My ultimate dream is to be at least half as happy as the Belcher's are as a family. The movie really showed how hard Linda and Bob work for each other and support one another. Honestly base your relationship on Bob and Linda and you'll love long and happy together
I’ve discovered Bob’s Burgers on 2020, and might be the best thing I could ever find in this horrible year. I’m just in love the family, and for me, it’s one of the best families. Better than non animated ones also.
The entire point of the show is nobody’s perfect, families aren’t perfect, business never run perfectly, and I mean just look at the art style it’s genius! It’s all about the love and acceptance
Yes, definitely! The recent episode about Louise and the house spider made me tear up. Linda so supportively and compassionately affirmed Louise's unique, unconventional and sometimes misunderstood personality when others were scared and intimidated by it. The spider parallel fit so nicely. So good 🥲
I actually really loved this analysis. I'm going to share it with a few folk I think will enjoy it. We're a bunch of Bob's Burgers fans. The family interactions are so good. My hubby and I were just commenting how Bob makes faces and quiet sounds of disapproval when Tina goes off on butts or Jimmy Jr or boys, but he never actually tells her to stop. In the episode the hormone-imus he actually counsels her about going to a kissing party in a very thoughtful, caring, and accepting way. The first season had some bits of tone I disliked, but there's so many great episodes. Like... 95% of the episodes are great. Like, every single story arc in the episode Bob Actually is so wholesome. Bob's Burgers honestly makes me think of The Addams Family way more than the Simpsons . Odd and unique, but loving and supportive. Even when there are conflicts within the family, the resolutions are so sincere and honest. I love Bob's Burgers so much.
Bobs burgers really has a way of touching you with how real the characters feel. Gene is by far the most annoying and my least favorite, but episodes centered around him can still be some of The funniest or most heart felt. Like "itty bitty diddy committee", "stand by gene" or "roller? I hardly know her"
@@phlpcockrell omg yes. Gene was the worst character to me for the first few seasons. I just skipped Gene centered episodes if rewatching. But I think they've really dialed down the annoying bit as they developed his character. Stand by Gene is one of my fave episodes now.
I often make references to Bob's burgers and I often ask my brother if he watches the show (bc the reference is much funnier if you know what you're doing) and he said that yeah he's seen some episodes but it's not really his style; too tame. And while I recognize that everyone is entitled to their own tastes and opinions, I just felt kinda let down. I find it to be such a good show, in so many ways. Sometimes bc it is relatively tame (compared to something like south park, which I know he used to really like)...but not always. Bob's burgers still talks about quite adult problems and themes. Either way, I really like the show and I wish more people in my immediate life appreciated it more. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk
I don't know. I think people who think bob's burgers is "tame" are just edgelords who think something can only be funny if it's making fun of someone. Not them of course ive never met an edgelord that can make fun of themselves
@@od3910 or.maube they just don't find that funny or entertaining, not everyone it's an antagonist just cause they don't share the same taste on something so trivial as a tv show
I like that it's a show about a family that feels like a natural family. They definitely have disagreements and fights and stuff, but they always love each other and they support each other.
Feel like some of the issue here is also like a... Growth over time sort of thing, in art. Like how the standards of fight scenes have gotten so much higher over time that an episode of Star Trek original series looks absolutely ridiculous during the fight scenes. Back when they originally came out, the fight scenes weren't as good anywhere, so you didn't have to do more to communicate the same point, if that makes sense. The realistic convos on Bob's burgers retroactively make the convos on Simpsons feel worse
I think Bob's Burgers is the most realistic and accurate portrayal of family dynamics on TV. Maybe it's because my family is also super weird, but yeah. All the things you said! And this is coming from a person that thinks season 4 of the Simpsons is fairly close to a perfect season of comedy.
