    I know all those feels! Sometimes I like to tease Jun by giving him a quick kiss on the cheek when we're on an escalator or something. He gets super embarrassed but he still smiles. :D

      Public Displays of Affection are so important when comes to the moment that makes you feel grateful to be together you should act on it and not bottle up you emotions conservatively if the one you love says something sweet in the moment or your feeling that gratitude that they are yours in that moment then a kiss is like a reward that only couples can give each other. You know what I feel is the most adorable thing in the world more then puppies and kitties and babies and that's sweet old couples holding hands and cuddling exchanging a quick kisses cause it makes you feel... kind of envious right?

      Ophie, some languages don't have different pronouns like "her" and "him", they only use one pronoun for everybody. :) It can be a very common mistake when English isn't your native language.

    When I was in Tokyo a few years ago, I saw a high school couple totally MACKING on the train. The guy was pushing the girl up against the barrier thing next to the door, putting his leg in between hers and everything. Me and my Japanese friend were like ._. It was a sight unseen in Japan before that and I basically never saw that outside my own high school in Canada. What was funny though was my Japanese friend turned to me and said she wished she had a boyfriend who would do that.

    I don't like PDA and I'm American lol I think it just depends on what kind of PDA. My boyfriend understands how I don't like kissing and being overly lovey dovey in front of my friend because I don't want her to feel uncomfortable. If it's just the two of us in public, a quick kiss or holding hands is okay, but couples who straight out make out and are almost on top of each other in public is gross to me lol nobody wants to see that xD

    • @ninglight4433
      @ninglight4433 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Same here in central Europe. When it happens, it is akward for all people seeing it.

    • @ambermaderer9567
      @ambermaderer9567 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I so agree. I'm an American too but PDA at a certain point I can't stand. Hugging and holding hands in public, maybe not even holding hands, is what I could stand in public. Cuddling I might not mind if I see it in public but kissing and being the typical overly lovey dovey I can't stand. PDA is way overused in my high school. I see couples being all mushy lovey dovey. Not that it's bad to a certain point but it's like making out kissing and that. I personally feel that that stuff just makes people uncomfortable and maybe even jealous and there has to be that certain order. I don't want to upset people anymore that Japan feels. I understand their standards and when I do move there for my career and settle down, I will definitely tell my future partner about how I feel about PDA. You know, compromise. Very important indeed. Although maybe hiding hands wouldn't be a too bad thing, even for Japan standards but yet again, I'm not fully aware of that.

    I wouldn't be able to marry a japanese guy because I'm hispanic and we are all about hugs and kisses. Like seriously when you go to someone house it would be rude if you don't go around the house you are visiting and give everyone a hug and a kiss. Lol.

      ***** really? Cuz I don't mind, anctually I like giving hugs and kisses to family or family friends (I know it sounds weird but for me it makes me feel confortable/happy like I'm around people that I can trust, or something like that). Lol. But I can see how that could be akward.

  • @genisay

    Ugg. It drives me nuts that people in the US expect PDA between couples. I don't mind people holding hands, and hugs are always great, and quick little kisses on a cheek or forehead are okay, but I'm not keen and riding the train home and the couple behind me starts making noisy kisses. And no one should be expected to kiss or cuddle in public if they don't want to.

    • @genisay

    This was a great video! You two are just adorable. I'm married to an American, but he's kind of shy so when we were dating it took us a long time to hold hands, touch, kiss, etc. in public. Before I met him I did date a few other people in college. One of them was a guy from China. I remember the first time walking down the street and grabbing his hand when it was a very crowded day because I was afraid I was going to lose track of him in the crowd. He stopped so suddenly, it jerked me to a halt. I looked back at him, and he had this shocked goofy grin on his face. I said, "Oh I'm sorry, was I not supposed to do that?" And he just kept grinning, shook his head no, held my hand tighter, and kept walking. I found out later from other friends that casual touching wasn't a very common thing to do in China. That never occurred to me, but he seemed genuinely thrilled about it so I just kept doing it. Eventually he had to go back home to China, and we didn't keep up the relationship. I do wonder about him sometimes though, and if he remembers me fondly.

