    6 years after her passing, this still reduces me to a tearful mess. As such I don't read the comments often but thanks everyone for sharing your experiences, feelings and opinions on the subject. It's a nice reminder we're all just emotional humans and it's okay to be one.

    Sometimes it's easy to forget that the core of Fry's character is a tragedy. A man from the past stuck in the future. Everyone he once loved is gone. It's moments like these that really highlight Futurama's charm.

    Fry's mother thought she was just dreaming about her son again. She never knew that was actually him and the last time they would see each other. Maybe that smile at the end was mother's intuition telling her that he's ok?

    • @hunterjardine7148
      @hunterjardine7148 2 ปีที่แล้ว +256

      I’d like to think so, in her time line she truly doesn’t know what happened to him. He could be dead for all she knows. So hopefully she knew he was okay after. It atleast gave her comfort which is nice. Imagine if our dreams of loved ones who are gone are really them just saying hi / goodbye but we truly don’t know it because dreams are just dreams to us.. crazy. Maybe next time I have a dream of a loved one who’s gone, I’ll take a moment to just embrace them and feel their skin, smell their smell.. one last time.

      Not the last time she'd see him though. The last time he'd see her. Not the same thing though.
      Let me tell you a story about a man named Lars. So she does see Fry again. At least his temporal paradox clone who goes back in time and is, for all intents and purposes, Fry. He spends a few years in the past living as Fry before Bender shows up.

      He missed her, he loves her and always has. He’s sorry he’s gone but where he is, he’s safe and though he can’t come back; he wants her to know that everything is okay.
      That hug is the bit of closure that he and his mother needed. Even in a dream; the smile Fry’s mother has tells everything. She understands.

      4 year old comment but whatever. That’s what got me the most. You could see him wanting to think of what to say but all that comes out is an embrace because all that needs to be said. It’s beautiful, it’s tragic, it’s perfect. The writers knew exactly what to do and the animators nailed it with that little moment of him thinking of what to say.

      +Kirsten Abel Yeah its surprising how hard some comedy cartoons can hit you emotionally. This episode, the episode Jurassic Bark where the ending shows Fry's dog getting old as he waits for him outside the pizza shop year after year.... I don't know if you've seen Rick and Morty but its the last cartoon youd expect to get emotional about but even with that show there are some super deep and emotional parts like the end of the Unity alien episode and the episode where Morty talks to his sister Summer about burying his own corpse in the backyard.Damn I cant wait for Rick and Morty season 3.

      +Kirsten Abel Now see I dont want to be that guy who ruins everything and honestly this point is mainly a personal problem I have with Benders Big Score. It's that all these emotional moments for Fry's family and Seymour are kind of made less impactful when Fry immediately comes back after being frozen because time travel.

    This scene always gets me when you look at it realistically: it's a 20 something year old young man (kid, really) embracing his mother who he hasn't seen in 1,000 years. It's a kid who is scared and shoved into this new world with no training, no awareness. Everyone he's ever known has died and he has to make do in this new world. And in this brief time, he gets to embrace his mother again, the woman who gave him life and cared for him more than any other. Never got to say goodbye, just gone.

    • @GoodMorningUSA1
      @GoodMorningUSA1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +207

      He was *frozen* for 1,000 years. He was not concious. So at the time of this airing, he hasn't seen his mom in 13 years.
      Secondly, his mom has always been portrayed as a horrible, un-caring mother and they just made her sweet her for the sake of emotion here.

    I'll never forget watching this episode for the first time in my girlfriend's bed, on her laptop. We were both 22, and while she had been asleep for hours, I was having regular trouble sleeping at night. We were binge watching Futurama for the first time around that month, and seemingly out of nowhere, this scene hit me...
    As it turned out, my mother had just died in a car accident almost a year before, when I was 21, and I had been doing my best to distract myself from the grief, the shock and the crippling loneliness I felt. I remember the tears that started to silently pour outta me... and while they still do, that night, it felt like a sign from somewhere otherworldly. I couldn't breathe or speak, I could only watch, and hear her voice and mine over Fry's and his mother's. A feeling that hasn't changed to this day.
    Thank you Futurama, for this gift. I love you Mom, I miss you everyday.