I think everyone eventually becomes super weird around the people who they feel most comfortable around. The dynamic I have with my parents is stiff and, for lack of a better term, show-offy, because I've never felt comfortable around them. They were abusive in my childhood and I hold them at arm's length (as opposed to completely cutting them off) as an adult for familial political reasons. But, my best friend of eight years? My partner who I live with and love? More inside jokes and weird turns of phrase than I could ever list off. I think it's just part of letting more of your authentic self show, being more comfortable just letting the random, whacky ideas that flow through your brain come out. And so, yeah, I think being weird with your family isn't really weird at all and is part of the reason why the Belchers are so relatable :)
I really like how you can sorta tell that Bob's Burgers has more than just the straight white male perspectives in the writing room. Like the underground gay Christmas club episode that had a Todrick Hall musical number.
With the Simpsons four of the five main family members have a relationship that’s designed to work antagonistically to create conflict. Bart winds up Lisa and Homer, and causes trouble for Marge either through this or for her in some other way. Homer makes a selfish decision Marge and the kids have to follow along with or deal with the results of. Lisa’s soapbox tendencies can clash with Homer, most prominently in Lisa the Vegetarian (although that episode does have a moral about tolerance from and for both sides). In contrast the Belchers while they have different personalities it feels more like a proper family and less a conflict generator. Bob is the most practical, Linda lives more in the moment, Tina is a hormonal teenager, Gene has no filter and Louise puts on a front of bravado because she doesn’t like opening up emotionally. Yet they start and end episodes with affection for each other even when some of them come into conflict with each other. You can see why Bob and Linda are together, as opposed to Homer and Marge where she’s more give and he’s more take. Both families are also poor, with storylines around their lack of money and ways to get more or finding alternative solutions. For the Simpsons it’s more likely to be played for laughs, not helped by Homer’s extensive and well populated work history and his very on again off again employment at the power plant (tying into his selfishness). The less than optimal condition of the house (it’s even used for a gag in an early THoH were the lead paint it’s covered in made it an effective nuclear bomb shelter), the school as well is a punching bag of too many budget crises jokes. For the Belchers it plays in more subtly. The kids don’t have phones, Bob has a flip phone, the household doesn’t have a lot in terms of technology. Whether they’ll make the rent is a recurring problem and in the movie the bank loan covering the restaurant equipment being due within the week is a big worry for Bob.
Part of the reason why bob's burgers is my new favorite family adult cartoon is because it genuinely feels like they care and love eachother which includes emotional touching moments. Like I enjoyed family guy and American dad early on because they cared but now in the newer seasons it's like everyone is practically lying, cheating, and constantly at each other's throats.
Simpsons was the most relatable family at the time it was created because what was the norm was sitcoms like Full House that depicted family as picture perfect.
Honestly I love how realistic the show is in portraying what having a real family is like and I just love the humour how it’s subtle and not over the top, also love how they treat Bob as a well meaning dad that’s hardworking
The personalities of the families are created from very different positions too. The writer of the simpsons relates to all the characters, and imparts a piece of himself in all the characters, which is a great way to show disparity between people in a linked way, so we can see both sides. Bobs on the other hand is based on the writers experience with people he knows, totally different personalities that he probably likes and naturally get along with each other. If you're a fan of the mbti sides of the mind and such, you could think of marge and lisa being the main ego, and homer and bart being the unconscious and subconscious personalities tied to the main. Where as in bobs burgers, there is some overlap xntp/entj/isfp but tina and linda are wild cards inxp/exfp, being particularly dull and exciting respectively to unbalance the dynamic and make it feel more lifelike. I really liked your video, thanks very much!
I never appreciated bobs burgers until I got really high and was terrified by louise but I died laughing because I was thinking about her in real life and I was eye widening, she's terrifying and then I applied this to all the characters and I built my own reality where they could really exist and it was a lot of fun like as I got high and started overthinking I learned why Bob's burgers was so awesome
I'm actually kinda sad because I know that Bob's Burgers won't last forever. It's just one of those shows where I 100 percent wish they would keep making episodes forever because it has never had to resort to shock value or quickly outdated memes like Family Guy. I really liked American Dad until it started following suit. You can make adult shows without it being overly graphic and using unneeded swear words. I wrote a short play back in high school that was inspired by the family dynamic this show has and people loved it when it was performed.
