2022 Suzuki GSX S1000 GT+ Review - Have Suzuki Made Its Best Sport-Touring Bike Yet?

  • Criticize Suzuki all you want for recycling the K5 GSX-R1000 engine over and over again, but when something works, why change it? Instead of wasting time and money developing a new engine, Suzuki poured its energy into making one hell of a sport-touring bike - the 2022 GSX-S1000GT+. Boasting bodywork and wind protection developed in the wind tunnel, a comfortable seating position, big saddlebags, some must-have electronics - and yes, that awesome engine - Suzuki might have outdone themselves this time.

    Idk why people would complain that an engine is used in other bikes. The more of the same engines made, the larger the pool of parts for them now and in the future.

      A lot of people hate not having exclusivity and constantly changing/updating parts. The Dodge Challenger and Nissan GTR are excellent examples that people love to hate on for not changing much. Those that like them keep buying them in droves despite not changing much over the last fifteen years. Personally I like it when vehicles maintain a design and just update necessary parts rather than constantly redesigning from ground up. I think Chevrolet was one of the best at this for a long time. Their 5.3 and 6.0 motors were used in everything they sold. Parts are plentiful

  • @PaulA-dl7hs
    @PaulA-dl7hs ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Thank you for your review of this bike. It was the final deciding factor for buying it. You made a few comments that need correction that will help sell the bike. First off, the front brakes. They are mushy, but not because of the master cylinder or rubber lines, but because Suzuki and Brembo chose to put very weak brake pads on the bike. After changing the pads to an after market pad which is basically the one used for the GSXR-1000, the front brake is perfect for an agressive sport tourer. 1/4 pull vs. all the way to the handlebars, with plenty of feel. Next, the stock tires suck. Price them out and you will see they are the least expensive tires you can buy for this bike. Switched to a real sport touring tire (Michelin Road 5GT) and now we have feel, confidence, and a tire that was built to last many many miles (twice the price, but well worth it). Finally, your evaluation of the seat is spot on in terms of lack of comfort, but your explanation is exactly the opposite of why it is so uncomfortable. It is way too soft on the sides of the seat, causing your tailbone to sink in and basically roast your privates. The inexpensive "optional style seat" for $189 is a world of improvement and takes the bike from a 1 hour and rest to an all-day sport tourer. For the minor upgrades the bike is a steal. Also, don't waste your time on the "suzuki touring windscreen". It just redirects the wind onto your torso, and actually creates additional helmet buffeting. Stock screen is acceptable with a high quality helmet, and maybe some music. The aftermarket will catch up eventually and create something a little better. The saddle bags are HUGE, as they have no pipe restriction, and easily become luggage for a trip. TFT screen is incredibly visible. Best I've ever used. Clear and bright day or night. Power and handling are just right. Pulls right off the bottom like a V twin. Quite a surprise compared to the naked version. Rev's to the moon. Buy it, you will like it.

      Actually it's 142 HP, so that means the Suzuki has a whopping 8 HP more.
      The Suzuki is geared way too short and is too high strung. The 1000SX, the bike Suzuki obviously tried to clone, just look at the fairing, is torquey all through the midrange and has plenty of get up and go. It's better suited for its purpose unlike the parts bin Suzuki which looks cheap in person. But hey, people love the Suzuki's swingarm, because we all know that makes it a better bike.

    I love continuity from manufacturers. Updating and adding minimal features is great. Constant redesigns and a hundred different engines is annoying. I don’t see an issue with using the same engine in multiple platforms. When it works it works. Even down to little parts it makes sense to me. Good example is Toyota. They have been using the exact same cruise control lever in all of their vehicles for more than 20 years. My wife’s 2020 CHR uses it. Our old 18 4Runner used it. My old 06 Tacoma and 99 Tacoma used it. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

I've done it on my Street Triple, but by half-way back my neck hurts from holding my head in the wind. @@sToRmZzr123 The SXR is a balancershaft-less numb-wrists buzzomatic. And gets flighty at any speed where the marginal additional power gained from ditching the balancer is even noticeable (The S1000RR is awesome, though...). The XR requires a half-frozen, draggy steering head (aka steering damper) in order to perform something as simple as going down the road in a semi straight fashion....
      More seriously: Both are good bikes. All new bikes are, and have been for the past two decades. A year or two into ownership, once you're used to each bike's quirks and have had time to remedy the ones you find annoying (say brake pads and tires, and perhaps an aftermarket shock, on the Suzuki if sport/track is a priority), I bet most people will be less annoyed with the GSX-S than the XR. Even if the initially "easier to ride fast" XR may seem more impressive on a short test ride. That's what one meticulous step at time forwards over twenty years; as opposed to 10 steps in all manners of whatever-is-currently-fashionable directions, every single year; almost always end up resulting in. It may be easier to look impressive, on showroom floors and bike reviews, by focusing on hitting every conceivable fashionable bucket list hot-point. But most of the stuff is just chaff. And by distracting from slower, more fundamental, improvements, it ends up ultimately coming up a bit short.
      The beauty of almost all Suzukis, is that they don't try to appear to be more than they are. They wear their compromises on their sleeves. Allowing you time to get used to them, then either work around them; or make some mods once you have enough experience with the bike to know more specifically what you miss. While modern BMWs have become the opposite: All manners of electronics and complications allowing for a spectacular facade. But then, over time, the annoyances start being noticed. And those are annoyances which are harder to rectify. Both because they tend to be more fundamental (lack of balancers and stable geometries....), and because the soup of sensors and electronics and other complications, means it becomes almost impossible to change anything, without risking the whole cardhouse crashing down.

    The lack of cornering ABS & TC isn't really a big deal, but the lack of center stand is. It's a touring bike with a chain drive... and you'll have to clean and lube that chain on the road. Why can't some manufacturers get this simple fact? sigh

      The GSX-S1000GT+ is already on Corbin's list to create a touring seat with backrest, and probably heating, as soon as they can get their hands on one out in California. The rubber coated passenger grab rails are very likely bolted on, not welded, so we can expect rear top case and passenger support within the year from Shad and GIVI.

    • @MTBrider26
      @MTBrider26 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No doubt the aftermarket will jump to the rescue. But what one could probably infer if Suzuki doesn't sell a top box option, or offer prodigious passenger comfort in their saddle maybe they are trying to tell you something about their intentions for this bike or advise you of its inherent weaknesses? If they could sell something as an accessory they would. Not to do so makes zero sense commercially. The questions I would ask any dealer would be, Is the rear subframe up to the task of a passenger and top box and/or is stability compromised if both are carried? Sure you could fit an aftermarket luggage topbox and rack.....but the real question is should you? There are so many other sport touring bikes that are able to be fitted with full luggage systems why would l second guess Suzuki's highly paid and more knowledgeable motorcycle engineers effectively jerryriging a retrofit for this bike?

    Great engine, yes!
    I know you can't bit the price for a sport tourer but electric windshield is not there and I really think that there it is not comfortable for a passenger, the pegs are too high and the pillion seat does not look comfortable enough for long journeys.
    I believe that the other contenders in the category ( FJR, RT 1250 etc..) are way ahead in the confort department
    Once again, I know the price is lower that the other ones.....
