- The Pipe Masters has begun and the waves are not very good. Unfortunately I finished the event in 19th over all, I needed a score of 18 to get into the top 4 but couldn’t find a wave to save my life! Anyway I’m still not much of a fan of the “New” pipe masters but thank you all for the support and watching the videos!

I hear what you're saying, maybe they should've stuck with the other format but I did think it was cool they tried scoring the entire wave. Conditions don't always pan out, that's life. On the bright side you surfed in pipe masters, how many people can say that? Sun is out, got your girl on the beach. If u ask me, This is livin 👊

I guess it depends how well one knows the break, how well the other surfers know the break, and how good they are. I was a little surprised by his comment initially because I often find the opposite - I get more waves on my own and also sometimes a lineup can drift off the peak due to currents etc (something I like to take advantage of). But pipeline is a whole other level. The quality of surfers out there are probably a very reliable indicator for positioning.

Not every ‘heat winner’ got Interviewed and there isn’t really a concept of a heat winner in this format. It makes no sense. Nick Von Rupp also ‘won his heat’ earlier that day and didn’t get interviewed. The interviews were around 5-10 minutes into the next heat. The event got put on hold after your ‘winning heat’ , so that’s probably why you didn’t get interviewed. Last I checked Stack won the pipe masters by barrels and not airs, so i guess all of your concerns didn’t come true.
I look for you or any of the boys for wave of the winter. I’m not a Hawaiian but if you or Nate, Eli, billy, or even John get wave of the winter, it’s a win! Not to mention the shootout! Hope your brother shows!!! Miss that guy!

Hi Koa. You said you didn't like the new format, that they stole the idea from your family etc etc. But I don't understand why then your brother commented on the entire competition and kept thanking vans for the amazing opportunity to host this competition? Like your father who at one point was also interviewed and didn't question the competition at all? I would like to understand even if you may have a different point of view from them, I saw a lot of post on the network where surfers seemed grateful to vans and the competition.
They were also giving props to the backdoor shootout on the broadcast for the format of the event so I don’t think those criticisms were really valid. Regarding airs being scored a certain way that’s weird for pipe but didn’t really happen anyway. I thought the event was a really fun watch and there were some epic rides. Carissa Moore’s wave at backdoor was awesome.
Yeah none of what he was whining about came true and the contest was awesome. Seems petty and dorky in hindsight everyone else was having a great time while Koa was crying and pushing his peas around in the corner

Great video, I understand how you feel about the airs... they are trying to grow surfing and think that airs all the time will help that. Koa just wants pipe to be surfed like pipe should and the pipe masters to stay true to the spot, that's all. And he's definitely entitled to that opinion. I'm no surf competition historian, but I think it's fairly obvious that the winners of most every major surfing competition always come from the ranks of those who are primarily competition surfers. Even this year's event winner, although definitely a dark horse 🐎 from New York, is an excellent competitive surfer 🏄♂️. Koa is not a competition surfer--he's a free surfer & North Shore local, very at home in extremely large & demanding conditions. Of course, anyone who enters a contest hopes to win it. However, realistically, his chances were slim to none from the outset--more especially so in lousy conditions. Anyway, I enjoyed watching this video.

Lol, the only or primary places that have problems with plastics and water in the US are Hawaii and the Pacific coastal states. Maybe the there are others, but in my travels I've seen little to none except for when visiting the coastal waters of those places.

Since subscribing, I have been catching up and watching older vids. Much respect to your shared honesty Koa. Surfing’s ancestral kings/queens never had sponsors controlling their spiritual connection to the sport. Nobody ever frowned upon Tom Curren or Brad Gerlach for opting not to compete in the competition circuit allowing them to follow their passion for true SOUL surfing and music. Continue surfing when you want, where you want and with whom you want for the pure love, ancestral homage, and enjoyment, you obviously share with your family and friends.

I sent over 12hrs for 2 days watching the heats both male and female on TH-cam. I think the format was really awesome tbh. There were some absolute epic barrels made and some heavy wipeouts. If only Pipe had of been a little more friendly it would of been an amzing contest. Some of the heats just had bad luck with the condidtions,.......but in saying that some of the best waves came from those heats that looked terrible.