    Ryosuke just cracks me up! He's so cute and funny!
    I can sort of understand the aversion to PDA. I myself have never been a big fan of having to witness people kissing and cuddling in public. I don't know why, but it just makes me a little uncomfortable. And I also don't participate in too much PDA. I'll hug my boyfriend, hold hands with him, and sit close to him in public, but I always feel like people are staring at us if we start kissing and cuddling. And that's not the kind of attention that I want.
    But not everyone is as shy as I am, so I can understand how a negative reaction to PDA might come as a shock to them. Especially if they come from somewhere where public displays of affection are generally accepted as the norm and might even be encouraged.
    Well, this reply ended up being longer than I intended. Excellent video and really informative for anyone who didn't know about the difference between Japanese and western PDA standards! And I'm looking forward to reading your book!

    The way I feel about PDA is it's gross when it's obvious that the couple is just showing off, but if they're in their own little world, it's fine. My girlfriend and I don't censor ourselves, but we don't make out in public or anything.

      LadyNikitaShark .... Opposites attract.

    • @Xerxesjc28

      If opposites attract, then why do birds of a feather flock together?

    • @ericmcquisten
      @ericmcquisten 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Xerxesjc28 ... because they are birds... not humans. In other words, small-minded or simple-minded people need information-bias and opinion/perception-confirmation to feel good about themselves, and ergo feel comfortable around others.
      So things like hobbies, political views, & demographics can put you on a different side of someone else, and yet you can totally like and respect that person.
      The only things you really need in common, is when it comes to the things that matter, like morals, values, character, and strongly held belief systems... and your general attitude towards people and life.
      But you can be different nationalities, have different political affiliations, have different native languages, be from different classes (rich vs poor), and even have completely different hobbies. But if you both care for one another, respect one another, and value each other's differences... then those differences will make life more interesting, and enrich your relationship. :)

    • @Xerxesjc28
      @Xerxesjc28 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sorry, not sure if picked up on the joke I was making. I was making fun of the fact that idioms often contradict each other like if "opposites attract" then why do "Birds of a feather flock together? Or another example, why should "one look before you leap" if "he who hesitates is lost"?

    What about displays of affection between mothers and children? My son is severely Autistic and very sweet and affectionate with me. He is BIG now (a teenager), but he is still like a very little boy in his mind. He loves cuddles and hugs and kisses and he likes to smell me also. How would something like that go over in Japan since it's not a romantic type of PDA, but rather affection between mother and child? Thanks. Y'all are so stinking cute together. :)

    I am from America and I've never liked PDA in public. Its awkward most of the time.
    I feel even more awkward when I see it in Japan (yes I live in Japan). I was standing in line waiting for a ride at Tokyo Disney Sea with my friend. The couple in front of us was a foreign couple and they were snuggling, holding hands, kissing at times, etc. I was so afraid the people around us thought we were with them because I was a foreigner too. So I actually tapped them on the shoulder and asked them as polity as I could to stop until the ride is over. They looked shocked and asked me why. I replied because your making everyone uncomfortable.

    my boyfriend (japanese) doesnt wanna do any PDA in front of someone he knows, but the moment theyre out of sight he doesnt have any problem with it. We kiss good bye and hello, hold hands and everything, but its also something that he got used to gradually. he definitely wouldnt be doing it if his girlfriend was japanese.

      Diana Stefankova That makes sense. I think Ryosuke is the same way. And it took close to 1.5 years for Ryosuke to be ok with extended hugs in public...

    I think it's so cute that he was playing with your hair during the video :)
    My husband is Taiwanese and I think it's definitely not as common as it is in the US. He doesn't like to kiss me in public but holding hands is totally okay. However, inside our house, we kiss like 15-20 times a day (maybe more actually haha).
    When I studied abroad in Japan, I was dating a Japanese guy and while he wouldn't even hold my hand in public, when we separated on the train, he discretely blew me a kiss so my heart swooned. But that's as close as I got to any PDA in Japan, haha.
    Anyways you two are so cute! I love your videos. Thanks for sharing your experiences :)

    I found out PDA is ok at NIGHT.. pretty much anywhere as long as it's not daytime. I honestly get more embarrassed than they do about the PDA) Not just at clubs or Shinjuku either, Ueno at night is a popular date/makeout spot for old and young people alike which threw me off guard my first night in Japan.
    The guy I'm currently talking to tells me I'm too Japanese because I freak out about PDA, haha, he wants to hug and kiss in front of everyone - anytime/anywhere, even in front of parents. He's 29 so I don't think its an age thing, it's a personal choice thing.

