  • Obsidian can be found wherever there has been volcanic activity. That's right... obsidian is just lava that has cooled very, very quickly! Natalie unboxes a couple different types and explains everything you need to know about #obsidian.

So, obsidian is a gemstone, but one without a crystal structure? Cool. Rapidly cooled, that is.

I have a piece of obsidian from Hawaii with flecks of green in it that only show up when light hits it just right. Could you do a video on why obsidian can range so much in color and appearance and (specifically) what could cause iridescence in it?

I learned in the old times, the stone age, they used to use it as weapons or to cut. I learned that they can be all sorts of colors. I know there can be some big ones, small ones, and medium ones. They were also used to look at the sun.

Rustle around the bag enough, get some static electricity going, if it can make a full ring reaction, you might lose your finger to a small portal in there as well.

Loved the show. I love rocks and have since i was a child. Stuffed my nose full of tiny rocks while playing outside in our dirt driveway - about 63 years ago lol. Was telling my granddaughter the tale cause we watched a tv show (9 1 1) and a little boy shoved a toy car up his nose. Took geology classes in college and wished i had made it a career. Gid bless you all!

Really enjoy these videos you put out. When I was a kid I was really into looking at all the rocks I found in the creek behind my house to see if it was something rare and I liked seeing the big gem stones at museums. One critique I have and its no biggie....is that the videos seem dark...like the lighting or brightness is dark...I crank the brightness on my laptop/phone and TH-cam gets super bright white, but the videos are still dark, and have a in the shadow appearance. IDK no big deal :)

    From my grade four class!
    What we learned is:
    1. There are different types of obsidian
    2. There are many different colours of obsidian
    3. There are many shapes of obsidian
    4. Obsidian is a rock that happens when a volcano erupts (igneous)
    5. Obsidian was used for weapons and tools
    6. There can be some rocks that are soft and some rocks that are hard. Obsidian was 5
    7. Some obsidian that is really sharp can be used as scalpels in the medical field
    Our questions were:
Where did you find the obsidian?
What is the one that looks like an egg called? (grey and white one)