I fully agreed with you about them ripping off the shootout but if the surf had been good the comp would of been great ur old man even said ok to it he spoke the truth and the bit when he says fuck yeah come out and getting stoked on the backdoor wave was pure class maybe give it a chance and be grateful for the blessings for you and the locals who getting paid from it and the lasses did awesome pushing themselves in big pipe gets my respect fully

Yo Koa next time it happen put a piece of paper towel over the hex spanner then tap it into the screw-head (make sure it is seated ad deeply as you can) often this little bit of paper is enough to create grip to get them out . If it doesn't work double the paper over and do again- old mechanic, builders trick 🙏😊

Considering the changing conditions throughout the day, certain heats will be subject to subpar waves and always be at a disadvantage. So with this new format you can be assured it will not be fair to all. Sad to see how the wsl destroyed the legacy of the pipemasters in order to maintain their control of the sport and the athletes. End of an era, but happy to have been a witness to some of the greatest moments in surfing history. Those moments will never be again until it all comes down overcoming all pressures in waves of consequence. ALOHA🤙

Despite everything, I was so happy to watch you and Billy surf on your birthday! As a spectator without ties to surfing, I know I don't understand everything that goes on out there on the water daily, let alone everything that has been built upon throughout history, but I feel that what I do know is that you guys always belong out there. tl;dr go back to the old format. We can see airs anywhere. Only Pipe is Pipe.
Koa has a fair point. Big airs have their place in competitive surfing, but that place is not Pipeline. There's a lot to be said about this whole thing, and the WSL are in danger of destroying something beautiful. Pipe is a unique wave, with a unique culture around it, and it has something that's incredibly rare: a cadre of surfers who are out-and-out Pipe specialists. People who can bring a Gerry Lopez level of style, sophistication, and beauty to their rides that comes from being on it every day it breaks. It's a mixture of aesthetics, of guts, and extreme skill.
Honestly, it's an old comparison, but the only thing it compares to is bullfighting (except purer, because only the surfer gets hurt if things go wrong. No innocent animals get harmed). Most spectators, and even a lot of judges, will never understand that style/beauty/danger thing, which is why some random WCT surfer, grabbing a rail between his knees in a toilet squat, will still get points for ducking under the lip at top speed. That's not easy, I'm not saying that. But it doesn't have the poise that a true local Pipe specialist brings to it. (Is this relevant? Is this important? No. Of course not. Compared to war in Ukraine or starving kids in Somalia, none of this is important. What surfers do on a wave will never be important, but if we're going to do it, let's do it with style!)
But here's the thing, and this is why Koa is right to be upset by it. The North Shore is INSANELY expensive to live in. And there's almost no economic opportunity there for young people. Making enough to pay rent there is a HUGE commitment. Doing so as a full-time surfer is no easy ride. And it's even harder if it's where you actually come from. It's one of those places where the locals are getting pushed out economically, and that puts serious pressure on a community, and on young people from there. So when the local surfers, who are Pipe specialists, not air surfers, get marginalised by a crappy format change to a contest that is one of their main earning opportunities in any given year...they have a right to be pissed off.
The Pipe Masters served as a way to legitimise, and support, the community of Pipe specialists. And dear lord, for anyone who truly loves surfing, and loves it for decades, that community of Pipe specialists is a beautiful thing, and worth whatever it takes to keep it healthy. We can watch kids send awesome airs all over the world. What they do is inspiring, it's cool, it's technical and entertaining...but we can see that anywhere. Even in a landlocked wave pool, FFS. But watching a well-ridden Pipe barrel, that's only possible in one place on Earth.
(Teahupoo does not compare. For one thing, it's way out to sea and only the people who got a boat out there get to see it in the flesh, and really, although it's ferocious and thick and deadly, it has a regularity to the way it breaks that makes it much less impressive than Pipe, I think. Make the drop and set the rail-that's all there is to it. I'm not saying that's easy, but it's way easier than dealing with Pipe's speed changes.)
So, for the love of god, WSL, come up with a format that celebrates Pipeline, and the crew of people who make riding it well their life's focus. Put them out in good conditions, reward them handsomely, and let the world see the breathtaking beauty of what it is that they do.
And then market the hell out of it, make it worth your while, do what you need to do. Seriously, air surfing will never compete, visually, in terms of t-shirt sales or whatever, with vert skating or halfpipe snowboarding. That's a battle you can't win. But a poised athlete standing tall in a Pipe barrel, his back hand casually dragging through the wave face, a relaxed drop to his shoulder despite all the insane, deadly chaos around him? No other activity can produce anything as iconic or inspiring. And *that* sells a lot of t-shirts or lipgloss or golf bags, or whatever other crap the 'surf' industry is marketing these days. And remember the cardinal rule of selling a niche product: ALWAYS MARKET TO YOUR CORE.
As a Hawaiian and a 1% baller at pipe...your opinion should matter and you should have the right to voice it! Love the life you are living. I'm much older that you...enjoy the youth and absorb the stoke.
Seems like the WSL is dead set on messing up surf contests. The last final was a joke… work hard all year to amass points and then someone squeezes into the top five and has a good day and wins the world championship. Carissa is the real world champion and the WSL is woke bs.