I always thought it better for a show to finish when it's good than keep going until it's bad. The flipside of "always leave them wanting more" is "never leave them wanting less", so saying goodbye to the Belchers at their prime would be sad, but ultimately the best way
Eh that's kind of a lose lose situation. It'd be amazing to see you're favourite shows go on forever, but the thing is no matter how good a show is, Flanderisation will eventually happen. The writers will eventually run out of ides and jokes for the characters.
@@CormDaCrow or Even ofnthe show doesnt change mucho and still mantain it's core since seasons 1, the public can change and decide that the series went stale and it's boring, happens all the time and it's one angel that pushe flanderization too

One of my favourite kinds of bobs burgers episodes are the ones where it’s just the belchers in their home talking to each other. Like in season 6 episode 1, where Bob and Linda tell the kids how they met, and then Louise Gene and Tina take turns making up stories about why they thought would have happened if bob didn’t have a moustache. Genuinely sweet and funny and it shows they’re a real human family
After about season 5 the simpsons stopped feeling human to me. But weren't supposed to feel as real or grounded as other shows. The minute homer tried to jump Springfield Gorge, failed, survived the fall, was picked up by an ambulance, dropped from it, fell again and survived again is when the simpsons embraced comedic absurdity to me. Bob's burgers feels more natural to compare to King of the Hill than the simpsons.
4:50 For that homer and Lisa episode I think the premise and the start with homer telling her that gambling is ok and whatnot, I think it'd be more natural if that was a Bart and homer focused story
well done! You've made some really great points and now I know why I couldn't really connect to the simpsons as much, because they don't even try to connect with each other. It actually is like people from LA - just waiting for their next line to come
I wonder if the age of The Simpsons as a franchise is a factor here. A lot of the stuff you mention liking about Bob's Burgers in comparison seems like it's a feature of a newer batch of adult-friendly if not necessarily adult-oriented cartoon shows. I mean, The Simpsons has definitely changed over time, but I wonder how much of its fundamental DNA is still built of stuff from the early 90s playbook.
i do love them both but bob's burgers is the only tv series that i am really addicted i watch it like everyday it's like a companion simpsons i watch when i'm bored, bobs burgers i watch all the time
I think the part I love the most about Bob, is that he has Gomez Addams' energy, you know? He's a loving father and husband but he also is flawed and silly when he lets go, he listens to others and is a kind yet petty man when provoked, he feels, like the video says, very human
Great overview man. If I may, I find Homer to be relatable sometimes because often Homer isn't aware of how he could improve. I as a dad can relate to both in different ways. There are times when I realize I'm blindsided by my own flows like Homer and ocassionally Homer does become aware he's not doing right. The Simpsons is a more exaggerated world. It has no subtly which I always keep in mind but when he does realise finally he's hurt the feelings of his kids, he doesn't know really how to ammend but does try even if in his absurd ways. One line that always strikes me is from the Christmas episode that I consider their half hourndebut. Lisa points out to her aunts that her dad shares the same frailties as any human being and expresses they wouldn't talk about him like that in front of her about him. There is alot of good Dad and daughter episodes within the Simpsons. My favorite is when we see a full grown Lisa of the future standing by her dad over some pig cufflinks even though it means the would be wedding is off and at the end it returns to the present and her and Homer walk away from the camera and she's excited to hear him telling her about all the fun he had while she was occupied with a glimpse of the future. There is also the episode where he exhausts himself do she can have a pony. Homer is a buffoon but that at times can be relatable. Someimes a dad frustrates himself hoping to get it right and fail alot of times before soemthing connects after every attempt prior. Bob's world is less absurd but I as a newcomer to Bob's Burgers also find relatable things about him. The want for a more wholesome enviroment. The ability to not over react and err caution when conflicted with over something his kids have done that he wished they hadn't. This is not to diminish the great points made here. BOB'S Burgers is really good and I look forward to watching every season for better familiarity.
In the 90's family life was boring so the Simpsons was trying to pep it up a bit. Now there is almost nothing left resembling a family, people today live more like roommates, rarely ever talking when there isn't a screen in their face. Bob's Burgers is in a fictional world where everyone isn't glued to a screen and they actually talk to each other. A fantasy still held by some.