    • @MoonlightPrincess07
      @MoonlightPrincess07 6 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      ĞÆMƏŘ ŁÏVƏ Sadly. It's not about it being worth it. Yes Fry had to give everything to save the world in the future. But in bender' big score it was shown that no matter what Fry could no longer belong in the past. He had a whole other life. With the planet express crew, with all his adventures in the future. And with Leela. Once you've adjusted yourself to a whole other level of existence. It's hard to transition back. But I think it's sweet. That slowly but surely. Fry got to in a way. Make amends and final goodbyes to his family. Even if the Seymour one was too bittersweet to bear. And his old 'girlfriend' from the past adjusted almost better and on her own. Seeing as she's only been in like two episodes. But she didn't seem to ever care about what and who she left behind.
      My point being: In a scenario such as Fry's, you're going to have bittersweet feelings. But if you stay where you went. And can still have a final amending with your long-gone loved ones. Where you started. Doesn't seem
      All too horrible

    • @Mia_M
      @Mia_M 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@amyschildgamerlive4519 For Fry, I'm not sure the term worth it applies. He realized in the greater scheme of things he had a much larger purpose, and that the past was no longer where he belonged. Even when he went back, he never really was able to recapture what it was he lost. He still loved Leela and the people from the future, and as soon as he realized he was Lars, he knew his path. While he loved his family, he loved her more which says a lot.

      It’s because out of everyone Fry has lost and had to sacrifice the most. It was up to him to save the universe so he was forced out of his life and into one in which everyone he had ever met was long dead. He’s also a genuinely nice character because no matter how long he had to chase leela he never blamed her for not loving him he always just tried to improve HIMSELF to be with her and make her happy regardless. He is caught between belonging to a group of friends and belonging to his family but cannot choose both which I think really resonates with fans because we know that no matter what century he’s in he’ll be some level of heartbroken over someone.

    • @jungeezy
      @jungeezy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      I know this is years late, but for anyone out there reading this - the reason is because Fry is the only character who is able to ground the show into reality. As the viewer, we can (logically) relate most to Fry. In a narrative sense, we are Fry - we’re his emotions, his thoughts, his opinions, etc...
      So when something happen to Fry, you are able to empathize with him the most because he is essentially the “window character” that allows us to truly understand this mysterious universe that Futurama is housed in.
      Fry’s moments hurt so bad because we can genuinely relate to those types of moments in one form or another. Gotta add - that isn’t to say that other characters didn’t also have great moments (Leela’s parents, Zoidberg’s girlfriend, the professor’s yearning for a protege and a real son).

    What gets me every time: in Space Pilot 3000, Fry is a lot less mature and intelligent than in this episode, and cheers when he realizes he'll never see his parents again. But here, his mature side comes out when we realize that Fry did love his family, and they loved him, which they showed in their own, unconventional ways (Fry's dad was hard on him so he'd grow up tough, his brother admired him enough that he named his son after him, and his mother's lack of attention made him more independent.)

That night I said I was sorry, and he told me there was an envelope in my desk. He never told me in person, and he never told my mum, yet 3 days later I found a letter in a bundle of notebooks I hadn't touched in 5 years. That letter hit me like a bullet to the chest.

      My dad died in 04, and I've had the usual assortment of dreams you expect the grieving to have since. A few years ago though I was dating a girl into paganism and Wicca. She invited me to a day of the dead ritual with her circle. So, the point of the ritual was to connect to ancestors far back that you didn't know, and help them resolve themselves. Instead I ended up seeing my dad holding me telling me he was proud of me and that he was okay. My gf said he must have cheated and used the ritual to contact me instead of someone else. For obvious reasons I could never tell if the experience was a real supernatural vision, or if the whole ritual induced some sort of hypnosis-like dream where my mind told itself what I wanted to hear, but I cry even today thinking about it. I should point out that this wasn't the only spiritual-like experience I had with this girl though.

    Best episode of the series imo, just because of this scene. People say Jurassic Bark is the best because it deals with the loss of his dog and the tie to Hachiko. But this scene is so real. There are so many mothers that didn't get to tell their kids goodbye and that they loved them, or didn't get to just hold them. So many mothers that were lost, and so many children that have no idea what it's like to have a mother. And this scene just captures that love too perfectly. No words needed, just a warm embrace from the person that gave you life, that means more to you than anything else in the world.

