There are rifles and then there are custom rifles. This is the story of a pile of parts that eventually, under the skilled hands of Matt from Sawtooth Rifles, turn themselves into a incredible rifle. Rifle #301...
I met up with Matt to work on a pretty rad project, a custom bolt action rifle for my oldest son, Jatta. We started out with a Custom Gunwerks GLR Action, a 20" 1:8 twist 6mm Stainless Steel barrel blank from Criterion Barrels, a CMC Flat Faced Remington 700 Trigger, the Side Chick Chassis by Q and a Cherry Bomb to top it all off. Here is the first part of Rifle 301's story...

Fun fact: Remington 700s are extruded by the mile, and cut to length.

243 win is good cartridge. since it is custom i would have a fast twist 7:1 barrel similar to the 6mmCM and load 243 win with similar high bc bullets like the Creedmoor. best of both worlds.

Watched a video that 243 out preformed raufus rounds on ar500. So 243 is definently not a moot round regardless if its the new hotness or not

I clicked on the link expecting blah blah blah new gun blah blah blah, but after 30 seconds into the video I started getting this tingly feeling in my trigger finger and wallet.
What funny times are these, when chambering something for 243 would be considered “out on the fringe“.

@@KitBadger I had a bolt rifle many years ago that did a ragged one hole group with 95g Nosler ballistic tip handloads. Kept that as my regular load for a couple decades. I've cut back on calibers since then and the 243 was one of the last I decided to let go. I'm sticking with 3 common rifle calibers: 556, 762x39, 308. If I was hunting very large game like moose or elk, I'd probably have a 300 win mag.

  • @Johnny-jr2lq
    @Johnny-jr2lq 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Nothing wrong with 243 nothing at all just because all these new chambering’s are being released doesn’t mean that the older ones are not good enough anymore. I also totally understand and agree with the major point you made that the Ammo can be found anywhere in the United States 🇺🇸. Very cool rifle Kit Badger I am sure your Son will be extremely happy with it.

I would have purchased a pre-fit action like a Terminus or Curtis action and screwed a pre-fit barrel in there and saved a LOT of time and MONEY and when my son got older and wanted to move up to let say a .308 or if he shot the barrel out you could replace it in less than five minutes. Don't get me wrong I enjoy watching things being made, I just think pre-fit actions is the future of all rifles.

Wow and I thought I was spoiled at 13 when I got my first Remington 700 chambered in 243!
My dad and my big brother took me to the local gun store bought a Remington 700 action chambered in 243 off the rack.
The rifle had glossy wood, glossy blue finish, and a nice glossy Leupold 3X9 scope to go on top!
I happily carried that rifle for the next two years before I actually bagged my first Whitetail buck.
Around five or six years later I pass that same rifle down to my nephew who has since passed that rifle onto his son who hunts with it to this day.
I upgraded to a Steyr scout chambered in 308.
If my working class father, who worked his ass off had had time or the money to sit down and build me a custom bolt action rifle on a Q side chick Chassis I would’ve probably died of happiness on the spot!
    Very well done sir!
You are hereby crowned father of the year.
BTW that was a no gun Smith, that was a master craftsman!
I mean holy cow, is there a single part of this rifle build that this man is not intimately familiar with?
    What a shooting iron!

what a great little rifle. it will be a shooter for sure. love the 243. the only thing is with the short neck and shoulder angle they tend to eat the leade and lose accuracy fairly early. to negate that all you need to do is keep the barrel cool by shooting five or less round strings and give it a couple of minutes between them. a 243 can lose it’s accuracy at 700 rounds or 4000 rounds depending on how it’s treated.

I've watched tons of videos that go, look at this cool rifle I bought let's shoot it!
dude soooo much going on I've always wondered about and gunsmiths will take a lot of it for granted, that someone building their own gun with them will find cool. love seeing the two worlds overlap.

Pick A high velocity round and cut the barrel down??? Curious what .243 loses in a 16 inch barrel versus A 20? I don't recall you ever saying you were a handloader allowing you optimize the load to A shorter barrel?

Probably not enough to matter. :) This isn’t made for PRS.

@@KitBadger Eek out more energy to dump into whatever animal you are shooting and more range for A low mass projectile. I'm not A hunter but if I have need to shoot something I'd prefer be dead ASAP.
