  • Very small 4 point show out of Cobb Ga on 08/30/23. Ever wondered how threatre rigging is set up? Well lets watch as Travis out of Atlanta gives us a tour. Apologies, in the video we reference the yellow ribbons that you walk on as battens, just know those yellow slits are called ribbons not battens.

    I know literally nothing about rigging. But I'm hoping to start picking up extra work with a production company soon.
    This video is a really cool glimpse into the spaces that very few people get to see. Thanks for this.

    The theater at my high school back in 2007-2008 had a fly house like that and I remember rigging and working curtains. I miss doing that stuff sometimes. I will say the Bridge was way scarier to me than the fly house and walking on the ribbons. The bridge we had was over the seating area and was nothing more than a catwalk suspended by wire above the drywall ceiling. made me sweaty every time.

    The pipes that fly in and out on the fly rail system are also called battens. So be aware of that should any confusion occur

      Yes I meant to say ribbons lol thank you for the clarification!

      So many thoughts:
      1. I never allow rigging pipes to be loose in the grid. they can roll into a channel and fall.
      2. Even in an easy out, I require calling out/communication each time a point is being lowered.
      3. Yes, ribbons not battens.
      4. That is a beautiful clean grid. I love it. I would dearly like to know why some ribbons are marked in red.
      5. When you wrapped the cleat for the cable pic, you only need one wrap low/one wrap high/ one wrap low/twist and tug. I think i saw 2 extra wraps. Also, i appreciate you taking the time to wrap the loose tail. Gold Star!

      "Apron" is the edge of the stage. I've been doing this stuff for forty years, kinda wish I'd gone into rigging rather than lighting. And kinda wish I wasn't 70 so I could change careers!

    When this was installed, how did the rigging crew know that the grid deck would safely support the load? It appears that whatever was being supported by this installation was being carried by 4 points, but are those points attached to the grid and designed to be load bearing? I'm just starting to learn this stuff, and these are the types of things I think of when I see this, so it's a genuine question.

    • @gusokeeffe5302
      @gusokeeffe5302 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The grid is built on top of a bunch of supportive steel I-beams across that runs across the fly loft, they're either side of the gap the droppers go through, the pips are being used as load spreader bars. We run our spreader bars across the area of ribbons held up by the I-beams at work as opposed to across the dropper gap.

    I was hoping he was going to show us what he let down. You will not find me up there. I have been up about that same height on a side, but quickly decided it was not for me. The theater in question did not have the ribbons in place. I was on a theater tour and they offered a few of us the chance to step out on the edge of a side where tie off's for ropes ended. As a friend of a band that does national tours and hire riggers like these in every city, these guys get a lot of respect from me. As a former volunteer fire fighter, I have been in high places. Still don't like it though.

    • @worldwiderigging
      @worldwiderigging  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes most theaters don't have the ribbons, this is a new style theatre but yea none the less, moving around up there is always fun. Give it a try again, maybe the second time around will be better!

    I'm not understanding how that little piece of string tied around the end of the pipe up in the battons is going to prevent that cable from sliding off the pipe if it's vibrating enough to spin sideways.

    • @worldwiderigging
      @worldwiderigging  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yea it sounds pretty funky but you'd be surprised how little resistance it needs to keep it in place.