      Probably not. Allot of times when you record voice over work you're by yourself and they splice it all together in post. So Billy West was probably just by himself saying his lines. I'm sure they lose impact without the full conversation, but I bet all the team cried when they saw the finished episode

      Voice actors getting emotional recording a scene is very common, because even if they’re doing it alone in a booth, the very concept of what they’re reading is an emotional sucker punch. I’ve read of a few voice actors straight up ugly crying at emotional scenes while they’ve been recording.

    I’m not an emotional person, but this video reminded me of the last time I saw my great grandmother. She was a month away from 98 and dementia had taken away a lot from her. So much so that it had been nearly 4 years since she could remember me, and a lot of my cousins too. It was hard because I knew her really well. The last day I saw her, she was doing really bad. And we all talked and laughed together, we knew that it was probably not going to be long before she left this world. When it was time to go she said to me words that I will never forget, “Bye Bye, Colby... I love you sugar.” That was the first time in 4 years that she had remembered me. And I looked in her eyes and saw the look of recognition in them. It was also the first time that she told me that she loved me, so that made it even more special. I hugged her with tears in my eyes, as she said; “Now don’t you forget to come see me again!” That was the last day I saw her conscious. A few days later she went into a coma and never woke up. And I believe that this was the very video that was in my recommendation a few days later. There was one thing that she told me years ago that blesses me to this day, “Honey, one day Nannaw is going to be in Heaven and won’t be there to give you hugs and candy, and other things. But one thing I want you to remember is, when you see a lot of red birds it means that someone is thinking of you in Heaven, so when you see a red bird, there’s an angel or a Spirit near.” The day that my aunt called and said that she’d died, I sat on the front porch on the verge of tears and I saw something in my tree, I said; “Can it be?” And I threw a rock in the thick leaves, and a large group of red birds flew out of it. I fell to my knees and prayed ‘Thank you Lord for the time that I had her here with me.’ And almost every day since, I have always seen at least one red bird. I know the red bird thing is just a superstition but it brought me comfort and allowed me to accept that she had left this world, and how I can’t wait to see her again one day in the great kingdom of God.
    Whoever reads this have a great day and tell someone important to you that you love them.

Did alot of wrong to both of them, literally the shittiest son you could want, stealing, robbing and getting into stuff i shouldnt have. I kinda dont regret it because it built me into the strong willed person i think i currently am.

    The part where Fry turns in disbelief and says “Mom”… always gets me, as someone that has had a borderline estranged relationship with my own mom, due to being forced to live on my own, it just resonates. There’s a part of you that feels hurt by the days you missed, the holidays they had without you… but, the damage is done and at the end of the day being held by the person that made you doesn’t take away from the pain that you’ve endured, but it makes you feel whole and like the pain can actually go away even for just that moment.
    Literally everytime I watch this scene I explode in tears…

    I lost my mother to cancer when I was 10. I've only had a couple dreams like this that I can remember, with the most recent happening the other night. In the dream she walked into the house, we hugged and I immediately started balling my eyes out and telling her everything I could (even though it sounded like gibberish with the crying) until I woke up a few moments later. I actually had a tear in my eye when i woke up too... that really hit me and I'm still thinking about it days later. I miss her

      If there is something else after death, she is looking out for you and always will. You never truly die when you have children. She will always live through you.

    In terms of most emotional moments/suckerpunches in Futurama for me its:
    1) this
    2) Luck of the Fryrish
    3) jurassic bark

    This, Leela meeting her parents, and then Fry finding about his dead nephew- I love this show

      And I love the cast members, especially David Herman. He might be the least known member of the cast, but he’s one of them. The way how he and Tress MacNeille did Leela’s parents convinced me how great he is.

    as a person who can relate to this, I've lost my mother a while ago and it still hurts, treasure what you have with your parents when you're young. never take them for granted you never know when u won't ever see them again. seeing this episode strikes at my heart cuz I would probably do the same thing that fry did. I miss my mother and have so much I want to tell her, like how I'm finally graduating highschool, or am finally moving out soon to start my own life. ugh it sux.

    After losing my brother a few years back, this scene means a lot to me. The only place I get to see him is in my dreams. Sometimes I get to hug him and stuff. This scene makes me bawl my eyes out.

    I just rewatched this episode, forgetting that this was the ending. Absolutely incredible writing.

    The Seymore episode made me miss my dog. This episode made me call my mom.