I think one key difference is the fact that early Simpsons bought into being a cartoon. It wasn't meant to be realistic, but to be a heart warming sitcom that had cartoon elements....
I think what I didn’t like about other cartoons like the Simpsons is the way lines are delivered. Especially with the Simpsons where it feels robotic and unrealistic to me. No offence of course if you enjoy that. But Bob’s Burgers has such realistic speech. Bob especially is always stumbling over words and messes up sometimes and does awkward chuckles it’s hilarious. Very human feeling characters. Really feels like how my family talks and that’s definitely a reason why we still love the show 10 years after discovering it
I adore Bob's Burgers, and thoroughly think that it's a better show than modern day Simpsons, but even from this perspective, I feel like you were a little harsh to the Simpsons examples here, especially considering that it's a totally classic episode- a comparison with a modern Simpsons episode would have felt fairer. The Simpsons examples still felt really natural to me too considering their contexts- Lisa not knowing sports and making an effort to relate to Homer in that first scene, for example- it's completely in character for both of them.
The two series are a byproduct of there times.. in the 80-90 parents and kids wasn't shown to be friends as much as they do now.. due to age and culture different is now ...... Bob and his kids are friends and pretty open to each other .. Homer and his kids are more of the old parents are above there kids and they try to control em
i agree with your choice to start this video off with The Simpsons.. i feel like Bob's Burgers truly lives up to the lost potential of what The Simpsons could've been, and i feel like there where the two contrast is what truly defines why i like Bob's Burgers so much
i started watching BB only this year and i immediately fell in love with the writing. characters always feel grounded and real, and the family members actually love each other. another important thing is the lack of occult crap, wich shows like american dad or the simpsons are overfilled with.
I've been watching the entire series of Bob's Burgers in a daily basis over the last 6 months or so and I strongly agree that the characters are deeper and more interesting and likeable than characters are in most adult-aimed sitcoms. While the personalities are painted in fairly broad strokes, they are able to learn and grow without losing their core traits, making choosing a favorite character much harder than just whoever you laugh at the most (Homer).
I remember getting so turned off of the whole hateful family dynamic that was seen in later Family Guy and quite a few other comedies. Like, most of the time it's undeserving or just unnecessary. Bob's Burgers just threw that out the window. You don't have to have a show full of spiteful and angsty characters to get people interested. Being toxic is understandable for some shows to get a point across but when it's done just due to laziness then that's just lame.

hmm i dunno a health inspector/ex trying to ruin your business is VERY real. Just look it up that's a truth stranger than fiction thing; the extend people go through to sabotage exes is scary but true to life.
So good 🥲

Hi No Face
I feel like I've stumbled across another criminally underrated channel.
"Lights out kids, time for bed. We're good parents!"
- Linda, spouting facts
It is refreshing to see an animated family that is not just a dysfunctional mess.
i’ve always appreciated how they cast always recorded together since they bounce off each other so easily when other shows don’t do that
I often make references to Bob's burgers and I often ask my brother if he watches the show (bc the reference is much funnier if you know what you're doing) and he said that yeah he's seen some episodes but it's not really his style; too tame.
7:00 I agree
Bob's burgers have easily became one of my favourites since Disney plus added it and I finally got to watch it!
Yeah I've been binging ever since it came to Disney+
Me too☺️
I watched Bob’s burgers when I was lonely studying abroad and it made me feel very good

I only started watching this from the beginning again this week. I love Bob and Louise is iconic.

Wow that secret burger joke was really good!
This was a great explanation, I've been studying characters and trying to learn differences of realistic vs robotic
I'm unfortunately behind on the show. But Bob's Burgers is astounding.
That burger joke was not only clever but also surprisingly insightful
4:04 did you say Bob Burgers? was that a slip of the tongue or were you referencing the time when Teddy thought that was bobs first and last name? 😆
Oh, uhh...that was totally a reference. Definitely 100% intentional. Totally.
