I've been a tattoo artist for over 25 years and it's unfortunate videos like these come out depicting such things to add to the stereotype's they already have. I've tattooed teardrops on 70 year old women who lost their husband. I've tattooed spiderwebs which was also a popular design in the 1930's people I can assure you never spent a day in jail. I've tattooed plenty of crosses on people with very strong religious convictions not the type handed down by a judge. Thomas Edison who is arguably the creator of the modern electric coil tattoo machine tattooed 3 or 4 dots on his left arm to try out his new invention. Chances are if someone came me saying they wanted a design like any of the one's noted in this video to tell a story of their time incarcerated I'd assume they were some wanna be gang banger who got inspired by stories like these who probably never got so much as a speeding ticket

The point of this video is that these tattoos have become synonymous with gangs/prisons and an explanation of the possible meanings is offered. Of course anyone can get them but I think people from certain areas would associate at least one tattoo on the list with the meanings presented.

Depends if the tear drop is filled in / solid or just outlined - it also matters which eye they're under and if they are on the inner eye close to bridge of nose or outer eye closer to ear. There's a lot of nuances concerning these tattoos, and location / geographical location matters A LOT.

When not, it's still world wide known as a Nazi tattoo because of how similar they are. It has a new meaning now. Jorge I hope so. When I was a kid I went to Paris and started talking to This woman in the subway. She was really Nice and asked what country I was from and what it was like. She even helped us getting on the right train. I remember thinking she was really beatiful. She had one of those teardrop tatooos, and know I wonder if she lost someone or she was a criminal. All of these means rang true very deeply in the 70s-eaely 90s, but they're so common now & mass produces to pretty much lose theie meaning, like when you say a word so many times, it sounds useless/foreign know what I mean..
Being someone that had one of these tattoos(3 dots). You lose jobs, people want to fight, it always comes up in a conversation. I'm not about that life. My tattoo was not my choice, it was force upon me. I was in a severely abusive relationship. It will be dangerous and unwanted attention.
FYI In Denmark the three dot tattoo symbolises Faith, Hope and Love and has usually been worn by danish sailors and fishermen. My cousin had them and he used to be in the navy and then worked as a fisherman with his father. I have three dots in the crevis between my thumb and index finger. I have them as a momento of my cousin that died 12 years ago now, but as I knew what it means in other countries I placed it where I can "hide" it more easily
The 3 dots do not mean gang affiliation or prison, anywhere. I've heard people say it was love, peace and joy. I've heard people say it was because they had 3 children. I've never heard it was for the gang/prison thing... at all.
Yep, Im swedish and it stands for the same thing there. My granfather was a fishermen and has one salwell as me. I did mine when I was 13 and living in the street. Mine is also placed by the index finger. The placement is suppose to be there so when you shake your hand with somebody you can tell if they have one aswell.

Cobweb tattoo on left elbow also signifies having been a sniper. At the point of the elbow there is a marksmans cross. It denotes lying in wait so long that a spider can spin a web. Sometimes a spider is added for each confirmed kill. The cobweb has so many meanings in different areas.

Some how it has to be on another part of eye, and as I watched not filled tear on right sides means, you want to kill some one but not yet, after you do it they make it darker, it's hard to know for every jail they have there tattoes, it's better to ask them in normal maner on just ask tatto artist, but some of them are not dangures, and today you can have different colored once, I think jail tattoes are only in black...
It should also be noted that just because people have these tattoos does not immediately mean that they are evil or bad people. I’ve met more loving and respectful people with tattoos like this than I have people that are completely modification free. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover, or in this case it’s tattoos

Here in germany the web on the elbow is a well known Skinhead or Punk Tattoo, meaning the web sticks you to the scene forever and you can´t escape to a "regular lifestyle" ! An Ace Card with an 8 ball and a Skull ( sometimes in combination with a knuckleduster ) means "Outlaw for life" and that you´re gambling with your life till death. But today the majority of the people here don´t know Tattoo meanings besides some Nazi Codes like 88 or 18 or the infamous ACAB , you refer to "always carry a bible" was funny here we say it doesn´t mean "All Cops Are Bastards" ( of course it does^^ ), we say it means "Acht Cola Acht Bier" ( Eight Cokes Eight Beers ) :-) ! You missed a major tattoo mistake. ANY imagery from a biker gang (Hell's Angel's death head for example) If you aren't a member in good standing they WILL take that tattoo off. Using a metal grinder or blow torch. Depending on how generous they feel.

