that video, because i was thinking that a comment on a new video have a better chance to get a response. Anyways, the problem is, that we dont know how to do your solution. (I am a designer and artist, so i have no idea really. And our programmer dont know either) This is our second game and first made in pixel art.
      We watched both, your video and the one made by aarthificial. And we just cant figure it out, how to do it in Unity. We have searched for the solution for days really and nothing works for us and we dont know why.
      So, maybe a youtube short, or even a full video about the details how you made the camera for your game would be awesome. This comment is really a last scream for help from us 😄
      Btw your content is really good, so keep going man

      Ah I see, I see!
      Yeah, first thing - don't feel discouraged! I spent /weeks/ figuring out how to get my camera working, and it was really tough to figure out what was going wrong the entire time - and that's the part of game development I'm actually good at, haha!
      I'll start working on a script for a youtube short covering some of the details of the camera, hopefully I can put together something to help give you some direction!