Was THAT the secret burger joke?
Can we just all take a moment to appreciate how hilarious that secret recipe joke was lmao?!
Simpsons was the most relatable family at the time it was created because what was the norm was sitcoms like Full House that depicted family as picture perfect.
It’s the best thing ever when you hear one of the Bob’s Burgers cast holding back their laughter while performing their lines.
There:very little videos on Bless the Harts. With its second season order definitely has potential to be the next KOTH/Bob’s Burgers.
Honestly I love how realistic the show is in portraying what having a real family is like and I just love the humour how it’s subtle and not over the top, also love how they treat Bob as a well meaning dad that’s hardworking
This was a great video! I really like hearing people talk about how much and why they love something I also love.
I have never heard of bob's burgers but i might watch it now, thanks!
Like I've said to the other commenter, you can skip season one, you won't miss much
The personalities of the families are created from very different positions too.
It is such a dear show...thanks for this
Great work, Bret! Thanks! 💖 Especially for the secret burger joke. 😛
@@CormDaCrow or Even ofnthe show doesnt change mucho and still mantain it's core since seasons 1, the public can change and decide that the series went stale and it's boring, happens all the time and it's one angel that pushe flanderization too
In worf worf part 2 I when they family thinks they are going to die and they keep repeating they love each other feels so sweet sad and real. One of the many moments of the show that makes me tear up 🥺
Best part about Bob's Burgers? Bob and Linda are like normal parents, not TV sitcom parents.
Bob’s burgers show that it shouldn’t always have dark jokes, it’s refreshing to see a family that actually love each other.
I love your analysis on this topic! 👌
I started watching the show a few years ago and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Thank you very kindly for this, especially the 'secret sauce' joke, subtle but very clever.

Great video, totally agree BB is far superior to the Simpsons, especially these days.
That secret recipe joke had me rolling on the floor!
You put my feelings into words so well!
i do love them both but bob's burgers is the only tv series that i am really addicted
i watch it like everyday it's like a companion
simpsons i watch when i'm bored, bobs burgers i watch all the time
futurama comes close too
I think the part I love the most about Bob, is that he has Gomez Addams' energy, you know?
The best part about the show is that Bob genuinely loves his family and actively acts through his love and adoration for them
In the 90's family life was boring so the Simpsons was trying to pep it up a bit.
The best thing about bobs burgers is even after 11 seasons, they still haven't made a clip show.
That secret recipe joke had me laughing so hard I coughed up my tonsils! XD
Really feels like how my family talks and that’s definitely a reason why we still love the show 10 years after discovering it
New sub! Super excited to see what other content you create !
i fuckgin LOVE THE SECRET Bruger joke!!!
The Simpsons examples still felt really natural to me too considering their contexts- Lisa not knowing sports and making an effort to relate to Homer in that first scene, for example- it's completely in character for both of them.
yea this show is good. i like that the characters accept each other's quirks and don't pick on each other. it's really much better than most
The two series are a byproduct of there times.. in the 80-90 parents and kids wasn't shown to be friends as much as they do now.. due to age and culture different is now ......
Bob and his kids are friends and pretty open to each other ..
Homer and his kids are more of the old parents are above there kids and they try to control em
i agree with your choice to start this video off with The Simpsons.. i feel like Bob's Burgers truly lives up to the lost potential of what The Simpsons could've been, and i feel like there where the two contrast is what truly defines why i like Bob's Burgers so much
I loved the secret recipe joke at the start!😂
dude that burger joke was amazing!
3:17 thank you for saying it.
At first i judged it then after 2 hiit's of watching it i couldn't wait for more
i started watching BB only this year and i immediately fell in love with the writing. characters always feel grounded and real, and the family members actually love each other.
another important thing is the lack of occult crap, wich shows like american dad or the simpsons are overfilled with.
Could you imagine Bob trying to add a "secret recipe"?
Both shows Great North and Bob's Burgers are showcases to awesome family protrayals ad natural dialogs :)

Simpson's in its prime was a product of its time which has stuck around well passed its expiration date.