Where I live in South England, Each tear on the right represents a life you've taken, & on the left a tear for every close family member (blood relative or crime/gang related) you've lost while doing time. P U R P L E I got the 3 dots Ahah I got them while serving time In Los Padrinos after doing a hit for Mi Varrio . Getting the 5 dots means you have served time before the four dots that are made like a square form are the four walls and the dot in the middle represents the felon doing time .
Dang my friend who just got out of prison this august has some of these tattoos also when he came back from prison he had a bunch of tattoos and he doesn't act the same like when we met in freshman year. He went to prison for 3 years. He went to prison when freshman year almost ended near may and came back this year. Its amazing how much prison can change a person.

I have a spiderweb tattoo on my right elbow and nobody has ever given me any grief about it, including the many ex-cons I have known or worked with. Someone told me it meant you killed someone as a member of the AB. Someone else told me only the most freaked-out super-tough shot-callers in prison were allowed to have a spiderweb on an elbow. I asked a friend of mine about it before I got the tattoo. Hr had done some lengthy prison time and told me this: "You know what it really means? It means you have a spiderweb tattoo on your elbow. Nothing more."

i heard that with the tear drop one side indicates you killed someone and the other means someone close to you died. Not sure which was which, but also there was a difference whether the teardrop was filled in or left empty.
Each tear drop represents either a single person, or a rival gang as a whole. The tear drop unfilled means you've done fatal or bodily harm, typically a stabbing or a gunshot with the intention of death but the person survived. A filled in teardrop means a legit murder, the person didn't survive. I've absolutely never seen tear drops represented as "time done" or anything but murders in gang life.
Ice cube doesn't have a 3 dot tatoo you guys, its moles/skin tags. If you watch any interviews from the earlier years he explains that and says that is how some people recognize him too!

Most of these only signify doing time or that you live certain type of life. The only tattoos that could cause trouble are ones passed out by gangs for "putting in work". Or tattoos that signify loyalty to a gang could cause you trouble with that gang if you are not an authentic member, or with rival gangs. members.

tattoos represent alot of diverse messages or symbolic of the person wearing them...but most tell a story or status...I'm thinking of getting a horse's head tattoo on my shoulder...I may put it there because I love horses...but I may have it there because if I'm reincarnated ,I'd like to be a horse...but i would really put it there because I always wanted to become a jockey ...but basically it would be all of the above.... like I said different body markings represent different things.

In Denmark the three dot tattoo symbolises Faith, Hope and Love and has usually been worn by danish sailors and fishermen. My cousin had them and he used to be in the navy and then worked as a fisherman with his father. I have three dots in the crevis between my thumb and index finger. I have them as a momento of my cousin that died 12 years ago now, but as I knew what it means in other countries I placed it where I can "hide" it more easily

Yep, Im swedish and it stands for the same thing there. My granfather was a fishermen and has one salwell as me. I did mine when I was 13 and living in the street. Mine is also placed by the index finger. The placement is suppose to be there so when you shake your hand with somebody you can tell if they have one aswell.

Each tear drop represents either a single person, or a rival gang as a whole. The tear drop unfilled means you've done fatal or bodily harm, typically a stabbing or a gunshot with the intention of death but the person survived. A filled in teardrop means a legit murder, the person didn't survive. I've absolutely never seen tear drops represented as "time done" or anything but murders in gang life.

I have the 3 dot tattoo but for me it doesn't mean I was involved in any gang. For me it was a reminder that I cannot escape my past, that I am better in my present life than I was before , and to always be ready for what the future holds. Past,present,future.

tattoos represent alot of diverse messages or symbolic of the person wearing them...but most tell a story or status...I'm thinking of getting a horse's head tattoo on my shoulder...I may put it there because I love horses...but I may have it there because if I'm reincarnated ,I'd like to be a horse...but i would really put it there because I always wanted to become a jockey ...but basically it would be all of the above.... like I said different body markings represent different things.