    Wow, I think my boyfriend and your husband might be twins... My boyfriend is the practical joker and constantly teasing me too, and when he laughs his face looks like he's laughing at the funniest joke in the world. Though he tries to tickle me forgetting I'm not ticklish but he's extremely susceptible then usually keeps yelling kusuguruttai till I stop.
    As for PDA my partner adjusted very quickly to Australian style, and these days even I sometimes am embarrassed if he shows it too strongly. I was a bit worried about what it will be like when I move to Japan with him but you made my day when Ryosuke said "it's fine they think we're cute".

    I think cuddling in line is kind of gross ?? (I'm from CA)... there's something about that comes off as "showing off" or exhibitionist. duno, it just seems sleazy to me euggh. i've read that hugging in Japan is considered a romantic/sexual act the same way kissing is, as opposed to ever being just platonic, so that may be a part of the reason, too?

    • @mirandap3512
      @mirandap3512 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      SelphieFairy I think that's a very odd train of thought for an American. I figured you'd be desensitized. I guess it depends on the amount of cuddling for me. If I see a couple lying on top of each other on the ground, then that's uncomfortable. I don't sit on my partner's lap when people are around because I know some people find that uncomfortable to be around. But if a couple just has their arms around each other, then I don't think it's a big deal.

    • @SelphieFairy
      @SelphieFairy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Miranda Pring well if it's just like... arms on the shoulders (or doing that side hug thing lmao), that's ok. but if they're facing each other like they're gonna make out or doing like really long hugging, it seems kind of too much.

    • @MicheleDoenges
      @MicheleDoenges 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      SelphieFairy I love that you brought this up! It bothers me too! More often than not, though, it bothers me when it happens at the coffee shop where I work. I have to wait for people to stop cuddling/kissing in order to order their drink. It's gross and inconvenient/waste of time....couldn't they wait until they sat down to cuddle? hahaha

      A family friend once said, "People who make out in public are the ones who usually cheat." That line will always make me laugh, but also think, because he also explained that those are the types who have to act like they have to prove they're in love in generic ways and show it off.

    I'm sorry Japan but my partner and I were PDA Offenders hahaha. We didn't know at first we thought a quick hug or kiss on the cheek was ok ( only did it when we thought people weren't around ) but for the most part we did hug and hold hands everywhere we went.

    My wife who is Japanese and I'm American. We've been married a Year and been together as a couple for 10 years. Se moved here to Atlanta with me and we spend a lot of time in Japan (Tokyo) because of our business. She is very open and comfortable with PDA cuddling, holding hands, rubs on the back etc. She will even kiss me in public now. She was uncomfortable at first about kissing me hello or goodbye in public only in Japan, but she has no problem with it at all now. She loves the connection we are a very Lovey Dovey couple and she enjoys it and she doesn't care what others thinks we always say "It all begins and ends with us" Love your videos guys. Maybe Japanese men are more uncomfortable. Would be good to do a survey. Great job!!

    • @TexaninTokyo
      @TexaninTokyo  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      keithandes1 Hah, that would be a fun survey. I've heard similar things from men who are married to Japanese women - as time progressed, their wife got more "into" PDA :)
      It's really cute.

    My boyfriend and I are white and when we were in Tokyo we were careful to keep our PDA to a minimum. Although I must say we are not very active anyway.
    All my previous significant boyfriends and friend groups have been Asian American and there is no PDA there, so I got used to it. When you're in their parents' house you basically ignore one another.

    Can you do a video on cultural family acceptances of one another? Like in American families I know when u marry someone else ur family is very accepting of ur husband/wife & will refer to them as daughter/son in law. What about in Japan? Do families come together as one, once a couple marries like they do in America? I hope I make sense : x
